Concentration
For Studies…
Dr Haroon Rashid
GOOD STUDY HABITS
PRODUCES GOOD GRADES!
SCHEDULE
Scheduling
 When and where you study
 How often you study
 How much time you waste
 The quality of your study time
 The “excuses” you use for not
studying
 Your Priorities
Carefully consider
Learn How to Make a Schedule
Make a list of daily activities and realistically estimate
the amount of time required to complete each.
Consider Priorities in this order:
1. In-class time
2. Work hours
3. Meals
4. Sleep
5. Classes outside school
6. Family Activities
7. Study block time
(begin with at least one hour a day)
8. Recreation time (include exercise)
Use a Daily Planner
Using a Day Planner,
write your activities in the time slots
Consider the following as you plan your time:
A. Make your schedule somewhat flexible.
a. Don’t schedule every hour of every day.
b. Leave room for the unexpected
(extra assignment, activity, etc.)
c. Leave room for change, but only
make a change for a good reason.
B. Write Legibly
C. Be realistic – know your limits
Post Schedules
and
Assignments/Lists
Keep your Day Planner/
Handbook with you
(You won’t follow your schedule
unless you look at it!)
On the refrigerator door
On a board
Include the following:
Study blocks
Family activities
Special events
Make and follow a daily “To-Do” list
Post Time Schedules of Home Activities
Try using your schedule for a week before making
changes.
Become familiar with your schedule and make it a habit.
Refer to it often throughout the day.
Carry it with you at all times.
Remember to be flexible and to change something …
only if there is a good reason.
Hints for Successful
Schedules
FOCUS AND
CONCENTRATION
Create A Positive Environment
 Find a place to study and keep it
for study only.
 Noise level and the visual
environment to acceptable
levels
 Avoid relaxing while working;
create a work atmosphere
Concentration Do’s
o Good lighting
o Ventilation
o A comfortable chair, but not too
comfortable
o A desk large enough to spread
out your materials
Concentration Don’ts
 A distracting view of other
activities that you want to be
involved in
 Laptop/ iPad
 Cellphone
 TV/ Music system
 A roommate or friend who wants
to talk a lot
 A refrigerator stocked with
scrumptious goodies
Staying Focused
 When distracters are present,
become intensely involved
 Keep a pad of paper handy to jot
down extraneous thoughts that cross
your mind while studying, get them
out of your mind and on to paper
 Set study goals before you begin
each period of study (number of
pages, problems)
 Design adequate rewards after
specified goals are attained
Staying Focused (Contd)
 Break-up the content of study by
mixing up subjects and building in
variety and interest and removing
boredom
 Make the most of rest periods-do
something different
 Don't try to mix work and play
 Start with short study periods and
build to longer periods only as fast
as you maintain concentration
NOW THE MOST AWAITED-
TIPS
Tip # 1
 Establish a consistent
time and place to study
each day. Look for a
place that has minimal
distractions and allows
you to fully concentrate.
Tip # 2
 Begin studying immediately
when you sit down with the
intention of studying. Checking
e-mails and FB gets you off
track and makes it less likely
that you are going to have a
successful and productive study
session.
Tip # 3
 Plan exactly what you want to
accomplish during the study
session prior to the session.
Make a list of these tasks and
stick to it during the study
session.
Tip # 4
 Break large tasks down into
smaller, more manageable
tasks. This will help you to
maintain focus and complete the
task quicker and easier.
Tip # 5
 Log what you have done during
a study session so that you can
look back and see just how
much you accomplished. This
will also help you to keep track
of what has already been
completed and what still needs
to be done.
Tip # 6
 Keep your study supplies and
designated studying space neat
and organized. This will let you
find what you need with ease
and will allow you to reduce
wasted time created by
searching for missing items.
Tip # 7
 Try to limit daydreaming by
allowing yourself adequate
breaks. Your goal should be to
stay as focused as possible
during the study session.
Tip # 8
 Get sleep! Getting enough
sleep helps you to study better
and remember more material.
Limit caffeine a few hours before
bed in order to assure that sleep
is uninterrupted.
Tip # 9
 Eat a healthy well balanced diet.
This will help you to feel better,
and will allow you to better
absorb and retain the
information you study.
 And remove wastes!
 Take plenty of water
Tip # 10
 Exercise! Exercising will help
you to increase your memory
which makes it easier for you to
retain important material.
Exercising will also improve your
overall confidence.
