Le Parc des Buttes Chaumont d'une superficie de 24 700 m² a été construit sur des carrières d'extraction de gypse
et de pierres meulières à l'initiative de Napoléon III
L'Etat acquit le terrain en 1863 et les premiers coups de pioche furent donnés en 1864.
Trois ans furent nécessaires pour réaliser les travaux titanesques de terrassement
et créer les aménagements paysagers qui agrémentent le parc.
Le parc fut inauguré le 1er avril 1867, en même temps que l'Exposition
Universelle du Champ de Mars.
Son entrée principale est située place Armand Carrel
en face de la mairie de 19e arrondissement.
Assisté du jardinier Barillet- Deschamps, de l'architecte Gabriel Davioud,
et de l'ingénieur Belgrand, Jean Charles Alphand métamorphosa les anciennes carrières,
creusant un lac et une grotte ornée de fausses stalactites, faisant jaillir des cascades et des ruisseaux.
Le parc prit alors le nom de la butte, " Chaumont " venant, selon toute hypothèse,
de la contraction des mots " chauve " (calvus en latin) et " mont " (mons en latin).
Le parc comporte plusieurs statues: Buste de Clovis Hugues - L'Égalitaire
- Pan de Fanis Sakellariou, d'autres en bronze ont disparues durant
l'occupation en 1941/1942 fondues pour récupérer les métaux (vois cartes postales de 1900)

The Buttes Chaumont park with an area of 24,700 square meters
was built on rock quarry gypsum and grindstones at the initiative of Napoleon III
The state purchased the land in 1863 and the first shots were given pick in 1864.
Three years were necessary to achieve the titanic work of excavation
and create landscaping that grace the park.
The park was inaugurated on 1 April 1867, together with
the Universal Exposition of Champ de Mars .
Its main entrance is up Armand Carrel in front of City Hall 19th arrondissement.
Attended the gardener barrel-Deschamps, the architect Gabriel Davioud
, and the engineer Belgrand, Jean Charles Alphand morphed the old quarries
