3. Common –ER Verbs
(This is the infinitive form which always translates as “to + the verb”)
• travailler – to work étudier – to study
• écouter – to listen nager – to swim

• manger – to eat aimer – to like/love
• jouer – to play
• parler – to speak/talk
• regarder – to watch
4. Expressions of Jouer
Jouer à – Sports/Games Jouer de – Instruments
Il joue au foot. Je joue du piano
Elle joue aux dames. Tu joues de la guitare.
Nous jouons au volley. Marie joue des cymbals.
Different prepositions will follow the verb
jouer depending on the activity:
jouer à is used with both sports and board
games.
jouer de is used with musical instruments
These prepositions will contract with the
definite article of the noun (activity) that
follows:
• à + le = au
• à + les = aux
• de + le = du
• de + les = des
(Note - la and l’ do not contract with either
à or de, so the preposition and these
articles will remain two separate words.)
5. -IR Verbs
• Take off the “ir” and add the following endings
Finir – to finish
Je finis nous finissons
Tu finis vous finissez
Il finit ils finissent
Elle finit elles finissent
• Common -IR verbs: Choisir – to choose, réussir – to succeed, finir – to
finish, réfléchir – to reflect, remplir – to fill out, rougir – to blush
6. - RE Verbs
• Take off the “re” and add the following endings
Vendre – to sell
• Je vends nous vendons
• Tu vends vous vendez
• Il vend_ ils vendent
• Elle vend_ elles vendent
• Re verbs: descendre – to descend, perdre – to lose,
répondre – to answer, attendre – to wait
7. Regular Verb Summary
• French verbs usually end in –er, -ir, or –re.
• You take off the ending and add a new ending that must match the
subject. Look for patterns and similarities to help you remember.
• There are 3 different translations possible for each subject/verb in the
present tense.
• Example: tu travailles: you work
• you do work
you are working
8. Irregular Verbs
• French has irregular verbs, just like English. These verbs do not follow
the normal rules.
• You’ve already been learning and using some of these irregular verbs
in certain phrases.
• (il fait, je suis, il est, je vais, tu vas, j’ai, il a)
• (EX: Il fait beau, je vais bien, j’ai besoin de…)
9. Expressions of Avoir
• j’ai nous avons
• tu as vous avez
• il/elle a ils/elles ont
avoir – to have Attention! Most phrases in English that
use is/are (a form of the verb “to be”)
will use avoir, NOT être, in French!
These types of expressions are called
idioms – they are phrases that do not
translate directly between language. It
is important to translate them according
to the rules of each language.
Expressions we have already learned:
• avoir…ans – to be…years old
• avoir besoin de – to need
• avoir faim – to be hungry
• avoir soif – to be thirsty
• il y a – there is/are
Other expressions you may have seen:
• avoir froid/chaud – to be cold/hot
• avoir raison/tort – to be right/wrong
• avoir sommeil – to be tired
• avoir de la chance – to be lucky

12. Double Verb Constructions
While most verbs will follow this format in the double verb
construction, several verbs will require the use of a
preposition between verbs. These verbs include, but are not
limited to:
* venir - Elle vient de faire du ski.
* apprendre - J'apprends à parler allemand.
* commencer - Il commence à étudier.
* avoir besoin - Nous avons besoin de travailler.
Note also that the preposition used can change the meaning
of the verb:
* Je viens pour regarder la télé. - I come to watch to tv. (I
haven't yet begun watching tv.)
* Je viens de faire les devoirs - I come from doing homework.
(I just finished doing homework.)
