3. Leaves are important part of a plant. Plant needs leaves to breathe and
make food.
Leaves grow on stems of plants.
Different plants have different types of leaves. Leaves differ in size,
shape, smell and colour. Some are big and some are small. Some leaves
may be oval, round, pointed, etc.
There are many leaves that are useful to us in different ways.
5. Leaf Blade :
All leaves have a flat surface called as Leaf Blade. The leaf blade is mostly
smooth.
Leaf Margin :
The edge of the leaf is known as Leaf Margin. Some leaves have smooth
while some do have rough edges.
Vein :
Each leaf has some lines on its blade. These lines are called as Veins. Each
leaf has one Primary Vein and many Secondary Veins.
Petiole :
The small leaf stem which is connected with plant stem is called as Petiole.
Stomata :
Tiny holes underside of the leaf are called Stomata. They help the plant to
breathe.
6. Leaves have pigment called
chlorophyll. It gives them the
green colour. It also helps leaf to
make their own food.
The green leaves takes carbon
dioxide from air. And combines
with water and sunlight to make
food for plant. This process is
called Photosynthesis.
7. Different plants have leaves of different
colours like Red, Orange, Purple and
Yellow.
Some plants like Mushrooms, Yeast and
Fungi do not have chlorophyll. So they
cannot make their own food. And they
are not green in colour.
8. When the chlorophyll in leaves finishes, leaves dry up and fall down.
It is called Shedding of Leaves.
Some trees shed all their leaves once a year, mostly during winter.
Some trees shed a few leaves throughout the year.
Leaves also dry up when they don’t get enough water and sunlight.

11. Leaves of Betel, Tulsi and Neem do have medicinal use.
Betel leaves are eaten for bad breath.
Juice of Tulsi leaves is very useful for cough.

12. Leaves of Dhak plant or Teak plant are used to make plates and bowls.
These plates or pattals and bowls or donas are disposable items.
At some places people use banana leaf to serve food.

13. Leaves of Mango or Ashoka are used for making torans to hung them at
the doors during functions.
Powder of dry mehandi leaves are used to make beautiful designs on
hands and feet.

14. Leaves of coconut and palm tree are very long. They are used to make
roofs of houses.

15. Animals like Giraffe, Deer, Goat, Sheep, Elephant, Cow and buffalo eat
leaves of the trees.

16. Leaves should be left to rot in a pit mixed with some soil and water.
After few months they will turn into manure or compost.
Compost is rich in nutrients and used to make soil fertile.
