“To me, a successful skincare brand should be able to have
a positive effect on your self-esteem and mood,” says Rob
Calcraft, co-founder of luxury natural skincare brand REN.
Rather a tall order perhaps, but the 47-year-old is passionate
about his burgeoning business which celebrates its 11th
anniversary this year.
With products stocked in upmarket department stores
Selfridges and Liberty and a number of independent retailers,
as well as luxury hotels around the world, REN has managed
to become a serious player in a decade through its
commitment to its “clean stamp” (ren means “clean” in
Swedish) using natural, chemical-free colours and fragrances.
The company was founded by Calcraft and his partner
Antony Buck in September 2000 after Buck’s wife suffered a
severe reaction to traditional beauty and skincare products
while she was pregnant. An apparent lack of alternatives
prompted the pair to start thinking how they could remedy
the situation. With a background in beauty branding, Calcraft
could see there was a lucrative gap in the market.
A new, more natural approach to skincare was required.
But the pair quickly discovered the reason there were so few
natural skin care brands was because of the problems
inherent in manufacturing them, such as finding alternatives
to the distinctly non-natural parabens which are used in
beauty products as preservatives.
“Coming up with the idea for REN was the easy part,”
Calcraft admits. “Finding someone to produce it for us was
far more difficult, but we never considered giving up. After a
year of searching, eventually we found a cosmetic
pharmacologist who convinced us she could create the
products naturally, the way we wanted them.”
The next step was to create special airtight containers
and packaging that ensured their products did not go off
rapidly. Together they sourced alternative natural
ingredients such as Moroccan rose otto oil and neroli flower
water, and embarked on two years of clinically testing the
individual ingredients, with no testing on animals, before
the first range of products was launched.
A decade ago Rob Calcraft realised a dearth of all-natural
skincare was something he wanted to change. Now his
chemical-free products grace the shelves of the big stores and
luxury hotels around the world, finds Philippa Brangam

partie facile, admet Calcraft.

Calcraft has a very hands-on approach to his company
with a close-knit team of around 35 people in London
and New York. “I have five key principles I consider when
running REN: the right attitude, the right ingredients and
science, and the right product experience for the
customer and finally, environmental awareness.”
REN tries to keep its packaging to a minimum and
donates a percentage of its profits to supporting charitable
causes such as Bliss (for premature babies), Great Ormond
Street Hospital, the Tibet Relief Fund and Crisis.
The company continues to expand its product range,
having recently launched its new Radiance range, which
includes a cleanser, resurfacer and serum designed to
create smooth and glowing skin for summer.
Of his aspirations for the future, Calcraft says, “As
parents, we want REN to grow up to be a decent brand
citizen that is trusted, respected and that people would
be happy to have in their bathrooms.”
