Should Juveniles Be Tried As Adults Essay
Final Exam Essay Should juveniles be tried as adults? No , I think juveniles shouldn't be tried as
adults because it's too harsh to put them in jail on their first offense. First, the juvenile prison system
can help them turn kids' lives around. It can be a school that teaches these juveniles what the
offenses are and how they can avoid the offenses. A success rehabilitation is better for society in the
long run. When the juvenile takes this rehabilitation , he or she will change. If not , the juvenile will
need to return to the rehabilitation. Second, children that commits crimes don't understand the
consequences. If they are a first time offender, the punishment is less harsh and less juvenile prison
time. More than one offense , a bigger...show more content...
Which leads to no evidence of a crime in progress. If the juvenile's parents owns weapons, they
should lock them up and hid the key. No access to the weapons and no harm to anyone. If the
juvenile locates the key to the weapons than harm will occur to anyone the juvenile targets, then
leads to facing a judge than juvenile time. Although, the end result of a heinous crime remains the
same. Any big crimes that happens will lead the the same punishment by the law requires suspect
to spend time in jail. Our justice system depends upon holding perpetrator responsible for their
actions. The law will require the suspect to court if they commit any crime. Can you hold a 6 year
old accountable for an accidental shooting? It's possible but the parent will hold accountable for the
kid and the gun that was used in the shooting. The parents can punish for the kid for shooting but
not a big punishment since he didn't know what the weapon was. We all know kids under 8 likes to
fidget and mess around with any object around them. This is better than having the kid face court
charges for the accidental

Have you ever thought about how severe juvenile crimes are and how they should be tried? Some
juveniles commit crimes that are so bad that they could be tried as an adult. But, should they be
tried as an adult depending on how bad the crime is? Many people say that adult prison is too
violent for juveniles. Adult prison is filled with violence and many other bad things that juveniles
should not be around. According to SPLC (southern poverty law center) juveniles face a lot of
danger in adult prison. Many people also argue that juveniles brains aren't fully developed. Studies
have shown that juvenile brains aren't fully developed until they are 21. Opponents argue some
juveniles aren't taught right from wrong at a young age and grow up to make

Should Juvenile Be Tried As An Adult? Essay
A Juvenile Delinquent Heinous crimes are committed every day in the United States. Each year
thousands of juveniles under the age of 18 are arrested. The debate of "should a juvenile be tried
as an adult" is one of the ages. Many would like to argue against the idea as they believe firmly in
rehabilitation. But what happens when the crimes are so violent the family is unable to
recognize the victim, or when the juvenile shows no remorse and then goes on to harm others. At
what age should one be held accountable for their actions? At what age is a person taught right
from wrong? A juvenile is someone in many states age 18 and under, but here in the state of Texas
a juvenile is consider 17 & under. The people who agree that juveniles should be sentenced or
tried as adults are the families of the victims, and the majority who acknowledge an adolescent
should know right from wrong. Juveniles who commit violent crimes should be tried as adults as
they are old enough to know the difference between right and wrong. In the early 18th century, all
criminals young and old suffered the same fate. Partly because "...few other options existed, youth
of all ages and genders were often indiscriminately confined with hardened adult criminals and the
mentally ill in large overcrowded and decrepit penal institutions;" (CITE SOURCE) social
reformers required this to change. Thus, The New York House of Refuge was developed by
Thomas Eddy and John Griscom in 1825. This was the first

The Effects of Trying a Juvenile as an Adult By: Fatima Hawter When a person is charged with a
crime, many people don't think that the age of said person is important because in their minds a
criminal should be charged according to the law and not according to his or age. I believe that
juveniles should not be tried as adults because trying them as adults affects them in ways that it does
more harm than good for them and their community. The first effect of juveniles being tried as
adults is that it "alters the legal process by which a...show more content...
The reason for this policy is that adults are considered "unlikely to change" (Steinberg, 605). Unlike
adults, however, children and young people are more easily influenced and flexible and are very
prone to change. For example, my twelve–year–old sister was not doing very well in school and did
not even care. So our parents sat her down and told her that if she did well in school the next year,
they would give her a new iPod, and that if she didn't get good grades, they would take away the
iPod she currently had. At the end of that school year, she came home with her final report card
that had mostly A's and a couple of B's. If a child can change her behavior towards school for
something as small and insignificant as an iPod, surely many young people can change their
behavior with Hawter pg.3 the help of rehabilitative and educational programs that help keep them
out of trouble with the law. In conclusion, juveniles tried as adults is unjust. Juveniles should not be
tried as adults for several reasons –– because considering young people as adults alters the legal
process, because there is a difference of legal standards in adult and juvenile courts, because the
brains of young people are not fully mature until their mid and late twenties, and because adult courts
do not offer rehabilitative programs

Should Juveniles be tried as Adults? Violent crimes are committed in the United States every day. A
"juvenile is a person who has not attained his eighteenth birthday" (United States. Justice Dept, N

enough to do the crime they should pay for their time of the crime. It is not like they do not know
what they are doing. Teens are smarter than people think to commit the crime.
In today's world, crime has become a major factor in our society. The first reason that juveniles
should be tried as adults is that violent crimes are committed by juveniles in the United States every
day. The author states that "Seventeen percent of all serious violent crimes in 1991 were committed

Juveniles should be tried as adults no matter the crime. Should juveniles be tried as adults is a
question asked by most people, Being a juvenile is referring to someone who is young. Juveniles
should be tried as adults because they want to act like they know everything, juveniles should be
able to know what is right and what is wrong, juveniles should be able to make wise decisions and
juveniles should not be tried as adults because they have a whole child hood ahead of them.
Every juvenile who commits a severe crime should be tried as an adult. Juveniles should understand
the differences in between both good and bad. Most kids that are 15 and older are the ones
committing the worse crimes, by that age they should understand the differences in between both
good and bad. Every person in the world should be able to think before they do, being able to think

The question to whether or not a juvenile should be tried as an adult for committing a crime is still
quite complex. There are those that believe a crime is a crime and no matter who the person may be
they shouldn't be punished the same way as everyone else. Though other oppose that they shouldn't

statistics of juveniles sentenced to prison will be demonstrated, cases of individuals whose gone

Adult prisons are too extreme to have a child of 13 years of age contained in. Also be sentenced
for life in prison can destroy a young adult's mentality that is still going under development.
Juveniles that commit crimes should be sent to facilities where there are other of the same age so
it wouldn't be so extreme on them. A way of also handling not having juveniles serve their entire
life in prison is putting them in special programs to why they did that in the first place. In that
program they can find answers to their rehabilitation so they can clear their confusion and start
over with their life. It also not is always the child's fault because sometimes they can be diagnosed
with illness they have or a disorder. It can cause them to act rash and make them have the sensation
to kill and destroy. The question to whether or not a juvenile should be tried as an adult for

Adults? There are many controversies that surround juveniles being rehabilitated rather than going
through the adult justice system, but studies show that juveniles are not fully developed to be tried
as an adult. One of the main questions that it always boils down to is "should juveniles be tried as
adults?" in my opinion juveniles should not be tried as adults because of their age. First, I believe
that juveniles should not be tried as adults because their mentalities are not fully developed. Children
are often unable to consider the long term consequences of their actions, have difficulty taking the
perspective of others, and typically have...show more content...
If we simply send juveniles through the adult justice system it might make them worse
individuals. For instance, since their minds are still growing, by being around worse criminals
they may pick on their criminal traits. Some juveniles that went through traumatic experiences
which led to their sentencing will be able to get to the roots of their issues, since the counselors
will be there to guide them. Finally, I believe that by being rehabilitated the juvenile will have a
better chance at life because eventually they will be back in society. Juveniles that go through
the rehabilitation process will be able to have a clean record after they reach 18, where as the
exact opposite if they went through the adult justice system. When they get out, they will have
adult criminal records that aren't erased. (The New York Times p.28) Once the rehabilitated
juveniles are released, they will be able to start a new life. Juveniles will be able to get a job and
maybe earn a degree for a specific profession without being viewed a criminal. Since the juvenile
will have gone through rehabilitation they will have a different perception on life, and will also
understand that for every action there is a reaction. They will make smarter choices and hopefully
not want to return to the lifestyle In conclusion I feel that by not trying juveniles as adults it is a
better outcome for the child and society. We are also giving the juvenile a second chance at the

Court systems are left with difficult decisions. A controversial decision courts are faced with today
is whether or not juveniles are to be tried as adults. The increasing number of incarcerated children in
adult jails raises questions as to why. Adolescents sentenced to prison are more likely to be abused,
commit suicide, or reoffend, thus committing more serious offenses. The statutes requiring juveniles
to enter adult prisons are inhumane and in–just. Nevertheless, sentencing children to adult prisons
continues regularly today. When adolescents commit crimes, they should be tried as juveniles rather
than adults. It is true; crimes are still crimes, whether juveniles or adults commit them. However,
they are overlooking one key fact: the age of the offender. Adolescents are not capable of
understanding the consequence of their actions. Adolescents are going through many changes as
they are getting older and they are not focusing on the consequences of their actions. "Children and
adolescents do not, in fact, they cannot think like adults. They may commit the same...show more

Knowledge deters youth from committing offenses because youth will not want to be tried in the
adult justice system. However, this should not happen because teenagers are not equipped to handle
situations in the same methods at adults. According to the Juvenile Justice Center "The evidence
now is strong that the brain does not cease to mature until the early 20's in those relevant parts that
govern impulsivity, judgment, planning, for the future, foresight, of consequences, and other
characteristics, that make people morally culpable." Juveniles cannot process or plan a crime in the
same manner as an adult. The teenage brain is undergoing tremendous amount of growth in its
ability to reason, make decisions and delay gratification. The teenage brain cannot be held

Should Juveniles Be Tried As Adults?
The criminal justice system has been going through a trial consisting of whether juveniles should be
tried as an adult or not. According to a new analysis from the Pew Charitable Trust, the rate of
juveniles committed to prison or other, correctional facilities in the United States has decreased 53
percent in the last 12 years. Garinger stated in his article, Juveniles Don't Deserve Life Sentences,
that nearly seventy–nine adolescents nationwide have been sentenced to die in prison because, they
were sentenced to life in prison without parole. Many factors can be a leading cause to this heinous
behavior such as, underdeveloped brain, and growing up in a abusive environment. A young kid that
commits a heinous crime can change if he or she were given the opportunity go through counseling
or a rehabilitation program. Teens should not be held at the same standards as adults because, their
brains are still developing, and not yet grown out of immaturity. When juveniles go straight to prison
they do not get any chances of rehabilitation. A specific part of an adolescent brain called the
prefrontal cortex is not fully developed till mid 20's. The prefrontal cortex regulates aggression,
abstract thinking, moral judgement, and mental flexibility. Teens are most accountable for being
peer pressured, less mature and the inability to escape dangerous environments. In fact, according to
the Childhelp foundation, the United States has the worst records amongst other industrial

Kids should be subjected to the measures of punishment that our judicial system is giving to
them. Kids who show lots of enmity should be tried as adults. It is the only way to protect the
innocent children. These kids know right from wrong, but they choose to do the wrong things and
violence is wrong. As the laws have gotten stricter on discipline the kids have gotten wilder. When
we let society tell us how to discipline our children then violent children is the result. Shawn was

The system intends to protect the youths from themselves. If it cannot accomplish this, then all
hope is lost. (Juvenile Justice). Juveniles can be tried as adults for crimes ranging from kidnapping,
murder, rape, arson, robbery, torture, assault, and more. Some of the cases that are sent to adult
court are petty crimes, such as: underage drinking, possession of a controlled substance, and other
minor crimes. The question is whether they should be tried as adults. These are all adult actions, on
one hand, and may lead a person to wonder what brought a child to commit these crimes. One might
further inspect that if a child or teenager is engaged in so–called "adult" activities, what kind of
activities might a child choose to be involved in adulthood? What is the child's background? Can
you blame the child of a heroin addict for having access to drugs at a young age? Can you blame
the child of a murderer for acting out? Yes, everyone has a choice even a child. A lot of the
children in the juvenile system come from broken homes and family members who have also
been in and out of the judicial system making it an easier task to prosecute juveniles as adults. If
these behaviors are all a child has known, then basically it is what the child does. Children learn
from their surroundings. If the parent is a drug addict then it is a good chance that the child will be
a drug addict. Fourteen States have passed or amended legislation, known as "direct file laws",

Explain Why Juveniles Should Be Tried As Adults
The brain is considered undeveloped until one is in their mid–20s. At the age of 13, youths are
known to have an undeveloped sense of responsibility, and lack a great deal of maturity. Which
causes them to have little control over their environment. The two girls at age 13 accused of
attempting murder on a classmate show them to be two dangerous individuals. But, for them to plan
this to impress a fictional internet character shows their decisions are made due to their immature
psychological level of their age. Incarceration of a 13–year–old into an adult prison unravels
different factors that would affect their psychological development and maturity. These young girls
need rehabilitation rather than punishment at the age they are at. Juvenile offenders should be tried
as adults once they are rehabilitated and at the right psychological development as an adult....show

A 19–year–old girl would not have been expected to make the same dangerous decisions as the
13–year–olds mentioned in the excerpt. The 19–year–old girl would not act due to her knowledge of
the consequences. The 13–year–olds personalities are still changing, and imprisonment without
counseling into an adult facility would keep their depraved character. Young delinquents need
treatment more than anything. Where if they were imprisoned they would not receive the extensive
care that they need. According to the excerpt provided, "The juvenile justice system can still hold
young people accountable for their actions." From the age of 13 to 18, or even 21, the girls can
receive extensive treatment and supervision at the juvenile justice system. There the juvenile justice

same facility as other child delinquents. Then carry their sentence to adult court once they turn "of

Juvenile Justice
The question is simple yet so hard to answer, should juveniles be tried as adult for their violent
crimes? Statistics has shown that during the 1990s more than 107,000 children were put into
prison and only a quarter was a violent offence(Green Par 2). However, by the 2000s the rate
dropped dramatically by 41% due to many of the kids having mental illnesses and those who did not
commit a serious crime(Green par 2). Another reason was because of the amount of children in their
it would cost them 100,000 per child that got incarcerated. Teenagers should not be tried or sentenced
as adults because their state of mentality are not fully developed and they have not mature yet.
In America, many juveniles try to fight justice for themselves. Many of the times Juveniles are sent
to adult prison for a crime that is not so serious and left there with a little chance of survival due to
the adult in prison. They become preys to the adults at the prison because they are far more
stronger than the juveniles and they begin to harass and can get raped. In 2003, 17 year old was
imprisoned after he set a trash bin on fire. During his time in prison he was raped multiple times
and later hung himself in his cell(Parsell par 1). In a article, T.J Parsell said he was sent to prison as
a child for robbing a Fotomat with toy gun and on his first day in prison he was drugged, gang
raped, and became someone's property(Parsell par 3). Because of this, Juveniles in adult prisons were

Should Juveniles Be Tried As Adults Essay
In 2007, there were more than 200,000 minors/juveniles that were tried as adults (McCrea). This
represents the current problem within the juvenile justice system well. This represents the problem
because it shows how our system allows for hundreds of thousands of juveniles to be tried as adults.
This is why I believe that juveniles should not be tried as adults. For one, the juveniles are not fully
understanding of the consequences that are possible if they break the laws that they do (Redding).
Also, while they are able to be tried as an adult in our current juvenile justice system, they are not
allowed the rights that come with being an adult (McCrea). Lastly, juveniles are going through

They could argue that when a juvenile commits a crime, the victim won't be compensated for the
act if the juvenile is not put in jail. Also, according to statistics taken by the government, the
amount of crimes committed by people at the age of 12 has doubles while the amount of crimes
committed by the ages of 13 to 14 have tripled since 1965 (Collier) . They could argue that this is
a problem as crime rates have increased, yet if they cannot be tried as adults, what will stop them
in the future. However, I disagree as in some states there are already laws to prevent this. Such as
in Georgia there are the seven deadly sins law were if you commit certain crimes, you are tried as
an adults and put in adult jails for at least a minimum sentence (Estudillo). While I don't completely
agree with this as juveniles have not completely developed, it does show a clear counter to what
some people would say about juveniles being let off without getting in trouble for violent

Should Juveniles Be Tried As Adults Essays

  • 1. Should Juveniles Be Tried As Adults Essay Final Exam Essay Should juveniles be tried as adults? No , I think juveniles shouldn't be tried as adults because it's too harsh to put them in jail on their first offense. First, the juvenile prison system can help them turn kids' lives around. It can be a school that teaches these juveniles what the offenses are and how they can avoid the offenses. A success rehabilitation is better for society in the long run. When the juvenile takes this rehabilitation , he or she will change. If not , the juvenile will need to return to the rehabilitation. Second, children that commits crimes don't understand the consequences. If they are a first time offender, the punishment is less harsh and less juvenile prison time. More than one offense , a bigger...show more content... Which leads to no evidence of a crime in progress. If the juvenile's parents owns weapons, they should lock them up and hid the key. Although, the end result of a heinous crime remains the same. Any big crimes that happens will lead the the same punishment by the law requires suspect to spend time in jail. Our justice system depends upon holding perpetrator responsible for their actions. The law will require the suspect to court if they commit any crime. Can you hold a 6 year old accountable for an accidental shooting? It's possible but the parent will hold accountable for the kid and the gun that was used in the shooting. The parents can punish for the kid for shooting but not a big punishment since he didn't know what the weapon was. We all know kids under 8 likes to fidget and mess around with any object around them. This is better than having the kid face court charges for the accidental Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Some juveniles commit crimes that are so bad that they could be tried as an adult. But, should they be tried as an adult depending on how bad the crime is? Many people say that adult prison is too violent for juveniles. Adult prison is filled with violence and many other bad things that juveniles should not be around. According to SPLC (southern poverty law center) juveniles face a lot of danger in adult prison. Many people also argue that juveniles brains aren't fully developed. Studies have shown that juvenile brains aren't fully developed until they are 21. Opponents argue some juveniles aren't taught right from wrong at a young age and grow up to make Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Should Juvenile Be Tried As An Adult? Essay A Juvenile Delinquent Heinous crimes are committed every day in the United States. Each year thousands of juveniles under the age of 18 are arrested. The debate of "should a juvenile be tried as an adult" is one of the ages. Many would like to argue against the idea as they believe firmly in rehabilitation. But what happens when the crimes are so violent the family is unable to recognize the victim, or when the juvenile shows no remorse and then goes on to harm others. At what age should one be held accountable for their actions? At what age is a person taught right from wrong? A juvenile is someone in many states age 18 and under, but here in the state of Texas a juvenile is consider 17 & under. The people who agree that juveniles should be sentenced or tried as adults are the families of the victims, and the majority who acknowledge an adolescent should know right from wrong. Juveniles who commit violent crimes should be tried as adults as they are old enough to know the difference between right and wrong. In the early 18th century, all criminals young and old suffered the same fate. Partly because "...few other options existed, youth of all ages and genders were often indiscriminately confined with hardened adult criminals and the mentally ill in large overcrowded and decrepit penal institutions;" (CITE SOURCE) social reformers required this to change. Thus, The New York House of Refuge was developed by Thomas Eddy and John Griscom in 1825. This was the first Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Juveniles Tried As Adults Essay The Effects of Trying a Juvenile as an Adult By: Fatima Hawter When a person is charged with a crime, many people don't think that the age of said person is important because in their minds a criminal should be charged according to the law and not according to his or age. I believe that juveniles should not be tried as adults because trying them as adults affects them in ways that it does more harm than good for them and their community. The first effect of juveniles being tried as adults is that it "alters the legal process by which a...show more content... The reason for this policy is that adults are considered "unlikely to change" (Steinberg, 605). Unlike adults, however, children and young people are more easily influenced and flexible and are very prone to change. For example, my twelve–year–old sister was not doing very well in school and did not even care. So our parents sat her down and told her that if she did well in school the next year, they would give her a new iPod, and that if she didn't get good grades, they would take away the iPod she currently had. At the end of that school year, she came home with her final report card that had mostly A's and a couple of B's. If a child can change her behavior towards school for something as small and insignificant as an iPod, surely many young people can change their behavior with Hawter pg.3 the help of rehabilitative and educational programs that help keep them out of trouble with the law. In conclusion, juveniles tried as adults is unjust. Juveniles should not be tried as adults for several reasons –– because considering young people as adults alters the legal process, because there is a difference of legal standards in adult and juvenile courts, because the brains of young people are not fully mature until their mid and late twenties, and because adult courts do not offer rehabilitative programs Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Violent crimes are committed in the United States every day. A "juvenile is a person who has not attained his eighteenth birthday" (United States. Justice Dept, N Page). First Violent crimes are committed in the United States every day. Most crimes committed in the United States are from ages. It is not like they do not know what they are doing. Teens are smarter than people think to commit the crime. In today's world, crime has become a major factor in our society. The first reason that juveniles should be tried as adults is that violent crimes are committed by juveniles in the United States every day. • 7. Juveniles Should Be Tried As Adults Essay The question to whether or not a juvenile should be tried as an adult for committing a crime is still quite complex. There are those that believe a crime is a crime and no matter who the person may be they shouldn't be punished the same way as everyone else. Though other oppose that they shouldn't be punished so harshly because it can severely fracture their mental health. Juveniles that commit crimes should be sent to facilities where there are other of the same age so it wouldn't be so extreme on them. A way of also handling not having juveniles serve their entire life in prison is putting them in special programs to why they did that in the first place. In that program they can find answers to their rehabilitation so they can clear their confusion and start over with their life. It also not is always the child's fault because sometimes they can be diagnosed with illness they have or a disorder. It can cause them to act rash and make them have the sensation to kill and destroy. • 8. Should Juveniles Be Tried as Adults? Essay Samantha Panek Dr. Lennie Irvin English 1301–279 April 29, 2012 Should Juveniles be tried as Adults? There are many controversies that surround juveniles being rehabilitated rather than going through the adult justice system, but studies show that juveniles are not fully developed to be tried as an adult. One of the main questions that it always boils down to is "should juveniles be tried as adults?" in my opinion juveniles should not be tried as adults because of their age. First, I believe that juveniles should not be tried as adults because their mentalities are not fully developed. Children are often unable to consider the long term consequences of their actions, have difficulty taking the perspective of others, and typically have...show more content... If we simply send juveniles through the adult justice system it might make them worse individuals. For instance, since their minds are still growing, by being around worse criminals they may pick on their criminal traits. Some juveniles that went through traumatic experiences which led to their sentencing will be able to get to the roots of their issues, since the counselors will be there to guide them. Finally, I believe that by being rehabilitated the juvenile will have a better chance at life because eventually they will be back in society. Juveniles that go through the rehabilitation process will be able to have a clean record after they reach 18, where as the exact opposite if they went through the adult justice system. When they get out, they will have adult criminal records that aren't erased. (The New York Times p.28) Once the rehabilitated juveniles are released, they will be able to start a new life. Juveniles will be able to get a job and maybe earn a degree for a specific profession without being viewed a criminal. Since the juvenile will have gone through rehabilitation they will have a different perception on life, and will also understand that for every action there is a reaction. They will make smarter choices and hopefully not want to return to the lifestyle In conclusion I feel that by not trying juveniles as adults it is a better outcome for the child and society. We are also giving the juvenile a second chance at the future that everyone Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Should Juveniles Be Tried As Adults Essay Court systems are left with difficult decisions. A controversial decision courts are faced with today is whether or not juveniles are to be tried as adults. The increasing number of incarcerated children in adult jails raises questions as to why. Adolescents sentenced to prison are more likely to be abused, commit suicide, or reoffend, thus committing more serious offenses. The statutes requiring juveniles to enter adult prisons are inhumane and in–just. Nevertheless, sentencing children to adult prisons continues regularly today. When adolescents commit crimes, they should be tried as juveniles rather than adults. It is true; crimes are still crimes, whether juveniles or adults commit them. However, they are overlooking one key fact: the age of the offender. Adolescents are not capable of understanding the consequence of their actions. Adolescents are going through many changes as they are getting older and they are not focusing on the consequences of their actions. "Children and adolescents do not, in fact, they cannot think like adults. They may commit the same...show more content... Knowledge deters youth from committing offenses because youth will not want to be tried in the adult justice system. However, this should not happen because teenagers are not equipped to handle situations in the same methods at adults. • 10. Should Juveniles Be Tried As Adults? The criminal justice system has been going through a trial consisting of whether juveniles should be tried as an adult or not. According to a new analysis from the Pew Charitable Trust, the rate of juveniles committed to prison or other, correctional facilities in the United States has decreased 53 percent in the last 12 years. Garinger stated in his article, Juveniles Don't Deserve Life Sentences, that nearly seventy–nine adolescents nationwide have been sentenced to die in prison because, they were sentenced to life in prison without parole. Many factors can be a leading cause to this heinous behavior such as, underdeveloped brain, and growing up in a abusive environment. A young kid that commits a heinous crime can change if he or she were given the opportunity go through counseling or a rehabilitation program. Teens should not be held at the same standards as adults because, their brains are still developing, and not yet grown out of immaturity. When juveniles go straight to prison they do not get any chances of rehabilitation. A specific part of an adolescent brain called the prefrontal cortex is not fully developed till mid 20's. The prefrontal cortex regulates aggression, abstract thinking, moral judgement, and mental flexibility. Teens are most accountable for being peer pressured, less mature and the inability to escape dangerous environments. • 11. Juveniles Should Be Tried as Adults Essay Kids should be subjected to the measures of punishment that our judicial system is giving to them. Kids who show lots of enmity should be tried as adults. It is the only way to protect the innocent children. These kids know right from wrong, but they choose to do the wrong things and violence is wrong. As the laws have gotten stricter on discipline the kids have gotten wilder. When we let society tell us how to discipline our children then violent children is the result. Shawn was 16 in 1998 when he violently stabbed his father in his sleep, was tried as a juvenile because of his pre–existing parasomnia, and was sentenced to juvenile hall until his 19th birthday. Jose, 15 in 1998, engaged in a deadly brawl with four other teenagers,...show more content... The system intends to protect the youths from themselves. If it cannot accomplish this, then all hope is lost. (Juvenile Justice). Juveniles can be tried as adults for crimes ranging from kidnapping, murder, rape, arson, robbery, torture, assault, and more. Some of the cases that are sent to adult court are petty crimes, such as: underage drinking, possession of a controlled substance, and other minor crimes. The question is whether they should be tried as adults. These are all adult actions, on one hand, and may lead a person to wonder what brought a child to commit these crimes. One might further inspect that if a child or teenager is engaged in so–called "adult" activities, what kind of activities might a child choose to be involved in adulthood? What is the child's background? Can you blame the child of a heroin addict for having access to drugs at a young age? Can you blame the child of a murderer for acting out? Yes, everyone has a choice even a child. A lot of the children in the juvenile system come from broken homes and family members who have also been in and out of the judicial system making it an easier task to prosecute juveniles as adults. If these behaviors are all a child has known, then basically it is what the child does. Children learn from their surroundings. If the parent is a drug addict then it is a good chance that the child will be a drug addict. • 12. Explain Why Juveniles Should Be Tried As Adults The brain is considered undeveloped until one is in their mid–20s. At the age of 13, youths are known to have an undeveloped sense of responsibility, and lack a great deal of maturity. Which causes them to have little control over their environment. The two girls at age 13 accused of attempting murder on a classmate show them to be two dangerous individuals. But, for them to plan this to impress a fictional internet character shows their decisions are made due to their immature psychological level of their age. Incarceration of a 13–year–old into an adult prison unravels different factors that would affect their psychological development and maturity. These young girls need rehabilitation rather than punishment at the age they are at. Juvenile offenders should be tried as adults once they are rehabilitated and at the right psychological development as an adult....show more content... A 19–year–old girl would not have been expected to make the same dangerous decisions as the 13–year–olds mentioned in the excerpt. The 19–year–old girl would not act due to her knowledge of the consequences. Where if they were imprisoned they would not receive the extensive care that they need. According to the excerpt provided, "The juvenile justice system can still hold young people accountable for their actions." From the age of 13 to 18, or even 21, the girls can receive extensive treatment and supervision at the juvenile justice system. • 13. Should Juveniles Be Tried As Adults Over the recent years, more and more criminals are being set loose because of space running low in prisons and the budget. The government targets criminals that are serving short, lenient charges. Most of these criminals are juveniles who were given a second chance to live a healthy, positive life away from violence and nonsense. What happens to the victims who find out that the person who killed their daughter or son has been given this chance? At least when the suspect was behind bars there was a sense of closure. Now, a family will not rest knowing that there is a criminal walking the streets of where there daughter or son once walked too. • 15. Should Juveniles Be Tried As Adults Juvenile Justice The question is simple yet so hard to answer, should juveniles be tried as adult for their violent crimes? Statistics has shown that during the 1990s more than 107,000 children were put into prison and only a quarter was a violent offence(Green Par 2). However, by the 2000s the rate dropped dramatically by 41% due to many of the kids having mental illnesses and those who did not commit a serious crime(Green par 2). Another reason was because of the amount of children in their it would cost them 100,000 per child that got incarcerated. Teenagers should not be tried or sentenced as adults because their state of mentality are not fully developed and they have not mature yet. In America, many juveniles try to fight justice for themselves. Many of the times Juveniles are sent to adult prison for a crime that is not so serious and left there with a little chance of survival due to the adult in prison. They become preys to the adults at the prison because they are far more stronger than the juveniles and they begin to harass and can get raped. In 2003, 17 year old was imprisoned after he set a trash bin on fire. During his time in prison he was raped multiple times and later hung himself in his cell(Parsell par 1). In a article, T.J Parsell said he was sent to prison as a child for robbing a Fotomat with toy gun and on his first day in prison he was drugged, gang raped, and became someone's property(Parsell par 3). Because of this, Juveniles in adult prisons were Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Should Juveniles Be Tried As Adults Martrez Reynolds eng. 1101 mr. Ogletree, Randy Juveniles: Should they be tried as adults? Should juveniles be tried as adults? Here is a topic that is being reflected by several people across some years. In the following of my research paper, I wish to discuss my standpoint on juveniles being tried as adults. In which in selected situations I feel that the juvenile should get punished for the crime that they committed, but it should not be to the extent of an adult's punishment. The holy bible states that "when I was a kid I thought and acted like a kid, but when I became an adult I put away childish things. weegy.com states that:"Under most state laws, juvenile offenders do not commit "crimes." They commit delinquent acts. Some of...show more content... I fill that for no reason should a young have to with do such punishment that saved. They are juveniles, not adults so why try them as if they are. Reason number four, a conviction in adult criminal court carries more social stigma than a juvenile court decision makes adult criminal records are harder to seal than juvenile court records –– sealing," Many people argue that if a juvenile can commit an adult crime that they should face an adult system and serve adult time. But I on those other hands don't think so, I feel that the adult system is no place for anyone under 17 because most of the minds are not that mature and might become easily influenced. Not saying that they shouldn't get punished to the extent of the crime they've committed, they should, however not to the magnitude of the adult system. As you can see from the research, there are many approaches to this particular situation, whether it's good or wrong; I feel that we need to come up with a desirable solution Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Should Juveniles Be Tried as Adults? Kids seem to be growing up earlier as the years go by. Serious crimes committed by juveniles have stayed pretty much the same in the last twenty years, but that is not to say people have not concluded differently. A thanks to laws passed in the ninety's and more specifically between ninety two and ninety seven, It is easier to try juveniles as adults in the court system. There are multiple pros and cons to juveniles being tried as adult. These arguments range from a crime is a crime to they are not mentally developed enough to understand completely. These are just a couple of the things to consider when asking if a juvenile should be tried as an adult. Every person in life has their own opinion and juvenile crimes are not an exemption to that. Those that are against in make their case known. Statistics show a child between the age of 9 to 10 cannot fully understand the consequences of committing a crime and are therefore cannot be tried as an adult who is fully developed as a person. Children process information differently than adults. For example, when an adult sees a piece of candy on the ground they try not to step on it, but when a kid sees candy on the ground their first thought is "oh candy'. Infections, germs, diseases, and viruses are all possible from that candy, but a child does not take the consequences into the equation. They want what they want. The question of should juveniles be tried as adults says they against it because they can not see long term. The Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Juveniles Should Be Tried As Adults Essay Omar Pena Mrs.Kelly Expository 12 May 2018 Juvenile Justice We live in a society today, juvenile justice is a concern for law enforcement. One thing is for sure and that whether or not to try teens should be tried as an adult and be given adult sentence. In all of the states there are juvenile justice systems where teens are tried and put into juvenile jail . The main focus of these jails are to help them thru rehab t and make them better it just not a punishment . The thing is there so many teens out there being tried as an adult.. Although some people want the death sentence for teens there still doesn't exists only teens get life sentence instead but these juveniles do not deserve to be treated this way they should be treated better; they deserve a chance for a better life, a chance to change, and they are not going to have this chance in prison. Juveniles should not be tried as adults. There so many people that believe that teens should be tried as an adult and...show more content... A surprisingly large majority of young offenders outgrow crime. According to Gail Garinger, a Massachusetts juvenile court judge, "it is impossible at the time of sentencing for mental health professionals to predict which youngsters will fall within that majority and grow up to be productive, law–abiding citizens and which fall into the small minority that continue to commit crimes" (94). Everyone is bound to make poor decisions in their lives. More than the other there are just good people making bad choices. Children should be given the opportunity to demonstrate that they can mature and rehabilitate. They deserve a chance to prove that they can become different people. The best time to decide if someone is deserving of spending most to all of their life in prison is not when they are a child. If placed in juvenile correction systems, teens can be given the support and needed help to change their ways and prove that they will not always be the immature criminal they once Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Juveniles Should Be Tried As Adults Essay Crimes are committed in the world everyday. Half of the crimes being comitted are by teenages between the ages 13–17. How can they be tried as adults adults when they are incapable of thinking like one? If you take away their chance of a fresh start then it wouldn't be fair and unconstitutional. Juveniles are not allowed to drink, drive without restrictions, get married or even sign a legal contract without their signature being invalid. They are physically incapable of making mature, well–processed decisions. The brain is not fully developed until at least the age of 20. Teenagers can not possibly be expected to handle the same consequences as fully matured adults. Research has shown that the rate at which juvenile violators of the law turn...show more content... The adultification of youth (or waiver to adult court) is unduly harsh for youth whose brains have not fully formed." – Dr. Allison Burke In view of people who are not against juveniles being tried as adults, if a person is aware of what they're doing and has control of what they're doing then they should be punished. If a minor has the guts to make the same mistake as an adult and break the law then they should have the responsibility to face what they did. Juveniles should be tried as adults, based on the crime that is committed. If the crime is severe as murder or rape, then yes, an adult charge should be served. They should be charged as juveniles and seek for help. Children as young as 11 are being sent to adult prisons 96% of them live in an abusive home, are being abused or live in a violent neighborhood. These young offenders know right from wrong but they are unable to process the long term effects of their decisions. Most teens live in the now and aren't thinking of tomorrow or 5 years from now. The people should be helping these kids not locking them up. That child would have to deal with being sexual harassment every day because of his or hers size or age. They shouldn't spend their whole life getting raped in a prison Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Should Juveniles Be Tried As Adults Essay In 2007, there were more than 200,000 minors/juveniles that were tried as adults (McCrea). This represents the current problem within the juvenile justice system well. This represents the problem because it shows how our system allows for hundreds of thousands of juveniles to be tried as adults. This is why I believe that juveniles should not be tried as adults. For one, the juveniles are not fully understanding of the consequences that are possible if they break the laws that they do (Redding). Also, while they are able to be tried as an adult in our current juvenile justice system, they are not allowed the rights that come with being an adult (McCrea). Lastly, juveniles are going through changes and putting them in jail can greatly affect them (Ortiz) The first reason they shouldn't be tried in court is because they do not fully understand the consequences of their actions before they commit the crime. Studies...show more content... They could argue that when a juvenile commits a crime, the victim won't be compensated for the act if the juvenile is not put in jail. Also, according to statistics taken by the government, the amount of crimes committed by people at the age of 12 has doubles while the amount of crimes committed by the ages of 13 to 14 have tripled since 1965 (Collier) . They could argue that this is a problem as crime rates have increased, yet if they cannot be tried as adults, what will stop them in the future. However, I disagree as in some states there are already laws to prevent this. Such as in Georgia there are the seven deadly sins law were if you commit certain crimes, you are tried as an adults and put in adult jails for at least a minimum sentence (Estudillo). While I don't completely agree with this as juveniles have not completely developed, it does show a clear counter to what some people would say about juveniles being let off without getting in trouble for violent Get more content on HelpWriting.net
