4. Librarians everywhere deliver value for their users in ways that are uniquely
tailored to those users’ needs.
Where this value is acknowledged and supported, we should reinforce and
celebrate the people involved.
Where this value is at risk – whether through ignorance, antipathy, inertia or
economic pressure – we should organise ourselves to challenge & change the
situation using a combination of argument, evidence, regulation & influence.
We should also acknowledge that we need to keep moving – keep adapting to
the changing needs of the communities and companies we serve & ensure that
we are positive and proactive in supporting them.
That’s the purpose of this Action Plan.
5. CILIP’s charitable purpose (as defined by our Royal Charter)
“To work for the benefit of the public to promote education
and knowledge through the establishment and development
of libraries and information services and to advance
information science (being the science and practice of the
collection, collation, evaluation and organised dissemination
of information).”

A lifetime of using libraries (& all of the benefits that
provides) begins with your reading experiences at
home, at school & in public libraries
Securing universal access to quality school
library services is an essential first-step in
developing a society of library users &
advocates
10. Advocating for School Libraries
• We are all CILIP – harnessing staff capacity & skills to SLG expertise & insight
• We are not our audience
• We like the right answer, they like the simple answer
• We like our words, they like their words
• We care about our needs, they care about their needs
• Hearts & minds won’t win – tactics, facts & opportunism will
• No ‘big victories’ – lots of small ones
• Means, motive, opportunity – who can help us, how can they help us, why
should they help us, what is their opportunity to help us?

23. Advocating for School Libraries
• We want to work with SLG over the next 4 years to create, deliver and
promote an effective ongoing campaign around school libraries
• We need your knowledge & overview to understand what winning looks like
across the school library sector
• Recognising that the school/school library community is incredibly diverse &
many different ways of achieving ‘excellence’
• Can we work with you to define tactics and deliver action to achieve this
outcome?
