Abraham, ancêtre des Juifs et des Arabes, vécut vers 2000 av. J.-C. et devint croyant en un Dieu unique, quittant sa terre natale pour Canaan. Malgré son âge avancé, Abraham reçut la promesse de Dieu que sa femme Sarah donnerait naissance à un fils, Isaac, et il demeura ferme dans sa foi. Finalement, Sarah mit au monde Isaac à 90 ans, tandis qu'Hagar, la servante de Sarah, eut Ismaël, ancêtre des Arabes.

2. Abraham lived around 2000 B.C. and is
the ancestor of both the Jews and the
Arabs. At a time when polytheism—the
belief in multiple gods—was the norm,
Abraham became a believer in the one
and unseen God. At the behest of God he
left his native land in the area around
ancient Ur (in what is now southern Iraq)
and journeyed to the land of Canaan
(modern Israel and Palestine).
Abraham vécut aux environs de 2000
avant J-C. ; il est à la fois l’ancêtre des
Juifs et des Arabes. A une époque où le
polythéisme—c’est-à-dire la croyance en
de multiples divinités—était la norme,
Abraham devint adorateur du Dieu
unique et invisible. Sur l’ordre de Dieu, Il
quitta son pays natal, une contrée située
aux alentours de l’ancienne cité d’Our
(qui était située dans le sud de l’Iraq
actuel) pour se rendre au pays de Canaan
(la Palestine et l’Israël modernes).

3. Once in Canaan, God told Abraham,
“Look around you. Look north, south,
east, west. All this land that you see I will
give to you and your descendants.”
Abraham answered and said, “But
Lord, I have no children.”
God then led Abraham outside and
said, “Look at the sky and try to count
the stars. Your descendants will be
innumerable just like the stars in the
night sky.”
Le Seigneur dit à Abraham : « Porte
ton regard depuis l'endroit où tu es, vers le
nord et le sud, vers l'est et l'ouest. Tout le
pays que tu vois, je le donnerai à toi et à
tes descendants. »
Abraham répondit : « Seigneur mon
Dieu, à quoi bon me donner quelque
chose ? Je suis sans enfant. »
Le Seigneur fit sortir Abraham de sa
tente et lui dit : « Regarde le ciel et compte
les étoiles si tu le peux. Comme elles, tes
descendants seront innombrables . »

4. One day, Abraham was sitting at the
door of his tent when he looked up and
saw three men (The Lord and two angels)
standing in front of him. When he saw
the men, he ran to them and said, “Sirs,
please stay a while with me, your
servant. I will get some food for you.”
Abraham then brought some meat,
milk and cheese and set them down in
front of the three men.
Un jour, Abraham était assis à
l'entrée de sa tente et soudain il vit trois
hommes (Le Seigneur et deux anges) qui
se tenaient non loin de lui. Il dit à l'un
d'eux : « Je t'en prie, fais-moi la faveur
de t'arrêter chez moi. Je vous servirai
quelque chose à manger pour que vous
repreniez des forces, puis vous
continuerez votre chemin. »
Quand la viande fut prête, Abraham
la plaça devant ses visiteurs avec du lait
caillé et du lait frais.

5. Then the Lord said, “I will come again in the
spring. At that time your wife Sarah will have a
son.”
Sarah was listening in the tent. She laughed to
herself and said, “I am too old to have a baby.”
Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Sarah
laughed and said she was too old to have a
baby. But is anything too hard for the Lord? I will
come again in the spring, just as I said I would,
and your wife Sarah will have a son.”
L'un des visiteurs déclara : « Je reviendrai
chez toi l'an prochain à la même époque, et ta
femme Sara aura un fils. »
Sara se trouvait à l'entrée de la tente,
derrière Abraham et elle écoutait. Elle se mit à
rire en elle-même, car elle avait passé l'âge
d'avoir des enfants.
Le Seigneur demanda alors à Abraham :
« Pourquoi Sara a-t-elle ri ? Pourquoi se dit-elle :
«C'est impossible, je suis trop vieille pour avoir
un enfant» ? Y a-t-il donc quelque chose que le
Seigneur soit incapable de réaliser y ? Quand je
reviendrai chez toi l'an prochain à la même
époque, Sara aura un fils. »

6. The Lord came through and kept His
promise. Sara, at 90 years of age, got
pregnant and bore a son, Isaac, the
forefather of the Jews. And Sarah’s
handmaiden, Hagar, bore him
Ishmael, forefather of the Arabs.
Le Seigneur intervint en faveur de
Abraham, en faisant pour il ce qu'il
avait promis. Sara, âgée de 90 ans,
lui donna un fils, Isaac, l’ancêtre
des Juifs. Et Hagar, la servante de
Sara, lui donna Ismaël, l’ancêtre des
Arabes.

7. Abraham was seventy-five years old when
God first told Abraham that He would “make
you into a great nation.” And he was 100 years
old when Isaac was born. But Abraham never
doubted or questioned God’s promise. He
was certain that God could do what he had
promised.
The Bible says that it’s according to our
faith that it will be done unto us. So let’s dare
to have great faith! Will you? You can!
Abraham avait déjà soixante quinze ans
quand Dieu lui dit qu’Il « ferait de lui une
grande nation » et à la naissance d’Isaac, il
était âgé de cent ans ! Mais Abraham ne
perdit pas confiance et ne douta pas de la
promesse de Dieu. Il était absolument
certain que Dieu a le pouvoir d'accomplir ce
qu'il a promis.
La Bible dit que "Parce qu’il nous sera fait
selon notre foi et notre conviction." Alors,
osons avoir beaucoup de foi. Vous aussi,
vous le pouvez !
