America is a really big community. Broomfield is a big community. Kohl Elementary is a community. Our classroom is a community…and yep first graders are a part of all of these communities and it is your responsibility to be a good member of any community that you belong to!!!!
A good citizen has RESPECT for themselves and others. A good citizen shows INTRGRITY when he/she makes choices. A good citizen is DETERMINED to do what is right. A good citizen shows equity to everyone, even when it is hard.
Now that we know what all of our R.I.D.E. words mean, we need to add them to our word wall. See if you can use them in you social studies draft books!
When we recognize others for their differences and accept them we are respecting their rights. That is part of being a good citizen. When everyone is free to be who they are a community grows together.
“Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same.” When we do the right thing when nobody is looking and when it isn’t popular we area acting with integrity.
“The difference between the possible and the impossible lies in a person’s determination” Working hard even when it seems too hard is showing determination.
Making sure that we all have the same chances to be great is showing equity.
When you see another student showing Respect, Integrity, Determination, or Equity write THEIR name on a ticket and the R.I.D.E. word you want to reward them for. Put the ticket in the ticket box, and at the end of the week I will pick three tickets. If I call your name you can pick out of the treasure box!
We are going to read We Live Here Too, by Nancy Loewen. In this book kids just like you are going to talk about what good citizenship means to them.
We are going to start our own citizenship book! When you see somebody being a good citizen draw a picture or write about it during writing block and put it in the “citizenship” folder. I will turn all of your work into a book!
Did you know that you can get your driver’s license to push the students’ wheelchairs around school? Go to the resource room and take the training class to be a Licensed Helper!
Some of our best learning happens when we learn from each other. Our classroom are a learning community and helping each other makes us good citizens!
Our Grandparents are special people and they need to know that they are special. Taking care of the older members in a community is important and you guyscan help!
The words that we choose effect everyone around us. When we use hurtful words the whole community suffers. Choose you words very carefully and ask yourself, “ Would I still say this if everyone could hear me?”
Kids can and do make a difference by protecting our planet. Make every day Earth Day by cleaning up after yourself and others.
A little bit of change might not seem like a lot, but when you add up everyone’s change it can be a whole lot! When you bring back your pennies for peace boxes you are making a big difference in the world.
We are going to go through the writing process for the next few days. You topic is going “How I can be a good citizen.” Use our word wall and write your initial ideas in your draft book.
Use all of the ideas in your draft book to write your story about how you can be a good citizen. During writing center I will help you with punctuation and spelling, but use your word wall and try to remember your capitals, periods, excitement mars, and question marks.
Now we are going to publish our stories and make illustrations. We will be displaying our stories in the hallway on our class bulletin board.
Now you guys have lots of good ideas and information about being a good citizen. You guys are our future and it all starts right here in our classroom. Use what you have learned to go out and MAKE A DIFFERENCE because YOU CAN!
