Thanks for the Introduction Sandy, I’m really excited to be presenting this topic today on Health Hazards. In my opinion in OHS practice, Health Hazard are overlooked because they are a bit more challenging to understand. When we look at Health Hazards we are looking at Occupational Hygiene, the overall health promotion and protection of the workplace. We will be taking a look at standard health hazards that most workplace have (including offices, you might not think this applies, there are varying degrees). However your business can be large and complex or small and specialized, Health Hazards do exist.
Exposure to Health Hazards can be measure. Some of the Measure we will be discussing to will refer to the worker, source materials, and environment. The worker if exposed can experience minor to fatal illness or injury this is dependent exposure number of hrs, days, minutes, or seconds. The source of the materials that workers is working with can quantity lbs, gallons, liters, Militres, parts per million (standard Measurement). Environment- pace, human behaviour, structural aspects, location, nature of work, equipment, and process. Many workplace will introduce Health Hazards an might not be aware: worker with Shingles or chickenpox to new chemical without thing what the impact would be on the workplace. This is unfortunate workplace can suffer significant losses if Health Hazards are not controlled.
These are important to remember about these hazards many of them are dose. Biological Hazards- can be found in Plant or Animal by-products. For example Plant-Poison Ivy or Animal-flu, salmonella, Viruses. (There are nurses or outdoor workers. Chemical Hazards- That is on the periodic table, actual state solid, liquid, or gas or transformed states. Can cause effects such as chemical burns to cancer impacts most bodily functions Physical Hazards- Will deal with light, noise, temperature, vibration, Radiation Ionized can liberate electron from atoms & molecules producing a net charge, this can cause significant biological damage (x-rays) or Non Ionized electromagnetic can’t completely remove an electron from an atom or a molecule (Solar-Rays) Eye site, hearing damage, frost bite or heat stroke, white fingers or nerve damage, Ergonomic Hazards-How human conforms to the work station. Awkward Body Position, Force Posture, Repetitive Motions, Forceful Movements. Is in most workplaces and can cause damage to
Occupational Health Services include: Evaluation of employees' ability to perform their assigned duties in a safe manner (via- pre-placement evaluation) Recognition of early symptoms and signs of work-related health effect and appropriate intervention (medical surveillance examination can reveal these) Provision of treatment and rehabilitation for occupational injuries & illnesses and non-occupational disorders that affect the work performance (work related injuries). Promotion and maintenance of employees' health (wellness) Evaluation of a person's ability to work in light of a chronic medical disorder (an independent medical examination is required Supervision of policies and programs related to worksite health and safety.
This might sounds awful. There is a predisposition of an individuals need to be considered. For example: A person of a certain height might not be able to work at a standard work station forcing this person to work in awkward position this will lead to musculoskeletal problems overtime that worker at this work station. Psychology & sociology has a lot to do with pre-existing environmental exposure in the future will play a role in mental health and the workplace. Always as yourself before hire: Does the task fit the worker or the worker fit the task.
Health Hazards can cause Health hazards can cause acute, chronic, and latten effects that can result in illness or injury. Occupational Hazards can cause anything from a burns-burnout- cancer-to death. This injuries or illnesses can be systemic, or synergistic. Blood & Circulatory System-Biological or chemical, Cardiovascular System-Biological or chemicals, Digestive System-Biological or chemical, Mental Health-psychoscocial Musculoskeletal-Ergonomics and Physical Nervous System-Physical, Renal-Urinary System-Biological and Chemicals, Reproductive System-Biological, Chemicals Physical, and Ergonomic, Respiratory System-Biological and Chemcials , Sensory System Physcial, Chemical or Biological Skin Diseases Physical, Chemical or Biological
Biological Release can have considerable impact on environment and species. It is critical if your are industries such as medical, education, farming, waste management and environment. Environmental services. These industries that have the standards are in place to ensure adequate programs to protect the workforce. Infectious disease, organisms and biogenic toxics, Biogenic allergens.
Very workplace has chemicals don’t be fooled there are chemicals in very workplace. Office (Cleaners)– Industrial (Fuel cell use and storage or gas storage) Chemcial’s can in the form of Gas, Vapours, Liquids, Dusts, Fumes, Mists Corrosion, Irritation, Allergic reactions, Asphyxiation, Cancer, Reproductive effect, Systemic poison.
Non-Ionizing and Ionizing raditiation Noise Vibrations Extremes of temperature Extreme of pressure
Ask yourself does the task Fit the Worker or the Worker Fit the Task. Things that you are going to want to consider when reviewing the workplace are: Work space General physical activity Lifting activity Work postures and movements Accident risk Job requirements and tasks Job restrictiveness or limitations Worker’s communication and personal contacts Decision-making Repetitiveness of the work Attentiveness
This psychosocial Hazards: Protecting your workers and providing a safe work environment free from violence & harassment and zero tolerance is important. Understanding behavioural traits and characteristics and providing tools and training for workers to cohesively work together is critical. (Team building) Having programs to assist workers with understanding nutrition, exercise, achieving balance lifestyle, is important to promote having Healthy workforce, healthy workforces tend to have abseentism and accidents. Having support for your staff if they are having challenges both professionally and personally to get there life back to balance is critical.
