Foundation Types Essay
Types of Foundation
The foundation is the base for the constructed building and as such is required to carry out several
functions as follows:
0 The foundation should safely sustain and transmit to the ground the combined dead and imposed
loads of the building without resulting in any settlement or other movement of the building or any
adjoining works.
1 Foundations should be deep enough or be constructed in such a way as to avoid damage by the
swelling, shrinkage or freezing of the subsoil.
2 The foundation should be capable of resisting attack by chemicals such as soluble salts or other
deleterious materials present in the subsoil.

There are various methods of modifying the concept of strip foundations to allow its use in other
situations, for instance where some soil has a poor bearing capacity. This may be the case in wet
ground, soft clay or filled ground, where the width of the strip foundation can be extended to
spread the load over a larger area of soil. This will require the provision of reinforcement to the
foundation in order to withstand tension and spread the load over a wider area.
When a strip foundation is to be used on a sloping site the most economic solution is to use a
stepped foundation which will reduce the amount of excavation, construction under ground, backfill
and trench support. The provision of stepped foundations following the line of the ground requires
each step to be between 150 and 225millimetres in order to accommodate brick or block courses.
The lap of concrete at the step should be not less than the depth of the foundation concrete and never
less than 300millimetres whichever is the greater.

The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning,
revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved
significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found
writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties,
and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear
understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own
work. During the transition from a high school writer to a collegiate writer, my strength at

Finding an introductory paragraph that hooks the reader can be troublesome, but throughout the
course, I have spent considerable time developing that technique. The body of my arguments
each exhibit strong support for the thesis. In addition, my conclusions summarize the papers
without restating unnecessary information. Overall, my comprehension of the basic format of an
argument has proved to be a valuable asset. The weakest portion of my writing is my lack of good
proofreading. All papers require a significant amount of proofreading not only for grammatical
errors, but also for structural problems. Proofreading my own work is difficult. Many times, I
wrongly assume that the reader is able to understand my thoughts, while the various points of my
argument are actually not expressed clearly. In some instances, I fail to catch obvious errors, such
as sentence fragments or contractions, which I should be able to eliminate easily from my
writing. Proofreading my own work has consistently been the most difficult part of my writing
process, and I continue to struggle with catching all of the errors in my papers. Analyzing my
strengths and weaknesses as a writer is extremely important. Despite the fact that I understand the
structure of a good argument, I still miss obvious errors in my papers because I lack the skills
necessary to properly proofread my own work. In the future, I plan on spending a large portion of

Essay on Writing Experience
My Writing Experiences My experiences in writing have been minimal. I have only learned the
basics of writing, like putting together sentences, forming paragraphs with sentences, and things
like that. Since I have been taking college English, I can tell my writing has improved a lot. In the
future, I hope to be able to improve tremendously at writing essays, paragraphs, research papers,
documents, and stories so that I have very little to no errors with drafting and final products. I
predict I will be a well rounded writer when I graduate from college. Writing in the past started in

no errors. All through elementary my teachers taught me...show more content...

need to be able to spot and fix right away or I really need to not have any in my papers at all. My
goals are to write papers and not have to reassure myself that maybe I need to do more research or
have more data or even have to rethink my whole topic over. I would love to have the knowledge
to be a tutor someday and teach other people how to properly write papers, paragraphs, essays,
and maybe even books. To have excellent skills in writing will definitely be a great advantage in
my nursing profession. In nursing, I will have to do lots of charting on my patients. I will have to
do health presentations on various subjects such as exercising, how our society eats, and sex
education if I want to be a course instructor. Researching information on all of those topics I will
have to make sure I do an excellent job on and collect accurate information and statistics so that I
can compare to other sources. Dictating to the doctor means that I will need to write properly so
that he understands what I am saying. Other nurses will have to be able to understand what I am

The Different Types of Media Essay
The Different Types of Media
I think that all different types of media have lots of different influences on society, especially
individuals. There is an enormous variety of media including; television, newspapers, radio,
magazines, advertisements etc. It seems that the more developed that society gets, the harder it
becomes to escape media. One of the most common forms of media is advertisements.
Advertisements are not only one of the most common forms of media but also one of the most
over–exposed types of media there is. This is because advertisements appear in every single type of
other media there is, therefore making advertisements are an essential way for people to 'advertise',

From soaps, like Coronation Street, to documentaries, like a day to remember, there's something for
all ages and makes it hard for people not to get infected by this contagious disease. Some people
might argue that television is a waste of time that could be better spent or that it displaces the brain
of useful information, when in fact these people are mistaken. With televisions powerful
documentaries it encourages everyone to take an interest in something and to learn about a passion
or maybe teach them how to carry out a dream. Television actually develops and nurtures the mind.
Even soaps have a secret hidden agenda of teaching the viewer about topics some people are too
scared to talk about or confront. For example a recent storyline in Coronation Street about an
emotional violent relationship shows that just because someone doesn't show bruises doesn't mean
they aren't in a abusive relationship. Soaps also feature stories of transvestites, child abductions,
murders, child neglect etc. putting these on a television screen educates people about everyday
things that other people believe shouldn't be discussed.
Radio is another form of media, however it's less extreme. Radio generally reaches out to the
younger generation with popular radio stations, like Galaxy 102 and Key 103, they feature what is
known as popular music, dance and R'n'B. it encourages

For the proposal between my partner, Alicia Buettner, and I, we decided to find something that
related to each of our health profession majors. Our research for the proposal revealed the
importance of occupational and physical therapists working together in the field and the
changing technology in prostheses within rehabilitation treatment. With both topics in mind, we
chose to have our proposal addressing the need for occupational therapy (OT) and physical

on prostheses. After deciding on a topic for our proposal, the next step in the writing process was
following the break down for each section of the proposal that you, the professor, provided our

that Alicia and I were on the correct path for the proposal. With each

THE FOUR TYPES OF PARAGRAPHS (With Examples)
There are four types of paragraphs we write. They include: narrative, informative, descriptive, and
persuasive. All paragraphs have certain elements, but the four types are also different from one
another in how they are composed. Look at the outline about paragraphs in general.
All paragraphs:
1. It has a strong beginning, or introduction sentence, which states the main idea clearly.
2. It has several supporting sentences which make up the body, and support the main idea. All
sentences in the supporting details should back up, or point to, that main idea. The details should be
strong and vivid. The sentence structure and length should vary.

All that was left was the bathroom and my bedroom. I snuck into the bedroom, wielding the sharp
knife in terror, and bent over to look under the bed. No one was there. I silently released my
breath and turned toward the closet. I opened the closet carefully and switched on the light.
Again, no one was there. I had one place left to look: the bathroom. This was probably the hardest
place, because I had seen too many movies where someone was hiding in the shower. Nonetheless,
I crept into the tiny bathroom and flipped on the light switch. The navy blue shower curtain hung
there concealing whatever fate lay before me. I reached my hand out toward the curtain, paused a
moment, steeling myself and summoning the last of my courage, and committed myself to the
search. I grabbed the edge of the curtain and whipped it back in a flash, preparing myself to use
the knife on the fiend hiding in there. I trembled as the knife dropped out of my hand. No one
was there. Relief flooded me so strongly that I nearly crumpled to the floor. Later, after I had
called my boyfriend back, he remembered that he had gone by the apartment while I was gone and
dropped off a book I was reading. I had forgotten that he had a key. He had forgotten he'd been there
and closed the door. That was one wild homecoming!

Speech Reflection Essay
During speech class this semester, I gave several different types of speeches on several different
topics. During this semester, my ability to give speeches in front of an audience has improved quite
a bit, I hope. Going into the semester, I had a really hard time giving speeches to people, but now that
speech is almost over I feel like I am more capable of doing so. I think the thing I did best during
the semester was getting good information for each of my speeches. My favorite assignment was
most likely the impromptu speech. I really liked that one because we did not have to prepare an
outline or anything like that, we just got to go up there and speak. During this semester, I learned
a lot about how to give speeches such as the proper way to stand so I do not rock, or how to use
my hands to emphasize my points. In the future, I think that I will be able to control my speed better
during my speeches which will help the people I am presenting to understand my message. I
think the skills I have acquired during speech will help me for the rest of my life. No matter what
career I choose, I am sure that at some point I will have to present to someone about something.
The skills I learned in speech will also help me just communicate with people in a one on one
situation easier than I do now. I can use these skills throughout the rest of high school and through
my six years of college still to come because whenever I have to present a project I will know how to
effectively communicate my message to my audience.
Based off of all of my reflection sheets, video evaluations, and peer critiques I have improved over
the course of the semester. At the beginning of the semester I had a problem with speed and using
to many "filler" words. As the year progressed, my speed became more and more controllable and
I used less and less filler words. After my most recent speech, I'm still not quite at the level I want
to be at, but I am far better than I was at the very beginning. I think just speaking in front of people
more than I am used to doing has helped me develop better speaking skills and grow in my ability to
effectively communicate with others. Throughout the semester I learned a lot about speaking,
performing, and

Types of Intelligence Essay examples
Types of Intelligence The meaning of intelligence is a concept that varies across cultures and
ideologies. According to psychologists "intelligence is the capacity to understand the world, think
rationally, and use resources effectively when faced with challenges." (Feldman, R. S. 2010). Due to
the different types of human capabilities, there are different types of human intelligence. Some
intelligence is expressed mentally as in existential, intrapersonal, and spatial intelligences. Existential
intelligence is the capacity and inclination to consider and question philosophically. People with this
type of intelligence are very comfortable with concepts like the meaning of life, the purpose of death,
and other realities. Intrapersonal...show more content...
Musical/Rhythmic intelligence is also physical intelligence. This form of intelligence is more than
being able to keep accurate rhythm or play an instrument. People with this type of intelligence think
in musical terms, they live musically; music is a part of their being. Naturalist Intelligence: the
ability to discriminate among living things (plants, animals) and sensitivity to other features of the
natural world (clouds, rock configurations) (Gardner H. n.d.). Although, this type of intelligence was
necessary for hunting and gathering civilizations; I believe that Jacque Cousteau had this type of
intelligence. The more familiar forms of intelligence are linguistic, interpersonal, and logical
/mathematical intelligence. Linguistic intelligence is necessary for authors, attorneys, and anyone
whose bread and butter is made through language. Interpersonal intelligence is defined as the ability
to understand other people. Yet, I find that empathy, and wisdom must be included for the
psychological definition of intelligence to exist, or instead of solutions, problems can be created. I
define wisdom as not just knowing what to do, but actually doing it. Logical or mathematical
intelligence is an innate ability to interact with mathematical and scientific principles. Practical
intelligence is needed for success in careers that involve corporations, the military, and other
structured environments. Practical

The Types of Business Ownership Essay examples
The Types of Business Ownership
This report is about the advantages and disadvantages
of different types of
business ownerships.
Introduction
I am going to write about the advantages and disadvantages of different business ownerships
including:
* Sole Trader
* Partnership
* Franchise
I will include the definitions of some of the business ownerships.
Main Body
SOLE TRADER
Sole trader, as the name suggests, is where an individual is the sole owner of a business. The
business is often quite small in terms of size (as measured, for example, by sales generated, or
number of staff employed) however the number of these businesses is very large indeed....show more

However, as the expansion of the business depends on the amount of capital you are personally
able to inject, you may find as a sole trader that investing in the growth of the business very difficult,
as capital is often not easy to find.
DISADVANTAGES
* As a result of the inability to assist expansion, your competitors would have the edge over your
sole trader business; for example, businesses with greater access to investment would be able to
adapt more quickly to market demands leaving you struggling to compete.
* The pressure put upon the sole trader must not be ignored, and if you are thinking of becoming
self–employed as a sole trader you must address this issue as it could ultimately threaten the survival
of your business.
* Apart from the pressures placed on the sole trader by the larger organisations, you are also fully
liable financially, and the need for your business to examine the implications and consequences of
bankruptcy or loss of personal possessions due to the individual accepting unlimited liability must
also be considered. The larger your business becomes the great risk will be undertaking in operating
as a sole trader.
PARTNERSHPS
A partnership is a relationship existing between two or more persons who join together to carry on a
trade or business. Each partner contributes money, property, labour, or skill to the partnership and in

Different Types of Lies Essay
"To lie is to state something that one knows to be false or that one does not honestly believe to be
true with the intention that a person will take it for the truth". (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lie) In
other words, lying is a purposeful misleading statement. This statement can be made verbally,
through body language, or even implied through silence. Based on lying being well defined, some
might say that lying is always wrong unless there is a good reason for it. In that case, I would argue
that lying is not always wrong.
There are two different types of lies. The first types of lies are called true falsehoods. These types of
lies are always wrong. The only purpose for telling this type of lie is for one's self interest or...show

For example: A young girl is driving to the beach with her new boyfriend, they are alone, when
suddenly she feels very uncomfortable and unsafe being alone with this boy. She decides she
wants to go back home, yet she knows that her boyfriend is going to be upset if she tells him the
truth. So instead she decides to tell him that she remembered something she had promised her mom
she would do for her before she got home from work. She knows later on, when she is in a more
controlled environment, that she will tell this boy the truth because she knows he needs to know.
Another simpler yet common example would be misrepresentations of the truth in responding to
the question "How are you doing?" A person's answer would depend on the relationship that they
have with that person. A relationship that is not close at all would most likely bring a response
that would be short and on a positive note like, "everything is fine," even if it was not true. This
response would be given to that person because it may not be appropriate or a good idea to let them
know otherwise.
Another example would be a police officer during a sting operation. Is it correct for her to pose as
a prostitute in order to catch actual prostitutes? This would be considered a lie based on the fact that
the officer is intentionally trying to come across as something other than she really is. It would be

If the stressful situation is resolved, the stress symptoms vanish. If the stressful situation
continues, however, a third stage, exhaustion, sets in, and the body's adaptive energy runs out.
This stage can continue until some vital organs are affected, and then disease or even death can
occur. There are three types of stress, mental, physical, chemical. These different variations of
stress all cause similar effects to one's body. Each of these stresses can come from many sources.
Most of these have appeared as a primary threat in our environment. Mental stress occurs from a
shock as severe as the death of a loved one or from a simple thing like a broken alarm clock
making one late for work. Physical stress on the body can be caused by anything from not getting
adequate sleep to a severe whiplash injury from a car accident. In addition, there is a chemical
stress which may come from environmental pollution, the side affects of medications or even
consumption of overly refined food. Compounding all this is the tension cycle, in which mental
stress triggers physical stress or vice versa, leading to a downward spiral of health and happiness
and an increasingly painful series of symptoms.Mental stress and Physical Stress are linked due to
the fact that if one has mental stress it can cause physical stress. Man's response to psychological
stress differs little from sources of potential physical harm. Physical symptoms may include a

incorporating clear topic sentences and connecting my paragraphs ideas back to my thesis

be improved upon by concentrating on what exactly my thesis is stating and building my
sentences to relate and explain the thesis further. Improving on this will allow my writing ability

Research is done everyday. Research is used in the many different situations managers encounter

Applied research is "aimed at solving a currently experienced problem" (Sekaran, p10, 2003). This
research can be as simple as finding solutions to daily operational problems.
One problem managers consistently want research on is the relationship between customer
satisfaction and loyalty. The research found on the relationship of customer satisfaction and loyalty
spans over the past decade. Many researchers argue that there is no relationship between customer
satisfaction and loyalty while others find direct correlations between the two and a business's
profitability. In Roger Hadowell's study, he defines loyalty as both behavioral and attitude while
conducting his research on a banking organization. He states that behaviors including continuance,
increased relationship, and recommendations are all behaviors of loyalty to an organization
(Hadowell, 1996). His research illustrates the "relationship of profitability to customer related
outcomes that managers can influence directly" (Hadowell, 1996). His findings support the
hypothesis that customer satisfaction influences customer loyalty increasing profitability. Hadowell
addresses two difficulties that he encountered during his research. First, work with the organization
in order to develop the ideal measurement system used for the research. Secondly, focus on data
collected over a period of time with strong organizations (Hadowell, 1996).

My Experience throughout English 101
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest
potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic
requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my
professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for
some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me

Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense.
Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember
having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was
looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading
critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;"
(Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand
what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by
my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to
convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays.
Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish
writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to
write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one
type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several
other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my
style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what
matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and

Types of Friends Essay
There are a lot of important things in life. However, one of the most important things for people
to survive in this world is friendship. Without friendship, people can die of loneliness. What do
you think about your friends? Do you like your friends? There are a lot of different types of
friends. There are friends that I like and some friends with whom I do not get along. Friends with
positive characteristics such as reliable, trustworthy and faithful whom I usually get along with are
the one that tend to have more friends and the negative one whom I usually not get along with tend
to be alone. However, friends with negative characteristic can also give us some good examples of
seeing double sides of something, like, a character can be...show more content...
They can learn to get some confidence because confidence is really important in order to perform
better. Being an overconfident person is also beneficial, as we won't get nervous easily and our
performances will be better. This kind of person isn't scared to take some risks as they have trust
and confidence in themselves. This kind of person has potential to be a really successful person in
the future. I have a friend that is really confident that when he performed for a speech competition at
school, he can speak fluently without any hesitation that made him the winner of the competition.
We can learn a lot from this kind of person. I learn that correct proportion of something, even the
thing we take as something bad, before, can turn into something good. We have to be able to
measure how confident we can be while with friends and when the confidence is really needed.
Being a competitive person can be advantageous, as this kind of person wants to be the best in
everything. As they want to be the best in everything, they will work and study harder than any
other people. They will try as hard as they can to be the best. As a result, they will get good marks
on test or get an extremely good job in the future. It is beneficial for them. For Example: I know
that being a competitive person can be advantageous as I have a friend that is competitive. She is
so competitive that in every test, she will study as hard as she can. In every test, she managed to get
the best scores

Examples Of Lexical Cohesion
This paper tackles how cohesion can be effective to make the text more united. Both cohesive
devices; lexical and grammatical, have a powerful role in giving the text texture. Lexical devices are
repetition, antonyms, synonyms, and general words. On the other hand, grammatical devices are
reference, conjunction, and ellipsis. Both of them provide the text harmony and meaning.
Lexical Cohesion Lexical cohesion occurs when two words are semantically related to each other
such as, repetition, synonyms, antonyms, general words, and superordinate. Firstly, repetition occurs
when one word is mentioned more than one time throughout the text. To illustrate, the word "and" is
repeated about 22 times in the text , the word "her" is repeated around 15 times in paragraphs number
1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 13, the morpheme "mother" is repeated 5 times in paragraphs number 1, 8, and
14, the pronoun " I"...show more content...
Secondly, conjunctions link between clauses and sentences. They signal the way the writer wants
the reader to relate the sentence to what have been said or what is going to be said throughout the
text. Conjunctions have many types such as, additive, causal, adversative, and temporal. Additive
conjunctions, "also" in paragraph number 6, "or" in paragraph number 3, "and" in paragraphs number
4, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14, are used when the writer wants to add more information to his idea.
Causal conjunctions like, "in order to" in paragraph number 7, "so" in paragraph number 8, 9, and
14, and "because" in paragraph number 14, are used to tell a reason or a result. Adversative
conjunctions like, "but" in paragraph 8, and "although" in paragraph number 11, are used to confirm
opposite ideas.
Temporal conjunction like, "since" in paragraph number 9, is used to confirm

There are various methods of modifying the concept of strip foundations to allow its use in other situations, for instance where some soil has a poor bearing capacity. This may be the case in wet ground, soft clay or filled ground, where the width of the strip foundation can be extended to spread the load over a larger area of soil. This will require the provision of reinforcement to the foundation in order to withstand tension and spread the load over a wider area. When a strip foundation is to be used on a sloping site the most economic solution is to use a stepped foundation which will reduce the amount of excavation, construction under ground, backfill and trench support. The provision of stepped foundations following the line of the ground requires each step to be between 150 and 225millimetres in order to accommodate brick or block courses. The lap of concrete at the step should be not less than the depth of the foundation concrete and never less than 300millimetres whichever is the greater. Deep Strip or Trench Fill Foundation

Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work. Finding an introductory paragraph that hooks the reader can be troublesome, but throughout the course, I have spent considerable time developing that technique. The body of my arguments each exhibit strong support for the thesis. In addition, my conclusions summarize the papers without restating unnecessary information. Overall, my comprehension of the basic format of an argument has proved to be a valuable asset. The weakest portion of my writing is my lack of good proofreading. All papers require a significant amount of proofreading not only for grammatical errors, but also for structural problems. Proofreading my own work is difficult. Many times, I wrongly assume that the reader is able to understand my thoughts, while the various points of my argument are actually not expressed clearly. In some instances, I fail to catch obvious errors, such as sentence fragments or contractions, which I should be able to eliminate easily from my writing. Proofreading my own work has consistently been the most difficult part of my writing process, and I continue to struggle with catching all of the errors in my papers. Analyzing my strengths and weaknesses as a writer is extremely important. Despite the fact that I understand the structure of a good argument, I still miss obvious errors in my papers because I lack the skills necessary to properly proofread my own work. I have only learned the basics of writing, like putting together sentences, forming paragraphs with sentences, and things like that. Since I have been taking college English, I can tell my writing has improved a lot. In the future, I hope to be able to improve tremendously at writing essays, paragraphs, research papers, documents, and stories so that I have very little to no errors with drafting and final products. My goals are to write papers and not have to reassure myself that maybe I need to do more research or have more data or even have to rethink my whole topic over. I would love to have the knowledge to be a tutor someday and teach other people how to properly write papers, paragraphs, essays, and maybe even books. There is an enormous variety of media including; television, newspapers, radio, magazines, advertisements etc. It seems that the more developed that society gets, the harder it becomes to escape media. One of the most common forms of media is advertisements. Advertisements are not only one of the most common forms of media but also one of the most over–exposed types of media there is. With televisions powerful documentaries it encourages everyone to take an interest in something and to learn about a passion or maybe teach them how to carry out a dream. Television actually develops and nurtures the mind. Even soaps have a secret hidden agenda of teaching the viewer about topics some people are too scared to talk about or confront. I had one place left to look: the bathroom. This was probably the hardest place, because I had seen too many movies where someone was hiding in the shower. Nonetheless, I crept into the tiny bathroom and flipped on the light switch. The navy blue shower curtain hung there concealing whatever fate lay before me. I reached my hand out toward the curtain, paused a moment, steeling myself and summoning the last of my courage, and committed myself to the search. • 10. Speech Reflection Essay During speech class this semester, I gave several different types of speeches on several different topics. During this semester, my ability to give speeches in front of an audience has improved quite a bit, I hope. Going into the semester, I had a really hard time giving speeches to people, but now that speech is almost over I feel like I am more capable of doing so. I think the thing I did best during the semester was getting good information for each of my speeches. My favorite assignment was most likely the impromptu speech. I really liked that one because we did not have to prepare an outline or anything like that, we just got to go up there and speak. During this semester, I learned a lot about how to give speeches such as the proper way to stand so I do not rock, or how to use my hands to emphasize my points. In the future, I think that I will be able to control my speed better during my speeches which will help the people I am presenting to understand my message. I think the skills I have acquired during speech will help me for the rest of my life. No matter what career I choose, I am sure that at some point I will have to present to someone about something. The skills I learned in speech will also help me just communicate with people in a one on one situation easier than I do now. I can use these skills throughout the rest of high school and through my six years of college still to come because whenever I have to present a project I will know how to effectively communicate my message to my audience. Based off of all of my reflection sheets, video evaluations, and peer critiques I have improved over the course of the semester. At the beginning of the semester I had a problem with speed and using to many "filler" words. As the year progressed, my speed became more and more controllable and I used less and less filler words. After my most recent speech, I'm still not quite at the level I want to be at, but I am far better than I was at the very beginning. I think just speaking in front of people more than I am used to doing has helped me develop better speaking skills and grow in my ability to effectively communicate with others. According to psychologists "intelligence is the capacity to understand the world, think rationally, and use resources effectively when faced with challenges." (Feldman, R. S. 2010). Due to the different types of human capabilities, there are different types of human intelligence. Some intelligence is expressed mentally as in existential, intrapersonal, and spatial intelligences. Existential intelligence is the capacity and inclination to consider and question philosophically. People with this type of intelligence are very comfortable with concepts like the meaning of life, the purpose of death, and other realities. Intrapersonal...show more content... Musical/Rhythmic intelligence is also physical intelligence. This form of intelligence is more than being able to keep accurate rhythm or play an instrument. People with this type of intelligence think in musical terms, they live musically; music is a part of their being. Naturalist Intelligence: the ability to discriminate among living things (plants, animals) and sensitivity to other features of the natural world (clouds, rock configurations) (Gardner H. n.d.). Although, this type of intelligence was necessary for hunting and gathering civilizations; I believe that Jacque Cousteau had this type of intelligence. The more familiar forms of intelligence are linguistic, interpersonal, and logical /mathematical intelligence. Linguistic intelligence is necessary for authors, attorneys, and anyone whose bread and butter is made through language. Interpersonal intelligence is defined as the ability to understand other people. Yet, I find that empathy, and wisdom must be included for the psychological definition of intelligence to exist, or instead of solutions, problems can be created. I define wisdom as not just knowing what to do, but actually doing it. Logical or mathematical intelligence is an innate ability to interact with mathematical and scientific principles. Practical intelligence is needed for success in careers that involve corporations, the military, and other structured environments. Practical Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 14. Different Types of Lies Essay "To lie is to state something that one knows to be false or that one does not honestly believe to be true with the intention that a person will take it for the truth". (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lie) In other words, lying is a purposeful misleading statement. This statement can be made verbally, through body language, or even implied through silence. Based on lying being well defined, some might say that lying is always wrong unless there is a good reason for it. In that case, I would argue that lying is not always wrong. There are two different types of lies. The first types of lies are called true falsehoods. These types of lies are always wrong. The only purpose for telling this type of lie is for one's self interest or...show more content... She decides she wants to go back home, yet she knows that her boyfriend is going to be upset if she tells him the truth. So instead she decides to tell him that she remembered something she had promised her mom she would do for her before she got home from work. She knows later on, when she is in a more controlled environment, that she will tell this boy the truth because she knows he needs to know. Another simpler yet common example would be misrepresentations of the truth in responding to the question "How are you doing?" A person's answer would depend on the relationship that they have with that person. A relationship that is not close at all would most likely bring a response that would be short and on a positive note like, "everything is fine," even if it was not true. This response would be given to that person because it may not be appropriate or a good idea to let them know otherwise. Another example would be a police officer during a sting operation. Is it correct for her to pose as a prostitute in order to catch actual prostitutes? This would be considered a lie based on the fact that the officer is intentionally trying to come across as something other than she really is. It would be Get more content on HelpWriting.net

If the stressful situation continues, however, a third stage, exhaustion, sets in, and the body's adaptive energy runs out. This stage can continue until some vital organs are affected, and then disease or even death can occur. There are three types of stress, mental, physical, chemical. These different variations of stress all cause similar effects to one's body. Each of these stresses can come from many sources. Most of these have appeared as a primary threat in our environment. Mental stress occurs from a shock as severe as the death of a loved one or from a simple thing like a broken alarm clock making one late for work. Physical stress on the body can be caused by anything from not getting adequate sleep to a severe whiplash injury from a car accident. In addition, there is a chemical stress which may come from environmental pollution, the side affects of medications or even consumption of overly refined food. Compounding all this is the tension cycle, in which mental stress triggers physical stress or vice versa, leading to a downward spiral of health and happiness and an increasingly painful series of symptoms.Mental stress and Physical Stress are linked due to the fact that if one has mental stress it can cause physical stress. In writing an essay I also struggle with incorporating clear topic sentences and connecting my paragraphs ideas back to my thesis statement. This struggle is based on last years' experience with writing essays. This struggle can be improved upon by concentrating on what exactly my thesis is stating and building my sentences to relate and explain the thesis further. Improving on this will allow my writing ability to increase and help me become a more successful writer. When composing an essay, or journal entry, or just plain writing, I struggle as a writer with avoiding awkward or wordy phases in my written work. This struggle is yet again based on last year's experience and feedback from my English class. Improvement with this struggle can be made by the following strategies: reading over my paper more carefully, avoiding the use of words that sound intelligent but don't flow with the paper, and editing my paper with peers. Recognizing this struggle and following these strategies would improve my writing. Applied research is "aimed at solving a currently experienced problem" (Sekaran, p10, 2003). This research can be as simple as finding solutions to daily operational problems. One problem managers consistently want research on is the relationship between customer satisfaction and loyalty. The research found on the relationship of customer satisfaction and loyalty spans over the past decade. Many researchers argue that there is no relationship between customer satisfaction and loyalty while others find direct correlations between the two and a business's profitability. In Roger Hadowell's study, he defines loyalty as both behavioral and attitude while conducting his research on a banking organization. He states that behaviors including continuance, increased relationship, and recommendations are all behaviors of loyalty to an organization (Hadowell, 1996). His research illustrates the "relationship of profitability to customer related outcomes that managers can influence directly" (Hadowell, 1996). His findings support the hypothesis that customer satisfaction influences customer loyalty increasing profitability. Hadowell addresses two difficulties that he encountered during his research. First, work with the organization in order to develop the ideal measurement system used for the research. Secondly, focus on data collected over a period of time with strong organizations (Hadowell, 1996). In the White Page Series, researcher Burke Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense. Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;" (Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays. Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 21. Examples Of Lexical Cohesion This paper tackles how cohesion can be effective to make the text more united. Both cohesive devices; lexical and grammatical, have a powerful role in giving the text texture. Lexical devices are repetition, antonyms, synonyms, and general words. On the other hand, grammatical devices are reference, conjunction, and ellipsis. Both of them provide the text harmony and meaning. Lexical Cohesion Lexical cohesion occurs when two words are semantically related to each other such as, repetition, synonyms, antonyms, general words, and superordinate. Firstly, repetition occurs when one word is mentioned more than one time throughout the text. To illustrate, the word "and" is repeated about 22 times in the text , the word "her" is repeated around 15 times in paragraphs number 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 13, the morpheme "mother" is repeated 5 times in paragraphs number 1, 8, and 14, the pronoun " I"...show more content... Additive conjunctions, "also" in paragraph number 6, "or" in paragraph number 3, "and" in paragraphs number 4, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14, are used when the writer wants to add more information to his idea.
