1. ll arriva qu’en Inde,
naguère,
On demanda à six
aveugles,
De résoudre un mystère…
Ils devaient seulement le
toucher de leurs mains.
It happened once in India,
Six men from different
lands,
Were asked to solve a
mystery
By feeling with their hands.

2. On les conduisit donc auprès d’un
éléphant,
Ils allaient deviner, sans l’aide de
leurs yeux,
L’énigme qui se trouvait devant
eux.
Ainsi, on verrait bien le plus
intelligent.
They were taken to an elephant
With blindfolds on their eyes,
And asked to guess just what it was
To see if they were wise.

3. Le premier, s’approchant de
l’éléphant,
Vint buter contre son flanc, si large
et si dur
Qu’il se retourna en s’écriant :
« Ce mystère n’est autre qu’un
mur ! »
The first approached the elephant
And happening to fall
Against his broad and sturdy side,
At once began to call,
“Oh my, I think this mystery
Is nothing but a wall!”

4. Le deuxième, quant à lui, caressa
la défense,
« C’est rond, c’est lisse et c’est
pointu,
Cria-t-il d’un air entendu,
Ce mystère ne peut être qu’une
lance ! »
The second reached and felt the tusk;
He cried, “What have we here
So very round and smooth and sharp?
To me it’s truly clear
The secret of this mystery
Could only be a spear!”

5. Il arriva que le troisième,
approchant l’animal,
Saisit la trompe qui s’enroulait
devant,
Et proclama sur un ton doctoral :
La réponse à ce mystère est un…
serpent ! »
The third approached the animal
And happening to take
The squirming trunk within his hands,
Said, “No, you’re wrong, just wait!
It seems to me the answer
To our mystery is a snake!”

6. Le quatrième lui toucha le genou:
« C’est trop simple pour moi, je
l’avoue,
Il est évident, dit-il avec un air
farouche,
Que c’est un arbre que je touche »
The fourth reached out an eager hand
And felt about the knee.
“What could this wond’rous secret
be?
’Tis very plain to me.
It’s clear enough that what I feel
Is nothing but a tree!”

7. Le cinquième s’avança et lui tâta
l’oreille,
Une oreille ondoyante et de très
belle taille,
« Ridicule, dit-il, qu’une question
pareille !
Je sais qu’il s’agit là d’un puissant
éventail. »
The fifth who felt a waving ear,
Said, “Even a blindfolded man
Can tell what we have here;
Oh yes, I think I can!
It’s obvious this puzzle
Is a great and mighty fan!”

8. Le sixième annonça: « Faites
place, messieurs, »
Puis à tâtons, il attrapa la queue.
« Moi, je vais résoudre votre
minable discorde,
Je dis que nous avons affaire… à
une corde ! »
The sixth announced, “Please step
aside!”
As towards the beast he groped.
“I’ll give you my opinion!”
He confidently spoke.
He grabbed the tail, and cried, “Aha!
The answer is...a rope!”

9. Ainsi, nos braves continuèrent à se disputer,
Entêtés et butés, et se faisant la guerre.
Hélas, si seulement ils s’étaient écoutés,
Peut-être qu’ils auraient résolu le mystère !
And so these men with blindfolds on continued to protest;
Each one thought that he was right, not listening to the rest.
But if they’d worked together as a team in unity,
They would have had a better chance to solve the mystery.
