This document provides a guide for introducing oneself in French. It discusses presenting one's name, age, city of residence, nationality, religion, profession, hobbies, and provides an example self-introduction combining all these elements. It also notes some key differences between French and English conventions, such as stating one's age as "I have 28 years" rather than "I am 28 years old" in French. The document is authored by Ganiat Sodeke of Frenchy Associates, Nigeria and provides contact information to learn more about French language lessons.

3. MOI-MEME | MYSELF
Moi-même means Myself in English Language;
It is very important to know how to introduce oneself not only in English
but also in French because:
One may wish to get to know a non-English speaking acquaintance
better,
One may also have the need to present oneself in a professional
context to non-English speakers.
The pattern of introducing and/or presenting oneself in French is same as
in English Language but they are only orthographically different.
Example: I am 28 years old (English)
I have 28 years old | J’ai vingt-huit ans (French)

5. Also, unlike in English Language where nouns are not gender
sensitive especially when talking about profession, French nouns are
gender sensitive and this also applies to the issue of professions.
Example: She is a Lawyer (English)
Elle est avocate (French)
N:B Also note that articles are omitted when talking about
profession in French unlike in English Language

Below are the steps to follow which would serve as a guide when introducing
oneself in French:
Self Introduction
The most common way to start a presentation on oneself in French is
stating ones name
Example: Je m’appelle Ganiat Sodeke|My name is Ganiat Sodeke
Age
Unlike in English where “ I am 28 Years Old” is the pattern, the French
say “I have 28years old” which can be translated as J’ai 28 ans
City Of Residence
This can be broken down into the area and/or street of residence.
Example: J’habite à Surulere, Lagos | I live at Surulere, Lagos
7. MOI-MEME | MYSELF (Cont’d)
Nationality
As stated earlier on, French nouns are gender sensitive (Masculine and Feminine) and
in this case, one has to be very careful both verbally and orthographically so as not to
mix-up the genders.
Example: Oludele est Nigérian (Masuline)| Oludele is a Nigerian
Ganiat est Nigériane (Feminine) | Ganiat is a Nigerian
N:B I am a Nigerian would now be translated as
“Je suis Nigérian / Nigériane” depending on the gender.
Religion
Je suis Chrétien (Masculine) / Chrétienne (Feminine) | I am a Christian
Je suis Musulman (Masculine) / Musulumane (Feminine) | I am a Muslim
Profession
You have to state your profession here but pay attention to the gender rule
Je suis avocat | I am a lawyer
Je suis avocate | I am a lawyer
