1.0 Introduction
About Online Learners

- Taking online classes with a part or full-time job can be a balancing
     act.

- Many online students struggle to meet their work deadlines while
still turning in school assignments on time.

 Studying Online

- However, students must take the means to overcome this problem.
Five topics were chosen in which it focuses on five aspects:
     a) How do you balance online classes with your job?
     b) 4 ways to balance family and school
     c) 5 ways to stay motivated
     d) Smart study strategies
     e) Reading strategies

2.0 Summary of Selected Topics

2.1 Topic 1 -How Do You Balance Online Classes with Your Job?
 According to Mark (2009) , many people who choose to enroll in
an online school over a traditional school do so because they work
full-time, and the time saved by attending classes at home allows
them to juggle work and school responsibilities. But that doesn’t
mean it’s an easy task to balance. (Mark, 2009)

 There are five ways how do you balance online classes with your
    job:
       a) Make a schedule
       b) Communicate
       c) Adjust your work
       d) Use school resources
       e) Use your classmates

 Make a schedule
   - Write down your work and class that have
fixed times. See how your days , where there are times
that you can adjust if needed for work or school
     obligations.

 Communicate

   - Your family and your boss should know about your
schedule. Your family should know when your
“study time” is. It is to avoid distractions
and make your studying as efficient as possible.

                                                     Mark (2009)

Prepared by Norzita Mat Nayan Page 5
 Adjust your work schedule if possible

  - There’s a good chance that your boss will be flexible about
letting your rearrange your schedule as needed, if you’re
working on a degree or certificate that can
help you in your current job.

 Use school resources

   - Use any school resources (tutoring, orientation, online
library, time management tips, study skills training) that
can make you feel more comfortable and
     help you save time.

                                                  Mark (2009)

 Use your classmates to help you stay motivated

  - Forming an online study group or otherwise keeping in
contact with classmates help you understand the material
better and make the class a more fun experience.

 - It will also help feel vested in the class, making you less likely to
   drop out.
                                                          Mark (2009)

2.2 Topic 2 – 4 Ways to Balance Family and School
 According to Littlefield, J.(2004), balancing school and family
life can be a challenge, even for online learners. While many older
adults choose to continue their education through the internet,
they often find their study time interrupted by spouses and
children who miss them and don't understand the need for "alone
time." Take a look at this article to learn strategies for maintaining
good relationships with those you love while studying
   online.(Littlefield, J.2004)

 There are 4 ways how to balance family and school.
    a) Set some ground rules for all parties
    b) Don’t forget play time
    c) Be an example
    d) Involve your family in your learning

                                    Play time

                                     Example

                                Involve your family

                                        Littlefield, J.(2004)

Prepared by Norzita Mat Nayan Page 9
 Ground rules
   - Let your family know when you’ll be available and when
they shouldn’t disturb you. For example, you may want to
hang a “do not disturb” sign on the door if you’re in an
     online chat meeting.

   - You’ll also need to set some ground rules for yourself. Give
your family the attention they need during your off-hours.

 Play time

   - Online courses can get intense at times, particularly if
you’re enrolled in more than one. But, don’t you forget to have
     fun.

  - You’ll get much needed relaxation and less stressful mood.

Prepared by Norzita Mat Nayan Page 10
 Be an example

 - Use your own studies to set an example for how they can
succeed in their own classes if you have school-aged children.

 - When you study along side your kids, try setting aside a study
   time each afternoon.

 - Serve a nutritious snack and play relaxing music. Chances are
they’ll mimic the study skills you model and their grades will
   benefit.

 - You’ll get a chance to complete your own studies while
spending some time with your kids. It’s a win-win.

Prepared by Norzita Mat Nayan Page 11
 Involve family

- Let your family know that you want to achieve something
 meaningful.

- If there is something interesting, talk time at the dinner table
or while driving your kids to school.

- Let your spouse tag along on field trips to the art museum or city counsel.

- Chances are they’ll enjoy being involved in this part of your life and
you’ll appreciate the chance to share it.

2.3 Topic 3 – 5 Ways to Stay Motivated

 According to Littlefield (2011)Many distance
learners agree that the most difficult part of studying
online is staying motivated. Because students must
the initiative to complete their courses completely on
their own, without the physical presence of teachers
and other peers, many students find it easy to become
distracted and discouraged in their work. ( Littlefield,
      2011)

 There are five ways how to stay motivated:
  a) Connect with your classmates
  b) Discuss what you learn
  c) Chart you progress
  e) Reward yourself
  f) Take time for fun

 Connect with your classmates

   - Establish contacts with your friends via online for you
to discuss together the problems of learning.

   - It not only saves time but it is more convenient and
     useful.

 Discuss what you learn

   - Find a friend or relative who has similar interests or
who would enjoy hearing about your studies.

   - You’ll understand the material better and will be
motivated to stay on task in order to keep up with the
     conversation.

Prepared by Norzita Mat Nayan Page 15
 Chart your progress
   - Design your own map of completed classes and post it
     somewhere that is visible daily.

   - There’s a certain satisfaction that comes with watching your
     goals be accomplished.

 Reward yourself

   - Reward yourself for doing well in your coursework.

   - Whether it be a new dress, or even a new car, setting up a
reward system just may be the extra push you need to succeed.

Prepared by Norzita Mat Nayan Page 16
 Take time for fun

  - You’ll likely suffer in all areas if you’re spending all your
time working, studying, and watching after the kids.

  - Set aside a little time every week for a favorite activity.
You’ll be more productive when you return to your work.

2.4 Topic 4 – Smart Study Strategies
 About smart study
