1. There was once a hotel which had a
very generous manager. No beggar
was ever turned away, and the
manager gave all he could to the
needy. The strange thing was that
the more he gave away, the richer
the hotel seemed to become.

La légende raconte qu'il était une fois
une hôtel dont l'directeur était très
généreux. Jamais il ne renvoyait un
mendiant, et il donnait toujours tout
ce qu'il pouvait aux nécessiteux. Or,
plus il donnait, plus l'hôtel devenait
riche.

2. When the old manager died, he was replaced
by a new one with exactly the opposite
nature—he was mean and stingy.
One day an elderly man arrived at the hotel,
saying that he had stayed there years before
and was seeking shelter again. The manager
said that the hotel could no longer afford its
former hospitality.
Mais le vieil directeur vint à mourir. Son
successeur avait un caractère tout à fait
opposé: il était mesquin et avare.
Un jour, un vieillard vint à la porte du hôtel
demandant l'asile pour la nuit. Il expliqua que
l'hôtel l'avait déjà hébergé. L'directeur refusa
de lui donner le gîte, prétextant que l'hôtel ne
pouvait plus se permettre son hospitalité
passée.

3. “Ah well,” said the stranger, “I think that is
because you turned a man away from your hotel.”
“I don’t think we ever did that,” said the puzzled
manager.
“Oh yes,” was the reply. “And he had a twin. The
one you turned away was called ‘Give’ and his
twin was ‘It shall be given unto you.’ You turned
away ‘Give,’ so his brother decided to go as
well.”
— Vous savez, répondit l'étranger, je crois
bien que c'est parce que vous avez
renvoyé deux hommes du hôtel.
— Je ne me souviens pas d'un tel incident,
répondit l'directeur, soudain perplexe.
— Oh, mais moi, je m'en souviens très
bien, répliqua l'étranger, même que c'était
des frères jumeaux! Le premier s'appelait
Donnez, et le second Et il vous sera donné!
Quand vous avez renvoyé Donnez, son
frère l'a suivi.
