There are 6 Tips for Effective Networking
Know why you are there

Know What you are Going to Talk ABout
Build Relationships. Avoid selling
Use Teasers and Trailers to talk about your Movie
7. Before you go to the event think of questions that people might ask you about your company so that you have all your answers ready in advance:
When you are at a networking event people are bound to ask you about your career and your company. Think of some of the questions you'll be asked in advance and come up with answers. I've gotten used to being able to explain the mission and goals of The Levo League as well as what I do there in two to three sentences. You don't want to bore people with the details -- so learn to get to the point!
Use Teasers and Trailers to talk about your Movie
6. Have questions to ask in advance if you run out of things to talk about:
If you start running out of things to talk about defer to a few questions you have thought of in advance. Make sure that these questions can't just be answered with a simple "Yes," or "No!" People enjoy talking about themselves. Asking questions shows that you are interested in finding out more about them. If you can muster up actual interest in them, all the better -- you might be surprised by the amazing people you'll meet once you open up to the possibility that the person in front of you is totally fascinating.

Smile:
t's a simple – but often overlooked – rule of engagement. By smiling, you'll put your nervous self at ease, and you'll also come across as warm and inviting to others. Remember to smile before you enter the room, or before you start your next conversation.
Ask Easy and Inclusive Questions
Don't wait around the edges of the room, waiting for someone to approach you. To get the conversation started, simply walk up to a person or a group, and say, "May I join you" or "What brings you to this event?" Don't forget to listen intently to their replies. If you're not a natural extrovert, you're probably a very good listener – and listening can be an excellent way to get to know a person.
Remember Names:
It is uncomfortable when you turn to introduce someone and you can't remember their name! I learned to say, "It's nice to meet you ____________________." It's an instant leadership cue. Repeating the person's name helps you to remember it. Also, people love hearing their own name -- never underestimate the value of reinforcing a new friend's sense of self! Some of the greatest politicians in history are those who manage to be totally surprised and delighted by meeting an otherwise innocuous new face (e.g. Theodore Roosevelt and Bill Clinton).

it is more important to make more meaningful connections with a smaller number of people.
What is your networking goal?
Give Value to Receive Value
Networking is only the beginning
Don’t waste your time networking if you are not prepared to develop win-win relationships. Trust me when I say, I know what I’m talking about.
I am the organizer of a local business organization with a membership of over 400 self-employed women. I was shocked when I learned that most of the members attended only one or two meetings and then did not return. When I sent out a survey asking why they stopped, the majority replied that it was because they had not gotten any business.
Hadn’t gotten any business! Were they kidding me? They expected people to buy what they are offering after only a couple of visits? Hadn’t they heard that potential clients/customers need time to get to know, like and trust you? What happened to building win-win relationships?
Here’s my advice: If you aren’t networking for the long haul then don’t bother networking at all. Frankly, you are wasting your energy if you expect instant
Get in touch within 48 hours of the event to show you're interested and available, and reference something you discussed, so your contact remembers
If you do not intend to follow up with the people you’ve met, stay home and don’t waste your time, or the time of others. The entire purpose of building a network is to develop solid win-win business-building relationships. And in every productive relationship, the key is to get to know, like and trust one another. Success Tip: It’s not just about what you want to achieve. Let your fellow networkers know that you want to support their successes as well. A key question to ask during the follow-up phase is: How can I help you succeed?

Chances are if a complete stranger wants to connect with you on LinkedIn, they probably see you as a prospect for what they’re selling. Accept these connections with caution.
