CONSEQUENCES OF INEFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
We communicate to express ourselves. No matter how good or bad we are, how intelligent or
average we are, we need to communicate to define ourselves and form our impression in front of
others. If we are good at communicating it means we have delivered our ideas, our knowledge
effectively but we should also be a good listener. Communication becomes ineffective if; we start
talking instead of listening, we stop asking open-ended questions, we have harsh tone of voice, we
become defensive easily, we try to impose our ideas on others, and we try to dominate the
conversation and so on.
This lack of effective communication has many consequences, some are even long lasting.
1. It leads to frustration. If we cannot tell other person what we want in clear words, the next
person will not understand it clearly and both of us will become frustrated. We will become
frustrated that why cannot we talk clearly or why cannot the other person just get it and the
other person will get frustrated that what we are even trying to say.
2. It leads to misunderstanding. Understanding is the main point of communication. We
need our information to be understood and be used by others.
3. It leads to lack of trust. Either it is our home, workplace or social gathering, we need to
communicate effectively to promote a sense of trust. If our words, facial expressions and
hand gestures are ineffective, it can literally destroy our relationships. If we do not give
enough detail, forget to communicate important information and if we do not listen actively
then we cannot maintain our relationships.
4. It can cause others to think that we are not interested in whatever they are saying. If we
do not listen to the other person actively, we will not be able to respond effectively and ask

relevant questions. Since we will not be able to ask questions, it will cause other person to
think that we are not interested and the conversation will soon die out.
5. It can create a sense of confusion if we are not speaking clearly and concisely. If we use
words like ‘um’, ‘uh’ and ‘you know’ all the time it makes our speaking style less clear.
Such filler words can distract the listener and make us seem as if we not sure what we are
trying to say.
6. It can cause other to think that we are disrespecting them. If we interrupt others while
they are talking or try to justify our point of views all the time not giving importance to
what others are saying, it can have a long lasting effects. People will try to avoid us since
we have no respect for them or their views.
7. If we are talking in a monotone voice with neutral facial expression, it shows our lack of
enthusiasm and since we are not enthusiastic about our own ideas or message we will not
be able to convince others.
8. If we have a habit of whining and complaining about everything, it can cause our listeners
to get annoyed. People not only get annoyed but they can also tune us out or even avoid
us.
There are so many consequences that we have to face if our communication is flawed. But we
should try our best to know our weaknesses in communication and try to overcome them.
