Scope
Demonstration of the economic viability of the efficient capture and utilisation of CO/CO2 streams from point
sources converting the streams into added value chemicals and materials in near to production size systems. The
technologies proposed should support cross-sectorial concepts and sector integration.
Business case and exploitation strategy to be designed in the proposal (3 more pages)
Expected outcomes
Projects are expected to contribute to the following outcomes:
• Master the capture, purification and conversion of CO/CO2 from process industry point sources and utilization
of renewable energy at reasonable costs ;
• Showcase the system effectiveness for the GHG emission avoidance in the process industries as well as the
scalability and the cost efficiency of the proposed concept. Include techno-economic analysis, including social
and environmental impact;
• Enable the economic viability of the entire unit to compete with the existing state of the art production of the
same or equivalent products at cost efficient environmentally friendly level ;
• Prove the efficient integration for the overall CCU process and use of renewable energy sources, and where
relevant account for their intermittency and the possibility to offer demand-response flexibility;

79
Scope
Joint collaboration between adjacent industries to minimise their CO2 footprint and circularise their
waste management/2ndary materials (-> hub for circularity). Re-integrate flows of urban wastes in
process industries (upcycling preferred).
• Create H4C, (non-)technological/(inter-regional), closing circularity loops for mixed/combined
materials streams, water, energy or combination.
• Management and processing of 2ndary resource streams (disassembly, sorting, purification, …),
logistics and trading feedstocks for plants, compagnies (incl. manufacturing industry). Digital tools,
sensor-based sorting & characterisation, material passport. IT infrastructures allowing
confidentiality.
• Co-development with urban district heating (cascading waste heat re-use)
• Foster partnerships (Symbiosis Readiness Level). Replication/extension plans, business cases and
exploitation strategy of “first of kind hubs”. 2-3 locations required. Implement social innovation
action, education. May use other funding sources (Innovation Fund, LIFE, InvestEU, ISEF, …)
Business case and exploitation strategy to be designed in the proposal (3 more pages)
Expected outcomes
• Reduce freshwater consumption by 50%, re-use 90% solid waste from water treatment
• Better industrial symbiosis, zero-waste, healthier environment

Scope
Assessment of air pollutants in priority of low-carbon fuels already demonstrated in real world applications or
foreseen to gain market share (‘Fit for 55’ package), but low- or zero-carbon fuels foreseen in the next decade can
be covered; A complete polluting emissions (beyond the currently regulated ones) speciation should be performed
in different working conditions encountered in real use.
Impacts on human health, in particular those of any emerging pollutants, environment and GHG effects (over the
next 20-years) should be assessed.
Expected outcomes To support the Zero Pollution Action Plan, project results are expected to contribute to all of
the following expected outcomes:
• The air pollutant emissions from combustion-based heavy-duty vehicles, aircraft and ships using alternative fuels,
with a broad coverage of existing powertrains and exhaust after treatment technologies, are measured and
characterised according to real-life scenarios of use.
• In light of recent WHO guidelines, concentrations of ultrafine particle emissions down to at least 10nm are also
measured and chemical compounds are characterised.
• Air pollution exposure projections based on plausible technological trajectories are produced, up to the year 2050.
• Technology packages to mitigate the emerging forms of pollution are proposed and projections updated
accordingly. Reliable scientific data to guide future policy and technology choices following the DNSH principle is
provided.
• Guiding principles to minimize emissions for designers and operators.

☛ changing climate many European regions facing more frequent, severe, and longer lasting droughts
☛ cascading effects; e.g., ↘ water levels in rivers and ground water, crop growth, ↗ pest attacks, favour the
occurrence of sand drifts and storms and fuel wildfires
☛ NBS utilise an understanding of the structure and functioning of local ecosystems over time to address water
quantity/quality, both in surface waters and in ground water
☛ 1st Stage: Blind evaluation, 2nd Stage: 17/09/24, Specific conditions on demonstration activities !
Expected outcomes
development of Nature-based Solutions (NBS) contributing to the sustainable management of water resources,
with a special attention to ↘ the impacts of extreme droughts
• Cost-effective ways of implementing NBS at large scale for integrated water management- widely
replicated
• Consolidated evidence of the contribution of NBS to sustainable water management and concerning the
reduction of impacts of droughts
demonstrate innovative, systemic NBS, for the management of catchment water resources and the reduction of
extreme drought risks - areas heavily impacted by temporary/ lasting water scarcity and increasingly exposed to
this risk with the deepening of climate change.

Clarifications of COM on HORIZON-CL6-2024-
ZEROPOLLUTION-02-1-two-stage
The questions were:
1. Based on the current scientific practices and the limited budget foreseen for the projects funded within this
topic, it is technically not feasible to monitor all types of pollutants. Can applicants focus on specific pollutants?
Is there a specific focus on pollutants that applicants should address?
2. An expected outcome of the project should be "Sound, safer and risk-based urban water quality management
plans". The terminology "risk-based" is not defined in the topic text or in the destination introduction. Could you
please provide a clear definition on how a "risk-based" approach should look like in the context of the topic?
The replies are as follows:
1. The topic is asking proposals to “develop an integrated and harmonised approach to monitor all sources of
surface and groundwater pollution and their impact” and not to monitor all type of pollutants. In this context we
considered that the indicative budget for proposals is sufficient to address (as much as possible) all type of
pollutants.
2. “Risk-based approach” in water has been defined in several state of the art publications available in the open
literature, as well as, in EU water related policies. For instance the revised Drinking Water Directive includes a
dedicated article on risk-based approach to water safety which provides information of the specific elements of
such a risk-based approach (Article 7). The recently proposed recast of the Urban Waste Water Treatment
Directive also propose a methodology to identify risks on a catchment (Article 18). These piece of legislations can
be taken as example to justify the approach retained by the applicants.

Increasing the circularity in plastics value chains
TOPIC ID: HORIZON-CL6-2024-CIRCBIO-02-2-TWO-STAGE
