Sustainability science is an emerging arena of scientific enquiry. Unlike traditional disciplinary research, sustainability science seeks to transcend boundaries between disciplines, and between researchers and other societal stakeholders. Here, I summarize five years of team research that investigated trajectories for sustainable development in Southern Transylvania, Romania. This region boasts some of Europe's most notable natural and cultural heritage, including traditional land use systems and their associated biodiversity (from wildflower meadows to the European Brown Bear). However, rapid socioeconomic changes, and associated changes in land use, are now threatening these traditional heritage values. The aim of our research was to better understand the changes taking place in order to obtain insights for how they may be navigated. To this end, we integrated insights from the social sciences and ecological sciences with local expert knowledge via an approach centered around the notions of "place", "case" and "process". This integration approach focuses all research participants on a shared problem (here, landscape change in Transylvania) and common units of analysis (here, selected villages), and emphasizes informal methods of knowledge integration. In the past five years, among others, we surveyed plants, butterflies, birds and mammals at over 120 sites; we interviewed hundreds of people about rural development, living with carnivores, and their aspirations for the future; we involved 18 stakeholder groups in developing scenarios exploring the future; and we prepared a traveling exhibition, an outreach tour, and a bilingual book to share our research findings with local communities. This presentation summarizes key highlights of this research project and considers avenues in which similar approaches could also be useful in other settings.

Not so wild on the Wild Coast: Landscape changes and threats to biodiversity on the Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast and the role of protected areas in communal areas 04/July/ 2012 Berliner, D.D Eco-logic consulting E mail:eco-logic@mweb.co.za The Pondoland centre of endemism is the smallest and perhaps the most vulnerable in South Africa. Its importance has been globally recognized by its inclusion within Conservation Internationals Maputu-Pondoland- Albany hotspot. The Wild Coast Project, a GEF funded initiative, administered by the ECPBT aims to establish a representative network of co managed protected areas across the Pondoland center and within the Wild Coast. A number of case studies are used to examine the key threats, systemic relationships between these, and the drivers of landscape change on the Wild Coast. In light of this, the question is asked: how effective the proposed community protected areas will be to ensure persistence of biodiversity on the Wild Coast? The case studies include a number of ecosystems, including mangrove estuaries, scarp forests, and the grasslands /thorn veld/forest mosaic. Case studies are the result of numerous site visits, literature reviews, discussion with locals, and GIS analysis of past areal and satellite imagery. The case studies reveal the essential paradox of conservation in communal areas, like the Wild Coast. On the one hand, the human footprint and level of transformation appears to be relatively low when compared to the highly transformed landscapes of commercial agriculture; but on the other hand, closer inspection and analysis of landscape and associated environment changes, reveals highly dynamic and vulnerable systems showing the signs of an ‘environmental meltdown’. This threatens not only the livelihoods of many depended on natural resources, but also the irreplaceable biodiversity associated with these areas.

Program code examples (known also as worked examples) play a crucial role in learning how to program. Instructors use examples extensively to demonstrate the semantics of the programming language being taught and to highlight the fundamental coding patterns. Programming textbooks allocate considerable space to present and explain code examples. To make the process of studying code examples more interactive, CS education researchers developed a range of tools to engage students in the study of code examples. These tools include codecasts (codemotion,codecast,elicasts), interactive example explorers (WebEx, PCEX), and tutoring systems (DeepTutor). An important component in all types of worked examples is code explanations associated with specific code lines or code chunks of an example. The explanations connect examples with general programming knowledge explaining the role and function of code fragments or their behavior. In textbooks, these explanations are usually presented as comments in the code or as explanations on the margins. The example explorer tools allow students to examine these explanations interactively. Tutoring systems, which engage students in explaining the code, use these model explanations to check student responses and provide scaffolding. In all these cases, to make a worked example re-usable beyond its presentation in a lecture, the explanations have to be authored by instructors or domain experts i.e., produced and integrated into a specific system. As the experience of the last 10 years demonstrated, these explanations are hard to obtain. Those already collected are usually “locked” in a specific example-focused system and can’t be reused. The purpose of this working group is to support broader re-used of worked examples augmented with explanations. Our current plan is to develop а standard approach to represent explained examples. This approach will enable an example created for any of the existing systems to be explored in a standard format and imported into any other example-focused system. We plan to follow a successful experience of the PEML working group focused on re-using programming exercises.
