group of people that is
organized for the purpose of
winning government
powers
Characteristics
• Organized structure with lines of authority
and power distribution
• Seek to attract popular support in the form of
votes
• Seek political power directly thru electoral
method
• Prepared to support a candidate and fight for
victory in an election (to gain power)
Types of Party Systems
• One-party system
• Bi or two-party system
• Multiparty system
One party system
• there is only one party who holds the power
because it towers above the other groups
because it suppresses all other groups
• With two sub-types:
a. The one party democracy – usually found in
newly independent states
b. The totalitarian party – communist states
Bi or Two-party system
• The turn-over system
• The system wherein major political parties
alternate with each other in exercise of power.
• In the US – Republican vs Democrats
Democrat – Liberal(L);
Republican – Conservative (R)
• In GB – Conservative and Labour parties
Multiparty System
• More than two political parties fight in an
election
• No single party gets majority control of the
power
• Leads to coalition of parties to secure a
governing control of government
• Transfer the consensus building on the floor of
the Congress
Electoral Systems
• Plurality Electoral System (first-past-the post
or winner-takes-all election)
• Majority Electoral System (50%+1)
• Proportional Representation (based on the
percentage)
