Dear President Feyzioǧlu,
I would like to thank you for your letter of 28 February 2014, which I have carefully
considered with the CCBE Presidency and the chairs of the PECO Committee.
We understand your distress and concerns in light of the current developments in Turkey,
and we are willing to provide assistance to your Bar. Before doing so, however, we would
like to inform you that it is not our usual policy to go beyond our focus of the legal
profession, but we do react when an extenuating situation affects the legal profession itself.
As you know, the CCBE has been closely following the recent proceedings against lawyers in
Turkey and has made its views very clear on these cases. We will continue to do so in the
future.
We believe that it would be useful if you could meet with us in order to discuss these
matters in more detail, including the type of assistance that the CCBE can provide.
We therefore suggest that a meeting be arranged on the occasion of the CCBE Standing
Committee meeting (4 April 2014, Brussels) or the CCBE Plenary Session (16-17 May 2014,
Verona).
I look forward to hearing from you on this matter.
