External factors acting on a suspension bridge
1. EXTERNAL FACTORS
ACTING ON SUSPENSION BRIDGE
Wind
Wind conditions are acknowledged to affect the performance of cable
supported bridges, since the deck structure is comparatively more
flexible compared to other bridge structural systems.
Traffic & Vehicle Mass
Increased load raises bridge’s stiffness and vibrations increased.
May cause the bridge to collapse.
Temperature
Expansion and compression of the structure.
Reduce stiffness of structure.
Corrosion
When a bridge is made of steel, corrosions occur and cause the
bridge to become weaker.
This is why galvanized steels are used to build modern suspension
bridges.
