UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF
RELIGION
When one prays, he or she actively seeks
an affinity to divine beings or
supernatural entities that are beyond the
purely natural world.
Majority of World religions follow a set of prayers in the form of:
CHANTS
 A melodic sounds
with the voice
MANTRAS
• A word or sound repeated
to aid concentration in
meditation

-SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT & UPBRINGING are critical in
the development of religious life.
ELEMENTS OF RELIGION
1.Belief System – worldview of a particular group of
people
2.Community –a religion always involves a group of
people who showed the same belief
system.
3.Rituals - religion always have enacted belief
which are made real through
ceremonies.
4.Ethics – (branch of philosophy) deals with
morality
(rightness and wrongness) of a human
act.
ELEMENTS OF RELIGION
6. Emotional Experience -devotion, mystery
and bliss
7. Material Expression -Statues, Paintings,
musical composition, ritual objects,
flowers, incense, clothing, architecture
8. Sacredness - for most religion, the core or origin of
everything is always viewed as “sacred” or mysterious.
KINDS OF BELIEF SYSTEM
1.Monism- there is no real distinction
between God and the universe
Belief: 1. God is dwelling in universe
as part of it.
2. The universe does not exist
at all as a reality but only as
a manifestation of God.
2. Polytheism- the belief and worship of many
Gods
-no one is supreme
God of Love and Beauty
3. Monotheism- belief in one God.
4. Atheism -disbelief in or denial of the
existence of
God.
5. Agnosticism -God cannot be known
“An organized system of beliefs,
ceremonies, and rules in
worship a God or a group of
Gods” (MWD)
Derived from the latin
verb religare which
means “to tie together,
to bind fast.”
