What	is	the	CREM	archive?	
The	audio	archives	of	the	CNRS	
–	Musée	de	l’Homme	gather	
commercial	and	unpublished	
recordings	of	music	and	oral	
tradi3ons	from	around	the	
world,	from	1900	to	the	
present.	Consis3ng	of	diverse	
types	of	media	(wax	cylinders,	
78rpm,	vinyl	records,	magne3c	
tapes,	audio	CDs,	born	digital	
records).

CREM’s	DATABASE	
Over	42,000	unpublished	sound	documents,		
32.000	are	available	for	listening,	spread	though		
represen3ng	about	4,000	hours	of	recordings	of	unpublished	
fieldworks.	
Over	13,000	published	materials,		
4,600	are	available	for	listening,		
represen3ng	about		3,700	hours	(including	more	than	5,000	
199	countries,	and	1,200	ethnic	and	social	groups	are	
represented,	making	it	possible	to	hear	a	wide	array	of	
musical	and	sung	expressions,	languages	and	dialects.	
21,000	recordings	are	available	for	listening	on	free	access.	
The	others	are	only	available	with	an	access	code.

for commercial purposes, it does not refer
to any standard or rules making ;
-  Recorded on analog or digital media

•  There	is	no	expression,	universally	recognizable,	
to	describe	the	concept	of	audiovisual	archives,	
like	the	words	"library"	or	"museum	».	It	is	a	
major	handicap…		
•  Audiovisual	archives	are	organiza3ons	or	
departments	within	organiza3ons	that	are	
dedicated	to	the	collec3on,	management,	
conserva3on	and	communica3on	of	a	collec3on	
of	audiovisual	materials	and	audiovisual	heritage.

What	is	Telemeta?	
Telemeta	is	an	open-source	sonware	plaoorm	designed	by	the	
Parisson	Company	which	facilitates	the	management	and	
indexing	of	sound	files	in	the	audio	database.		
The	a	free	digital	assets	management	system	(DAMS)	Telemeta	
manages	tasks	and	decisions	surrounding	the	inges3on,	
annota3on,	cataloguing,	storage,	retrieval	and	distribu3on	of	
digital	assets	(mainly	sound	and	audiovisual	files)	
	
Telemeta	can	be	downloaded	online,	embracing	a	philosophy	of	
knowledge	sharing.	Sounds	are	available	for	listening	in	a	
compressed	format	delivered	from	a	streaming	server.

Telemeta	is	focused	on	sound	
With	Telemeta,	sound	can	be	visualised	with	a	
dynamic	audio	player	using	TimeSide*,	an	open	web	
audio	processing	framework.

Various	graphical	representa3ons	can	be	chosen,	such	
as	the	waveform	or	the	spectral	view.	These	are	useful	
for	spoqng	speech	or	music	sec3ons	and	for	
naviga3ng	within	a	recording.	
	
*TimeSide	is	a	python	framework	enabling	low	and	high	level	audio	analysis,	imaging,	
transcoding,	streaming	and	labelling.	Its	high-level	API	is	designed	to	enable	complex	
processing	on	very	large	datasets	of	any	audio	or	video	assets	with	a	plug-in	
architecture,	a	secure	scalable	backend	and	an	extensible	dynamic	web	frontend.

What	kind	of	content	are	catalogued?	
The	database	is	organized	on	a	hierarchical	levels	of	
descrip3on:			
1.	Archives	Series	named	in	reference	to	the	collector	or	
the	depositor	of	the	audio	archive	(fonds).		
2.	Corpus/Collec[ons:	collec3on	is	the	main	level	of	
descrip3on	understood	as	an	accumula3on	of	materials	
devoted	to	a	single	theme,	person,	event,	or	type	of	
document	acquired	from	a	variety	of	sources).	>>	a	
relevant	ensemble	of	sound	items	corresponding	to	
recordings	collected	within	one	research	fieldwork	or	to	a	
published	record.	
3.	Item:	the	minimal	unit,	the	individual	sound	file	with	its	
own	set	of	informa3on.

-	Visitors	(users	without	a	login)	have	access	to	all	
the	metadata	of	the	catalogue.	In	addi3on,	they	
can	listen	to	all	free-access	recordings:	records	
published	by	the	Musée	de	l’Homme	and	all	
recordings	that	the	collector	and	musicians	agree	to	
disseminate	online.		
-	The	researcher	profile	(with	a	login)	can	access	all	
audio	archives	and	has	the	ability	to	edit	metadata	
and	annotate	the	audio	files,	in	keeping	with	the	
collabora3ve	nature	of	the	database.
