2. CONVENTIONS –
FRONT COVER
My music magazine front cover is more conventional than my preliminary task as I have used more conventions on the
magazine, conventions such as a larger, more vibrant masthead which helps me appeal to my target audience easier. I
have also used other conventions, the preliminary task has made me learn the importance of conventions in appealing
to the target audience. My images used are also much more conventional as on my music magazine, they fit into the
genre more which allows them to appeal to my target audience much more easily.
3. CONVENTIONS –
CONTENTS PAGE
The conventions from my draft contents page in my preliminary task has improved greatly due to the
conventions, mainly for my music magazine I have used more conventions, conventions such as aggressive
images and an aggressive tone which will appeal to my target audience. My draft contents page has limited
conventions which wouldn’t make it very appealing to my target audience. Doing this draft contents page has
allowed me to understand how important the layout is in appealing to the target audience and what
conventions to use.
4. PHOTOGRAPHY AND
MISE-EN-SCENE – FRONT
COVER
For my preliminary task front cover my photography and mise-en-scene was average as I used a reasonably
conventional image with a sporty mise-en-scene which fit in to the cover story well. The photography and mise-en-
scene on my music magazine front cover is much better as I have taken a much better photograph which is
conventional and has an appealing mise-en-scene, I have used a band which makes it even more conventional. My
music magazine front cover photography is much more typical than my preliminary task front cover which shows
improvement.
5. IMAGE EDITING –
FRONT COVER
The image editing skills on my preliminary task are not as advanced as they are on my music magazine as I have
only cropped the image on my preliminary task front cover, this shows that my skills in image editing have improved
because on my music magazine front cover, I have managed to crop the image and edit the lighting as well as
filtering the images to make them more appealing to my target audience and more conventional. This shows
progression in my image editing skills.
6. LAYOUT – FRONT
COVER
The layout on my preliminary task is poor as it looks unprofessional and unconventional whereas my music
magazine front cover looks much more conventional as it is typical of other rock magazines which makes it
appealing to my target audience. My music magazine front cover has a much more appealing layout as I spent
more time looking into the layout of similar products and produced more drafts to help me make a much more
conventional layout.

The layout of my music magazine contents page is much more appealing than my draft contents page
in my preliminary task as I have been able to look at the layout of similar products more effective and
utilise them to appeal to my target audience. The layout on my draft contents page is very simple and
unconventional, as the layout of my contents page on my music magazine is much more appealing to
my target audience and conventional, this shows that I have improved in the layout which shows
progression.
8. FONTS – FRONT
COVER
The fonts used my preliminary task front cover are very simple and plain and not very large which
means that they are not very conventional or appealing to the target audience. The fonts used on my
front cover are much more appealing and conventional as they have styles and features which fit
into the rock genre, therefore they will appeal to my target audience much more easily. This
improvement in the use of fonts shows progression in being able to choose and place fonts
conventionally.
9. COLOURS – FRONT
COVER
The colours used on my preliminary front cover are very plain and not vibrant which makes them not very
appealing to the target audience or similar to other school magazines as other school magazines stand out
much more to the target audience. The colours on my music magazine front cover are much more
appealing and are very vibrant which makes them more conventional.
10. MODE OF ADDRESS –
FRONT COVER
The mode of address on my preliminary task front cover is very simple and plain as it does not stand out to the
audience whereas the mode of address on my music magazine is much more vibrant, aggressive and violent
which would appeal to my target audience as these features fit into the rock genre which my target audience
would like. This improvement shows progression as I have managed to use a more conventional tone in my
magazine which makes it more conventional.
11. MODE OF ADDRESS –

The mode of address on my draft contents page in my preliminary task is very plain and simple whereas
in my music magazine contents page, the mode of address is much more aggressive which is
conventional of the rock genre, therefore it will be appealing to my target audience. This improvement
shows that I have progressed positively as I have managed to make the mode of address more
conventional.
