Michelangelo was afflicted by an illness involving the small joints of his hands which may be interpreted today
as osteoarthritis.
Amazingly enough continued working up to six days before his death, right before he turned 89.
He continued creating masterpieces and didn’t stop hammering sculptures well into old age, despite the fact
that it was likely the hammering and chiseling that caused the osteoarthritis
Indeed, the continuous and intense work could have helped Michelangelo to keep the use of his hands for as
long as possible.

On connaît ses fresques célèbres de la chapelle Sixtine à Rome. On sait moins qu'elles ont été peut-être
peintes par des mains douloureuses.
Michel-Ange, l'un des plus grands artistes de la renaissance, souffrait en effet d'arthrose, notamment au
niveau du pouce. Une maladie qui a été probablement aggravée par son travail manuel et l'usage répété du
marteau et du burin.
Pourtant, malgré les douleurs provoquées par cette affection qui touche les articulations, il a peint jusqu'à 6
jours avant sa mort.
Il est intéressant de noter que le travail continue et intense pourrait avoir aidé le Maître à garder l'usage de ses
mains aussi longtemps que possible.
Michel-Ange, qui était aussi architecte et poète, a fait de l'auto-rééducation sans le savoir.
