Infinitive constructions
• Some verbs (especially model verbs – pouvoir,
vouloir, devoir and savoir) can be followed
immediately by an infinitive.
Je peux nager.
• Others are followed by either à or de:
J’ai décidé de faire mes devoirs.
J’ai commencé à apprendre l’espagnol.
• Sentences can include multiple verbs followed by
the appropriate prepositions, the first in the
appropriate tense and the rest as infinitives.
J’ai encouragé mon ami à arrêter de fumer.
Faire + infinitive
• This describes an action that is to be done by
someone or something else.
Il fait réparer son vélo.
• When FAIRE is used twice (to have something
done/made), the first is in the appropriate
tense and the second is the infinitive.
Nous avons fait faire ce travail.
Se faire + infinitive
• This means that the subject has something
done to/for himself/herself.
• Usually, for reflexive verbs, the past participle
agrees with the subject but it doesn’t apply to
SE FAIRE + infinitive.
Il s’est fait arrêter par la police.
Venir de + infinitive
This means that someone or something has just
done something.
Je viens d’arriver en France.
Pour/sans/avant de + infinitive
Use the infinitive after POUR (to/in order to),
SANS (without) and AVANT DE (before):
Je vais en ville pour faire du shopping.
On ne peut pas progresser sans faire du révision.
Avant de prendre mon diner, je vais regarder la
télé.
En train de + infinitive
This describes what is happening at the time of
speaking or writing.
Il est en train de devenir de footballeur.
