La Saint-Patrick est la fête nationale des Irlandais… Elle se fête le 17 mars… Patrick est le saint patron de l ’ Irlande… Patrick est le fils d ’ un fonctionnaire de la Grande-Bretagne romaine… Il serait né vers 385 en Ecosse ou au pays de Galle…(Ici, notons que les historiens ne s ’ entendent pas sur son pays d ’ origine).

Alors que Patrick est tout jeune homme, il fut enlevé par des pirates écossais… Au bout de six années d ’ esclavagisme, il réussit à s ’ échapper et retourna chez lui… A l ’ âge de 20 ans, il devient chrétien et fait un rêve où Dieu lui demande de retourner en Irlande… Il devient prêtre et passe sa vie à convertir les païens…

7. La fête de la Saint –Patrick est célébrée dans plusieurs pays dont l ’ Irlande, bien sûr, mais aussi aux Etats-Unis et le Canada où de nombreux Irlandais ont émigré au 19ième siècle, suite à la Grande Famine…

9. Étrangement, la première fête de la Saint-Patrick n ’ a pas eu lieu en Irlande, mais à Boston aux Etats-Unis, en 1737… L ’ emblème de la Saint-Patrick est le trèfle vert… La légende veut que Saint-Patrick réussi à chasser tous les serpents de l ’ Irlande…

11. En Irlande, le 17 mars, est un jour férié. Les Irlandais portent du vert, qui est la couleur de l ’ Irlande…Elle est aussi associé au printemps… Ils assistent aux défilés de la Saint-Patrick et ils consomment des plats irlandais… Bien sûr, beaucoup de fêtards boivent des boissons irlandaises… Certains boivent même de la bière colorée verte…

La fête de la Saint-Patrick compte de nombreux symboles, dont celui du Leprechauns; un petit bonhomme vert de 1 pied avec la barbe et les cheveux roux, et qui porte un chapeau haute forme et des chaussures à boucle… Petit elfe avare, il détient un trésor de pièces d ’ or… Si vous découvrez son trésor au pied d ’ un arc-en-ciel, il doit vous accorder 3 vœux… Mais attention! Il est très rusé et malicieux…

Vœux de la Saint-Patrick « Puissiez-vous avoir une maison contre le vent, Un toit contre la pluie, L ’ amour d ’ une famille unie, Puissiez-vous toujours être entourés de gens joyeux et d ’ éclats de rire de tous ceux que vous aimez, Puissiez-vous avoir tout ce que votre cœur désire»… Patrick meurt le 17 mars 461…
