This document discusses academic standing policies for the Bachelor of Multidisciplinary Studies program. It defines the different categories of academic standing as good standing, probation, and suspension based on a student's cumulative GPA. Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA to graduate and to remain in good standing. Those who fall below 2.0 will be placed on probation and have restrictions on course enrollment. Failing to meet probation conditions can result in academic suspension. The document also describes an Option 2 program that resets a student's GPA after time away from school.
2. Understanding GPA
A student’s GPA is calculated in two ways:
The semester GPA
The cumulative GPA
The cumulative GPA is used to determine the
academic standing.
Maintaining a good GPA is important. All students
must have an overall 2.0 GPA to graduate as well
as a 2.0 GPA in each BMS concentration.
3. Standings
Based on the cumulative GPA, students can be in
one of three categories:
1.Good academic standing
2.Academic Probation
3.Academic Suspension
4. Good Academic Standing
Students with a 2.0 cumulative GPA or above are
in good academic standing.
Students must be advised every semester, but
there are no other restrictions.
5. Academic Probation
If student’s cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0, the
student will be placed on academic probation.
The student must seek permission from an Associate
Dean in the College of Liberal Arts to re-enroll.
• If permitted to re-enroll, the student may register for up to 12 hours
in the upcoming semester. However, the student may be advised
or choose to enroll for fewer hours.
The student must also be advised by a BMS Program
Advisor prior to registration.
6. Academic Probation
While on probation, the student must:
Register only for classes on the degree plan
Pass all classes with a C or better (no D, F, W, or I)
Students who meet the conditions, but do not raise their
cumulative GPA to a 2.0, will remain on academic
probation.
7. Academic Suspension
If a student has been placed on Academic
Probation and does not meet the conditions
mentioned previously, that student may be placed
on Academic Suspension.
The student will receive notice from the Liberal Arts
Dean’s Office.
The student will not be permitted to enroll in classes for
the semester, year, or up to two years.
8. Academic Suspension
A student who is put on Academic Suspension and
has sat out the required span of time is eligible for
reinstatement.
The student must meet with the Dean of Liberal Arts for
reinstatement approval.
• If reinstated, the student will remain on academic probation until the
cumulative GPA is above a 2.0.
The student must also be advised by a BMS Program
Advisor prior to registration.
9. Option 2
Option 2 is a program that offers grade forgiveness
to returning UTEP students.
It “resets” your GPA to good standing
The grades remain on your transcript, but they are not
calculated into your GPA
You lose the credits for any courses you passed.
Speak with your Academic Advisor about Option 2
if you have not attended UTEP for at least 6
consecutive semesters.
