1. Therapeutic riding is the practice of
horse-back riding for individuals with
neurological, developmental and psychiatric
disorders, whose focus and primary goal is
the improvement of the overall health of
the patient and amelioration of his quality
life. Thus the horse becomes a therapeutic
mean.
Hi.K.E.R. Therapist’s competances
Personalized evaluations and establishment
of functional and therapeutic goals for each
individual case
Creation of a structured training framework
Selection of the appropriate equipment and
therapeutic means for each session
Selection of the proper horse for the
session’s goals: proper gait and progression
within the arena
Designation of the appropriate grips used in
each therapeutic session
Hi.K.E.R.
The Hi.K.E.R. is a holistic approach to
therapeutic riding, based on the neuroplasti-
city of the brain, in other words, it’s ability to
change or modify both its structure and its
operation. One of the major factors contrib-
uting to the promotion of plasticity, while
rehabilitating people diagnosed with neuro-
developmental disorders, is to create an
environment rich in stimuli, similar to the
environment existing in real life which is set
up by the Hi.K.E.R. approach (with a rich
variety of games and activities). In this way,
the participant is the receptor of many
different stimuli, which simultaneously affect
several body systems such as the musculo-
skeletal, the sensory, the emotional and the
cardiovascular. Thus, the philosophy of the
Hi.K.E.R. approach is the following: the
process of the brain’s changes occurring via
and during the therapeutic riding session
absolutely requires a strictly structured
training framework. The establishment of
such a framework has to do with the
creation of the appropriate conditions which
will in turn promote the interaction between
client and the therapeutic riding environ-
ment. This will develop and encourage the
motor, perceptual, social, emotional and
cognitive learning as well as facilitate the
patient’s functionality and overall autonomy.
renforcent l'organisation physique et men-
motivation puissant.

2. Why horse
The bonding between the client and the
horse acts an important motivational factor
which aids him to overcome his motor or to
overcome motor or mental impairments.
This connection increases the production of
oxytocin, a hormone that has an anti-anxiety
effect and increases inter-personal attach-
ment and empathy. With Hi.K.E.R’s struc-
tured training framework, we can also
achieve:
• Increased concentration and attention
• Expansion of perception and cognitive
skills
• Amelioration of speech and
communication
• Increased socialization and sociability
• Increased self-esteem and self-confidence
The motion of the horse provides a 3-dimen-
sional movement which simulates the
human gait. With the body shifts which
occur during horse’s gate and the implemen-
tation of the correct grips we can achieve:
• promotion of normal posture and
movement patterns
• Improved righting and protective reactions
• Amelioration of muscle tone
• Improved balance and coordination
• Increased eye contact coordination.
The Environment in the Hi.K.E.R. approach
• The therapy is conducted in an out-doors
and natural environment which is also
enriched by a variety of therapeutic means
(games: balls, toys, etc) or visual stimuli
which enhance the patient’s physical and
mental organization (eg TEACCH).
• At the same time the therapists create or
take advantage of the stimuli elicited by the
exercises and games done, the environment
and the group of therapists surrounding the
horse and the patient.
• The patients who participate, due largely
to their surrounding environment (outdoors,
arena, etc) and the horse, view their sessions
less as a treatment and more as pleasurable
pastime. As a result, there is less fatigue or
emotional denial, even though riding on the
back of a horse can be a strenuous activity
for most. Thus, the sessions become particu-
larly effective as they incorporate rehabilita-
tion with a powerful incentive.
