10. Technical textiles innovations to reduce global pollution
- Case of filtration fabrics for paper industry
Making paper is a technology based on the filtration of pulp to remove 100 m3 of
water for each tonne of paper produced.
All filtration process in paper industry is made thanks to woven filters made by
technical textile producers.

12. Technical textiles innovations to reduce global pollution
- Case of filtration fabrics for paper industry
To get an Eco label in paper industry it is needed to :
- Criteria 3 : Increase the use of recycled fibers
- Innovation 3 : Develop new fabrics and yarns highly resistant to contaminants and
stickies created by the use of recycled fibers.
Thanks to many innovations made by technical textile industry, paper makers can
apply for eco-labels and make more environment friendly products.

17. Technical textiles innovations to reduce global pollution
- Case of 3D woven based composites in aerospace
Use of composites in Commercial Transport Aircraft is continuously increasing

18. Technical textiles innovations to reduce global pollution
- Case of 3D woven based composites in aerospace
Environmental Benefits of 3D woven based composites
Decrease the total mass of aerospace equipments and reduce fuel
consumption. Boeing 787 consumes 20% less fuel compared to other
airplanes of its category.
Reduce the energy needed to produce the airplane. Composites
manufacturing technologies versus metallic based technology
Reduce the amount of scrapped materials to make pieces in the case of
woven composites compared to metallic pieces which needs to be tooled.
Reduce the consumption of spare parts due to higher lifetime and higher wear
resistance.

19. Innovation Efforts of technical textile producers to obtain Eco labels
Technical textile industry has also its own ambitions to obtain Eco-
labels. Many development projects are initiated in this area:
- Develop new yarns using recyclable materials.
- Introduce new resins based on bio materials or with better
recyclability (at least better than Epoxy for composites).
- Increase the life time of fabrics and composites.
- Reduce the waste issued by the process by the introduction of new
control technology to reduce scrapping.

20. Conclusions
Obtaining Eco-labels is a vital issue for all industries today to meet
customer and society attempts
This trend is a real innovation motor for technical textiles sector:
- To introduce and to develop new technologies to get its own Eco labels
- To develop new products to help customers to obtain their own Eco
labels and to make environment friendly products.
- Technical textiles sector shows how Eco labeling is a real motor for
modern economies to create more values and to ensure sustainable
development
