Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Bonjour, je vais présenter mon exposé: La crise alimentaire dans le Sahel. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bonjour, je m’apelle Marc Romeu et je vais présenter mon éxposé: Le Sahel et la securité alimentaire de ses habitants. Avant de procéder (commencer), (nous verrons plus détails dans les diapositives suivantes… ) je voudrais seulement commenter, pour situer à l’audience (pour vous situer), que le Sahel est une région de l’Afrique centrale. Alors je parlerai des problèmes alimentaires de la population de cette région.
Pour commencer, je veux expliquer comment est-ce que j’ai décidé de consacrer le sujet de mon exposé au Sahel. Le dernier 8 février j’était en train de lire le journal français Le Monde (en cherchant un sujet intéressant) quand j’ai lu une nouvelle épouvantable qui m’a touché: “Forte inquiétude sur la sécurité alimentaire au Sahel…État d’urgence pour 20% de la population du Niger” L’article racontait la situation de gravité extrême à laquelle les habitants du Sahel sont soumis à cause de la manque de nourriture. À propos de cette lecture je me suis interessé au sujet et j’ai cherché en peu plus d’information pour comprendre mieux le problème. Alors, comme vous avez vous dans la première diapositive j’ai intitule mon exposé “Le Sahel et la sécurité alimentaire de ses habitants”
Pour comprendre mieux le problème, on parlera de differents point liés au sujet. D’abord je présenterai qu’est-ce qu’on connait pour le Sahel, quelle es sa situation geographique, son climat, et la situation politique de quelqu’un des ses pays. Ensuite je parlerai des causes de la famine, soit la manque de nourriture, et après nous verons quelques chiffres en montrant des grafiques. Finalement no verons ce que le monde devrai fair pour donner solution au problème.
Le Sahel, qu'en arabe signifie frontière, est une zone de transition entre le désert du Sahara, au nord, où le climat est très sec, et la savane, au sud où il y a plus de végétation et les pluies sont assez regulières. Sur la photo du satellite on peut voir les differences entre le Sahara et la Savane. Le Sahara est tout plein de sable, il n’y a pas de végetation, et alors il n’est pas possinle l’agriculture. Par contre, la savane est très riche en végetation, et est le refuge de beaucoup d’espèces animaux. Mais ce changement est progressif: en allant du nord au sud, la pluviométrie augmente peu à peu jusque à la savane où les pluies sont assez fréquentes. Il s'agit d'un espace qui couvre plus de 5,4 millions de kilomètres carrés et que traverse différents pays comme le Sénégal, la Mauritanie, le Mali, le Burkina-Faso, le Niger où le Tchad. Ceux sont quelques uns des pays les plus peuvres du monde. Ils sont des pays francophones, anciennes colonies françaises.
La situation politique de ces pays est un peu compliquée et n’est pas toujours stable. Par exemple, il y a seulement une semaine que le Niger a apparu sur tous les médias (télévision, radio, internet). La cause était un coup d’État dirigé par des militaires. Le président nigérien Mamadou Tandja a été arrêté et la constitution du pays a été suspendue ainsi comme totes ses institutions. Les militaires disent que l’objectif est restituer la démocratie au pays. La population de la capital du Niger, Niamey, a sorti sur le rue pour manifester son appui aux militaires. Conseil suprême pour la restauration de la démocratie.
La situation alimentaire dans le Sahel est déjà une situation critique puisque 300000 enfants meurent chaque année. Mais il y a, en plus, d’autres facteurs qui conduisent à la hausse de la malnutrition: - L’année derniere était marquée par un fort déficit pluviométrique - Par consequence: - Les productions céréalières 2009-2010 de la plupart des pays du Sahel ont diminué - Provoque une augmentation de la mortalité du bétail dont ils ont besoin pour cultiver les champs - En plus, la crise economique mondiale provoque aussi une augmentation des prix. Alors... nous sommes dans une période de difficulté extrême pour les populations les plus désavantagées. La situation alimentaire dans le Sahel, où 300000 enfants meurent déjà chaque année de malnutrition, suscite un nombre croissant d’inquiétudes. L’année écouléeL'any vençut, l'any pasaat ayant été marquée par un fort déficit pluviométrique, les productions céréalières 2009-2010 de plusieurs pays ont été sérieusement amputées: -34% au Tchad, –26% au Niger et –10% au Burkina Faso, selon une note interne de deux agences onusiennesRelatiu a la ONU , le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) et l’Organisation des Nations unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO). À cela s’ajoute la crise économique : le shilling somalien ne vaut presque plus rien ; la hausse mondiale des prix des denrées alimentaires fait que le Vietnam, la Thaïlande, le Kenya préfèrent garder leur production plutôt que l’exporter, en particulier vers la Somalie. Et l’insécurité rend notre accès aux populations particulièrement difficile cette année. Décrément des productions céréalières aux pays du Sahel

A fin décembre 2009, les stocks alimentaires de l’ensemble des ménages du pays ne leur permettaient de couvrir leurs besoins, en moyenne, que pour 2,8 mois.
