Stem:
Take the “nous” form of the verb
Drop the “ons”
Nous pensons Nous pens-
Add the endings -ais/-ais/-ait/-ions/-iez/-aient
Par exemple: je pensais/tu pensais/il
pensait/nous pensions/vous pensiez/ils pensaient
Être has an irregular stem: “ét.” Par exemple:
Quand j’étais jeune, je lisais tout le temps

We use the imperfect to evoke:
To set the scene for a story
Repeated actions in the past/the way things
“used to be”
Mental or emotional states
Ongoing actions (imparfait) that are
interrupted by other actions (passé composé)

REPEATED ACTIONS/THE WAY THINGS USED TO BE:
Quand j’avais dix-huit ans, je ne restais jamais chez
moi. Je sortais dans les bars tout le temps, je buvais
beaucoup et je fumais comme un vrai Français.
MENTAL/EMOTIONAL STATES:
Le weekend dernier, j’étais très nerveux parce que
j’avais beaucoup de travail à faire pour préparer mes
cours.
INTERRUPTED ACTIONS:
Je parlais au téléphone quand tu es entré dans la
salle. <The action which is ongoing is in the
imperfect; the action which interrupts the ongoing
action is in the passé composé.>
