Beyond the RTOS: A Better Way to Design Real-Time Embedded SoftwareQuantum Leaps, LLC
Embedded software developers from different industries are independently re-discovering patterns for building concurrent software that is safer, more responsive and easier to understand than naked threads of a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS). These best practices universally favor event-driven, asynchronous, non-blocking, encapsulated state machines instead of naked, blocking RTOS threads. This presentation explains the concepts related to this increasingly popular "reactive approach", and specifically how they apply to real-time embedded systems.

At least 400 million people worldwide lack access to essential health services and 2 billion cannot afford the medicines they need. Meanwhile, the global cost of healthcare has jumped to 6.5 trillion US dollars. Access is a huge and complex issue, which affects both developing and developed countries.

Given a desire to improve our software development endeavours, we tend to apply models and frameworks like Scrum, Kanban, LeSS, SAFe, even a custom implementation of Agile itself, without really understanding what our current model is, or what we value.
This approach leads us to do things and reject things in an ad-hoc way; not knowing whether the change will actually result in improvements in the areas where we need it most.
At an organisational level, we often don’t even want or value “agility”. We default to notions of “making the organisation agile” or “scaling agile” without confirming if that is what is actually desired.
This talk will take the audience (minus an agenda) through three simple steps to improvement, by:
1) Understanding goals;
2) Understanding desired cultural values on key dichotomy scales; and
3) Synchronising in iterations.
At a small company/single product level, following these steps might result in a group of people synchronising to product goals as a Scrum team. At a larger company/multiple product level (aka “at scale”), it might result in teams across departments being synchronised to organisational goals via organisational sprints/iterations.
The audience will come away with practical steps to effecting team, multi-team or full organisational change, in the area of product development. Underpinning these steps will be the key message that Agile, Scrum, Kanban and Lean Principles can aid the improvement journey: but none of these things should be a goal in itself.

Smart Cities - Why they're not working for us yet.Rick Robinson
My presentation to the April 2016 Eurocities Knowledge Sharing Forum in Rennes. My focus was on describing Smart Cities as an economic and political challenge; and exploring the policy mechanisms that could be used to incentivise private sector investments in business and technology to support local social, economic and environmental outcomes. Further description and supporting evidence for these ideas can be found at https://theurbantechnologist.com/2016/02/01/why-smart-cities-still-arent-working-for-us-after-20-years-and-how-we-can-fix-them/
Enabling blazing fast search on a 1 billion member social network demands special weapons and tactics. In Evojam we took advantage of the Scala ecosystem and modern tools to realize persistence and processing of such a data set.
Case study focused on the client requirements and tools we have made use of to meet them. Thoughts, injuries and ideas about real life fast & big data challenge brought to you directly from the trenches.

The document discusses 101 mistakes that can be made when configuring Kafka. Some of the key mistakes discussed include:
1) Not distinguishing between internal and external data when publishing to Kafka topics
2) Not defining schemas for Kafka data externally such as in a schema registry
3) Using the same Kafka configuration for all topics and clients instead of tailoring configurations based on individual needs
4) Defaulting all topics to 128 partitions without considering actual throughput needs
5) Deploying Kafka in production on overloaded nodes that were intended for proof-of-concept use only
The internet has transformed our lives, particularly in the way we access information and communicate with each other. Today academic physicians have more tools than ever in the form of social networking and other online resources to disseminate their scholarly work worldwide. Some of these sites even provide analytics that can help academic physicians measure and report their reach, and these metrics may be useful when filing for promotion.
When asked what they want most out of life, many people would put happiness at the top of their list. But what is happiness and what can we do to be happy? Insights from INSEAD faculty and researchers from around the world reveal the different ways to build a happier life.

Updated! -- #AIIM16 keynote -- Why the H**** Should You Care About Informatio...John Mancini
The document discusses how technology has rapidly advanced since 1996 and the implications for information professionals. It notes that in 1996, the internet was in its infancy with few users and services that now exist like Google, YouTube, and Wikipedia did not yet exist. The document then discusses how digital disruption is accelerating through changes in mindsets, messages, money, and machines. This has implications for how people work with processes and technology. Specifically, it means process owners can implement their own solutions, everything begins with mobile, and configuring/connecting skills are key. It raises questions around who now owns the big picture and provides adult supervision over these diverging perspectives between people, processes, and technology.
10 SQL Tricks that You Didn't Think Were PossibleLukas Eder
SQL is the winning language of Big Data. Whether you’re running a classic relational database, a column store (“NewSQL”), or a non-relational storage system (“NoSQL”), a powerful, declarative, SQL-based query language makes the difference. The SQL standard has evolved drastically in the past decades, and so have its commercial and open source implementations.
In this fast-paced talk, we’re going to look at very peculiar and interesting data problems and how we can solve them with SQL. We’ll explore common table expressions, hierarchical SQL, table-valued functions, lateral joins, row value expressions, window functions, and advanced data types, such as XML and JSON. And we’ll look at Oracle’s mysterious MODEL and MATCH_RECOGNIZE clauses, devices whose mystery is only exceeded by their power. Most importantly, however, we’re going to learn that everyone can write advanced SQL. Once you learn the basics in these tricks, you’re going to love SQL even more.

Elie Cohen, directeur général de Consort NT, parrain depuis 2013.
