2. Technologies that have impacted film
PDME
• In feburary 2010, Nick Roddick said – “Technologies have
not only changed the business of a film but also changed
the importance of story”
• Annual tickets have decreased because customers have
found better ways to watch their movies through illegal
streaming online and video sharing (Netflex). This is also a
cheaper option. – In 2012, 179mil videos were sold and
went down by 14% in 2011. This is because people have
found new ways to watch films as mentioned above.
3. Taken 2 vs. Angels’ Share
• P – Taken 2 was shot using the latest digital technology, trying to
distance itself from 35mm technology, to try and follow the
current trends of the industry, moving away from this old and
expensive method of exhibiting a film. 3D and IMAX ensures that
the customer can choose how they experience the screening at
the box office. For example, Wolverine Unleashed had a 3D
experience option and grossed around $414mil at the box office.
Marvel Entertainment had a co-production deal with 20th Century
Fox to help distribute the film.
• However…
• P – The director of Angel’s Share edits on film and is one of the
few directors that “do”. Ken Loach rebels against anything that
takes his approach away from film making despite economic
pressure and the ability to project the film in multiplexes and
other large cinema chains. He does not want to move towards the
power and greed of film making.
4. Taken 2 vs. Angels’ Share
• DM -The backing of 20th Century Fox as it is part of the
big six ensured that there was high demand for the film
($150m). This means that Taken 2 has the potential of
becoming a very popular film through NewsCorps
other media industries. E.g. Red Top Tabloids In The
UK. In terms of distribution and marketing of the film.
• However…
• DM - Angels Share has a synergy with Twitter to inform
the audience of Ken Loaches unique approach to film
making which removes the “only obligation is to make
money” – Don Simpson
5. Taken 2 vs. Angels’ Share
• DVD sales reached ($30m) on DVD sales alone. 68% of the
production budget through VOD such as Netflix and home
viewing capabilities such as Box Office has ensured that Taken
2 can recoup its production and marketing budget with a
combined $70m.
• However…
The Angel’s Shares limited release s due to Ken Loach’s cold
reluctance to adapt to the blockbuster film market
(“diminished expectations”). The Angels Share lacked certain
qualities that you expect to find in a blockbuster film like
Taken 2: CGI, Predictable narrative and superheroes for
instance. This links back to the way Nick Froddick says:
Technologies have impacted the business of film and
changed the importance of story making.
