Indonesia contains over 45% of the global area of tropical peatland, mostly as extensive domes
of woody peat, supporting peat swamp forest that covers vast areas of lowland landscape
between major rivers. However, large areas of tropical peatland in Indonesia, however, have
been converted to agriculture; and this has led to widespread deforestation and drainage.

• Collaborative actions are a key factor for attaining peatland restoration
success;
• Local communities have to be in the front-line to make peatland restoration
success and sustainable;
• Local communities, Local NGOs & Local Universities have adequate
knowledge, capacity & experience to construct and maintain the rewetting
infrastructures;
• Under BRG’s coordinated & facilitated roles, stakeholders can deliver very
quick & high performance of restoration results;
• Peatland restoration is not merely physical and technical interventions, but,
the transformation of social & economic behaviors is a key to peatland
restoration success.

• Protecting and managing peatland in wise way is a key for achieving low
carbon economy;
• Good peatland practices and restoring degraded peatland can be a strategic
vehicle for reducing and avoiding climate changes impacts (CO2 & other
GHGs emissions);
• Wise use and good peatland practices as well as peatland restoration
Peatland restoration are constituted means for achieving Indonesia’s NDC;
• Collaborative among stakeholders (Government, private sector, donors, civil
societies, etc.) is widely opened for harnessing peatland wise management
and restoration through market-based mechanism (green bonds, etc.)

restoration policy, measures and actions into national,
regional & local planning & regulatory processes.
