A FEW WORDS
• Who is a passionate teacher?
• Very simply, a passionate teacher is one that shows the
highest level of COMMITMENT to student learning
• This is achieved through many ways
• All of these must be delivered with the highest level of
Passion and Purpose
2
A FEW WORDS…Contd
• Commitment is an essential element of successful teaching.
• Committed teachers are concerned with the development of
their students and they profoundly struggle to keep students’
learning.
• Committed teachers cultivate students’ curiosity and interest
in learning.
• Showing commitment to students’ learning can be an
important factor in motivating students.
3
A FEW WORDS…Contd.
• Committed teachers recognize and endeavor to fulfill their
responsibilities to their students
• The degree of commitment teachers have towards their
profession is one of their distinguishing characters.
• Teachers who are engaged in their profession and committed
to students and their learning, play a crucial role in the
development of the students.
• Therefore, the keywords are: Passion, Dedication,
Commitment, Student Learning
4
INTRODUCTION
• What motivates and fires the effective teacher?
• This is a motivational presentation on Passion and Purpose
5
PASSION
“Those who feel the call to teach, who sense that
teaching is a profoundly meaningful part of their lives,
have a passion for teaching”
Teaching, Learning & Loving
-Reclaiming Passion in Educational Practice
(Edited By Daniel Liston & Jim Garrison)
6
WHAT IS PASSION?
• Strong and barely controllable emotion
• An intense desire or enthusiasm for something
• Passion simply is also defined as: “A strong inclination or
desire towards an activity that one likes and finds important
and in which one invests time and energy”
(Carbonneau, Vallerand, Fernet & Guay, 2008)
7
A PASSIONATE TEACHER
A passionate teacher is also described as: “someone in love with
a field of knowledge, deeply stirred by issues and ideas that
change our world, drawn to the dilemmas and potentials of the
young people who come into class every day”
8
A PASSIONATE TEACHER: KEY WORDS
• A passionate teacher is also described as:
 love with a field of knowledge,
 deeply stirred by
 issues and ideas that
 change our world, drawn to the
 dilemmas and potentials of the
 young people who come into class every day”
9
PASSION
• For high quality student learning passion is indispensable.
“When we discover and explore our passions about teaching and
learning, and begin to share them with others, doors are
opened, and the possibilities are endless”.
-Matthew H. Olson in the International Journal of Academic
Research in Progressive Education and Development, January
2013, Vol. 2, No. 1
10
PASSION
• Passion affects teachers’ performance and drives them
towards producing the best performance in students
• Passionate teachers create an effective learning environment
and increase learning potential of students.
• Passion leads to creativity; therefore, passionate teachers
have the ability to think and produce new notions in an easier
way
• Passionate teachers are committed and dedicated to their
schools and this produces high standards
11
PASSION
• Passionate teachers are fiercely devoted to their work and
greatly inspire their students.
12
DEDICATION & COMMITMENT
• The strength of any profession depends upon the degree of
commitment of its members. Teaching is no exception
• It is widely accepted that a distinguishing feature that
teachers have is their dedication and commitment to the
development of student achievement.
• Kushman (1992) and Rosenholtz (1989) in their studies put
forward the relationship between a teacher’s commitment
and students’ achievement
13
CONNECTION BETWEEN PASSION AND RESULT
• Fried (2001) supporting this idea states that there is a strong
connection between passionate teaching and the quality of
student learning
• What are the reasons for this connection between Passionate
Teaching and the Quality of Student Learning?
14
CONNECTION BETWEEN PASSION & QUALITY
• If students know that teachers get immersed in their subjects
and set high standards for them, they take their studies more
seriously. At this point, teaching ceases to be a job done by
force, and turns into an inspiration for students.
• Students will not have motivation to learn as long as they do
not have a clear idea of how to apply things they have learnt
to their own lives.
• Passionate teachers know that it is their role to encourage
students for active learning and concern themselves with
promoting students’ intellectual and moral development.
15
CONNECTION BETWEEN PASSION & QUALITY
• Committed teachers have a tendency to perform the roles
effectively that their job requires and to establish a good
teacher-student relationship in accordance with the
professional values.
16
TEACHERS’ COMMITMENT TO THE SCHOOL
• Commitment to the school manifests itself in identifying with
the school, feeling like a part of the school, and being loyal to
the school
• In successful schools, teachers have a commitment to the
school as well as their professions.
• This commitment forms a basis, propulsive force, and
resource in students’ development.
17
SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF COMMITTED
TEACHERS
• They constantly talk about developing teaching approaches
• Such teachers observe each other’s performance, and
evaluate their own performances through these observations.
• Teachers and principals together develop educational
materials and teaching methods
18

• Avoids condemning unpopular ideas and attempts to create a
culture of mutual interest and respect.
• Takes risks; allows mistakes but teaches lessons from mistakes
rather than ignoring or condemning them. He/she corrects
• Endeavors to establish and maintain a learning environment
where students fully interact
• Takes his/her missions seriously and reflects his/her ideas and
beliefs clearly.
19
BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF A PASSIONATE

knowledge and ideas
• Is not discouraged by a student’s lack of knowledge and skills
and will not allow this to be an excuse to decrease
compassion for them.

and effectively reflects on them
