Throughout this course of study, the concept of language as the demarcation between animals and
humans has prevailed. Further, as we have seen in our class readings, many claim that it is through
language that our "consciousness" and "cognitive" skills are developed.
Accordingly, these skills are necessary for us to interpret and conceptualize our world. What this

phenomena" (Griffin 163). Consciousness in an entity suggests "an organism which can
have intentions... the ability to form a plan, and make a decision to adopt the plan" (Griffin
164). Although these terms are defined by their human references, studies indicate that animals, and
even insects, demonstrate emotion, volition, and planning in their daily lives. For example, the
communicative dances of honeybees convey multi–level messages that suggest conscious thought

system whihc allows them to alert others in their group to potential danger.
Diamond states that they "have a natural form of symbolic communication based on grunts,
with slightly different grunts to mean "leopard," eagle," and "snake."

We've all heard it, or perhaps even said it before. "You're an animal". Whether it may be at a court
trial during a testimony, an argument with another person, or making a casual joke, that statement

noticed the low ranking monkeys' unique skills. The high–ranking monkeys soon began grabbing all

It is just a death toll for the living animals involved, and useless for the purpose animal testing is
supposedly working for. The 3R's, replacement, reduction, and refinement, are suppose to help save
the living creatures in this chaotic situation. It is suppose to slowly eliminate animal

to households across the world. Having previously owned both a cat and a dog, and currently being
without a pet, I began to think about getting a new furry friend. Born a dog lover, and bred into a cat
lover, I had the difficult decision of choosing one of the two.
When I was twenty–two years old, I answered an advertisement in the paper for free Labrador
puppies. Driving up to the house, I saw all the little critters running around and having a ball of a
time. I got into the pen with the pups, and finally decided on the shy runt who spent the majority of

I never could quite figure out Vegas' love of the window. I understood there was a lot of action
going on that he was taking in: the birds flying by and the squirrels climbing trees, but it was like
the window screen was his safety net, and everything outside of that was hot lava. If I even tried
to carry him outside the door he would instantly tense up, claw into my shoulder, and make a Carl
Lewis leap back inside. I made the horrible mistake of purchasing a cat walking apparatus in an
attempt to broaden his horizons. For the whole five minutes I had Vegas on the leash, he easily
could have been misconceived as the Tasmanian devil.
On the other hand, Charlie was born to be walked. Or in his eyes, walk me. I could hardly get to
his leash before he was tackling me to go. Charlie had a set path he enjoyed taking every night,
including strategically hitting up the same elderly couples, who would spend there evenings porch
watching, for his dinner leftover treat. For those who didn't give him a treat, well, he had a treat of
his own for them.
Charlie enjoyed getting out and around, smelling the world outside his own, and I always felt bad
about keeping him in such a small yard. Plus, with such a small yard, keeping up with the packages

Earth is the only known planet up to date which sustains life. A few millions years ago, Earth was
home to the one of the most vicious and devastating creatures well–known to mankind М¶ dinosaur.
Wrapped in a cocoon of evolution, Earth, along with most living beings, had endured metamorphosis,
transforming the world to what it is now. Gigantic deadly dinosaurs went extinct, whilst only a
minority that survived mutated into smaller–sized animals. Animals that roam the Earth are
classified into three major categories, namely mammals, reptiles and amphibians, where each
category is further divided into their respective orders (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1).

Mammals are sub–divided into two distinct groups: Prototheria and Theria (Eisenberg & Redford,
1999). Members of the subclass Prototheria lay eggs like most non–mammalian vertebrates.
However, they feed their newborn with mammary gland secretions like all other mammals. They
lack nipples, but the skin over their mammary glands exude milk for their babies. The Prototheria are
also referred to as monotremes, which literally means that they have one opening for excretion and
reproduction. This is similar to birds and reptiles. On the other hand, all other living mammalian
species, including humans, are in the subclass Theria. They have in common the fact that they give
birth to live young. Therian mammals apparently did not evolve from the Prototheria. The relatively
primitive prototherian reproductive system evidently evolved after their evolutionary line separated
from the other early mammals.
The next type of animals to be discussed is reptile. The modern reptiles representing only a small
part of those present in ancient times. Back to the history there are 16 orders of reptiles but only
four have living representatives which include three of the six described subclass (Royce E.
