We all understand that Microsoft and EMC both compete and cooperate. The benefits of our partnership far outweigh the costs associated with competing. But what combines our respective strategies? It is data! And data is growing exponentially, not linearly. Social media and adoption of devices in a mobile workplace are just some of the culprits. At the same time staff is growing only marginally, overall budgets are expected to be flat. Add to that the fact that most of the IT admin’s time is spent on keeping the lights on and you can see the dilemma.If we believe the projected growth rates the amount of data an admin needs to manage in 10 years is 20x of that today. So virtualization will merely be a fact of life. Not virtualizing will simply not be feasible because the only way to get efficiencies is to share resources. But beyond that admins need to automate as many tasks as they can, whether it is workflows or performance tuning. But since virtualization also abstracts the applications and server resources from the physical hardware we need powerful visualization and orchestration software. Exponential growth of VMs per physical hardware only compounds the issue.
So let’s take a look at the various areas in which EMC and Microsoft come together to address these challenges. The way Microsoft organizes their stack is to break it down into Core Infrastructure (Windows Server, Hyper-V which is a server role of the OS, and System Center), Application Platform (which is SQL), and Business Productivity (Exchange, SharePoint, Lync). These apply to on-premise and cloud deployments equally. Of course Microsoft also layers Dynamics ERP software on top of the stack but for purpose of this presentation we will not get into it. That said, we have customers running it on the VNX today. The challenges IT admins have vary depending on who you talk to:General IT Admins who deal mainly with system administration often struggle with increasing management overhead which make sense if you look at the growth we just discussed. Beyond that they need the ability to correlate events across an entire stack consisting of storage, fabric, servers, and applications – both physical and logical. Among others they need these tools to resolve issues quickly and remediate performance issues. The DBA – apart from patch updates – will want to ensure that the business can access the information managed in the database quickly. And of course the business also focuses on analyzing the information. Raw data is useless to the business. Critical information that takes too long to retrieve results in a company not being competitive.Folks who manage Exchange and SharePoint need to find ways to better connect people to the information they need wherever they are. SharePoint is quickly moving to the center of the Productivity suite and is absolutely strategic to the business. Why? Because it is deployed as the backbone for unstructured data access and management of the knowledge worker today!Nowadays businesses want the entire stack to be 100% available and 100% protected. This puts EMC in a unique position to be the foundation of what we just talked about…
We will review these all in detail but each area represents an area where EMC and the VNX provides demonstrable value to customers running Microsoft applications. We have a variety of Windows Server 2012 related integration points .. More later. We provide the means to take cycles out of repeating tasks like provisioning. And our System Center management packs provide a wealth of tools to enable event correlation, visualization, orchestration, and the ability to build self-service portals. Our VNX FAST Suite provides the best performance for the critical center piece: SQL. And while we can boost transactions and improve response times, we simultaneously lower CAPEX and OPEX by putting data where it belongs minimizing drive counts, power & cooling costs, and floor space. Many of our customers today already rely on the VNX for mixed workloads to streamline management and recovery processes and improve asset utilization. Beyond that we work with ISV partners to give customers tools to recover individual items, shrink and consolidate databases, and manage VNX storage straight from the SharePoint Central Admin console.
There are really four main areas:Windows Server 2012 provided a lot of enhancements around performance and availability. This includes the Hyper-V hypervisor that is now much more scalable. Hyper-V now supports up to 64 nodes and up to 4,000 concurrent VMs. A lot of the features we are familiar with from Vmware are now available in Hyper-V as well: LiveMigration (Vmotion) and ODX Copy Offload (VAAI Copy Offload) to name two. Windows Server 2012 also introduces SMB3 (CIFS) as an enhanced file protocol. VNX was the first to market with this feature other than Microsoft of course! EMC was also a first mover around ODX copy offload demo’ing the throughput improvements at the opening keynote at TechEd 2012. EMC also provides ESI to streamline tedious management processes like provisioning storage to a SharePoint farm. Rather than going through multiple user interfaces, ESI consolidates basic management into a single MMC based tool.Our System Center management packs give customers the ability to extend they well established System Center features to the VNX array. This provides customers the ability to provision VNX storage, correlate events, create run books, and self-service portals to name some examples. While most of this either benefits performance & availability or ease of use, we also realize customers rely of PowerShell. Our rich set of PowerShell comandlets allow customers to leverage scripts and customize their environment. Note To Presenter on Competitive Differentiation:Integration with Microsoft Private Cloud:The VNX was the first platform to provide meaningful integration with Windows Server 2012. Microsoft demo’d ODX copy offload on the VNX at the opening keynote at TechEd 2012. We also were a first mover around SMB3 support which is just now being added by NetApp. Other vendors like IBM, HP, and HDS are still behind. VNX also offers differentiation across areas like streamlined management and orchestration via our ESI plug-in and System Center management packs. Beware that NetApp has decent management packs too but the ability to take provisioning into the application itself is an advantage and should be demo’d. Most customers don’t even know about it and are impressed. Other competitors lack in these areas.
So why is the VNX optimized for Hyper-V or better the Microsoft Private Cloud? There are many integration points so here are just some examples. You are all familiar with our element manager which gives the storage admin a lot of flexibility to manage and tune the storage components that tie to the Hyper-V VMs.On the right you have the world that the general IT admin lives in. This world is becoming more important by the minute. And this is the area where we provide a lot of the workflows and event correlation tools to enable end-to-end management.And then there are things that are just optimized through the API similar to our VAAI integration. Most prominent is the copy offload feature which allows the array to offload the copy operation to the backend array alleviating host side IO and network traffic. We’ve accelerated copy operations by 7x at the Microsoft Technology Center while lowering CPU utilization by 30x. In fact, the server-side CPU was barely impacted at all.

The other area is our EMC Management Packs for System Center (SC), a very popular management & orchestration framework from Microsoft. There are multiple components to System Center and what we do is extend these powerful tools into the storage subsystem. System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) management packs allow SC perform infrastructure management including VNX storage. You can discover, classify, and provision storage on EMC arrays through the SCVMM console. SCVMM 2012 SP1 fully automates the assignment of storage to a Hyper-V host or Hyper-V host cluster, and tracks storage that is managed by SCVMM. To enable these storage features, SCVMM 2012 SP1 uses the new Microsoft Storage Management Service to communicate with external arrays through an SMI-S provider.System Center Orchestrator (SCO) allows users to create workflows to automate common tasks such as creating file systems, LUNs etc. In SCO 2012 SP1 a runbook can automatically create and deploy virtual machines and provision storage as well as perform numerous other activities. The SCO 2012 SP1 Runbook Designer is used to design and manage runbooks, where all activities can be connected and the running order set.System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) provides administrators with an easy way to gather data and generate reports about a private cloud. After the SCVMM Management Packs are imported into SCOM, administrators can generate reports for tracking the logical and physical consumption of resources within the private cloud fabric (storage, network, and compute). Powerful visualization helps users understand the relationships between physical and logical volumes on the storage subsystem, hosts, VMs, and applications. This is very powerful because a use can identify when a drive failure impacts a SQL DB or SharePoint farm, something that otherwise would take a long time. Lastly Service Center allows uses to build their self-service portals allowing authorized users to provision VMs, create SQL clusters, schedule maintenance jobs etc. That’s exactly what one of our large VNX customers in Sweden is doing.
