Kupka's abstract works arose from a base of realism and heavy symbolism (under the viennese influence), but later evolved into pure abstract art.

Edward Hopper was an American realist painter born in 1882. He studied art in New York and Paris and is known for his paintings of mundane scenes depicting solitude and urban alienation. Some of his most famous works include Nighthawks, Automat, and Morning Sun. Hopper often portrayed solitary figures, usually women, in interior scenes with stark lighting coming through windows. His paintings conveyed a sense of psychological unease and examined themes of voyeurism and isolation in modern American life. Hopper was influential on filmmakers like Hitchcock and Scott and continued painting up until his death in 1967.
Edward Hopper was an American realist painter and printmaker. He is known for his oil paintings of mundane intermediate American scenes. Some of his most famous paintings include Nighthawks, Early Sunday Morning, House by the Railroad, and Room in Brooklyn. Hopper believed in the power of imagination to create something new out of everyday things. He sought to capture sunlight illuminating the side of a house in his paintings.

The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive function. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against mental illness and improve symptoms.
This document discusses how political cartoons can provide useful insights into past attitudes and perspectives. It explains that cartoons use techniques like exaggeration, symbolism, labeling, analogy, and irony to convey persuasive messages. It then provides examples of how each technique is used, such as exaggerating physical characteristics to demean authority figures or using symbols to represent larger concepts. The document advocates analyzing cartoons by considering their origin, context, elements, message, purpose, point of view, and reliability.
This document provides a guide for writing an art critique using the Feldman Method in 4 steps:
1. Describe objective elements of the artwork such as objects, colors, materials without interpretation.
2. Analyze formal relationships between elements like color, shape, composition through similarities, differences and connections.
3. Interpret potential meanings of the artwork by forming a hypothesis supported by evidence from the description and analysis.
4. Make a judgment of the artwork's worth based on craftsmanship, technique, ability to relate elements and elicit a response from the viewer.
The document discusses the process of art criticism and analysis. It outlines Edmund Feldman's 4-step technique for analyzing art: description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment. It focuses on the analysis step, explaining that analysis involves asking "why" about various elements of the artwork based on internal evidence from the artwork itself and external evidence from context about the artist and time period. The document provides examples of analyzing Pablo Picasso's painting "Weeping Woman" using both internal and external evidence. It encourages analyzing art by carefully describing the artwork and asking questions.
The document provides an overview of how to analyze and interpret artworks through a four step process: description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment. It discusses how art historical research helps provide context and external evidence to analyze what cannot be gleaned just from looking at the artwork. Interpretation involves uncovering what the artwork may mean based on description and analysis, though there are no definitive answers as artworks can mean different things to different people. The document also cautions that the artist's intention is not always a fixed idea and artworks are often meant to provoke thought rather than state a single meaning.
The document provides a 4-step process for discussing and critiquing artwork: 1) Describe the key details of the artwork, 2) Analyze the use of visual elements and principles of design, 3) Interpret what the artist was trying to convey, and 4) Make a judgment on the success and importance of the artwork. Examples are given for each step, including describing the objects in an artwork, analyzing its use of balance and contrast, interpreting potential symbols, and judging whether you would display it. The document aims to outline a thorough yet structured process for critically examining visual art.
This document lists 10 paintings by American realist painter Edward Hopper from 1926 to 1961, including interiors with solitary figures such as "Eleven a.m." from 1926, "The barber shop" from 1931, and "Room in brooklyn" from 1932, as well as cityscapes like "Morning in the city" from 1944 and "Summer in the city" from 1949, along with later works featuring solitary figures in urban or motel settings.
This document provides a glossary of basic art vocabulary terms. It defines terms like abstract art, acrylic paint, analog colors, architecture, and more. The glossary is arranged alphabetically and provides concise definitions for over 100 common art terms.
The document provides guidance on describing and analyzing artworks. It outlines Edmund Feldman's 4-step technique for art criticism: description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment. Description involves objectively noting details like subject, colors, shapes without analysis. Analysis examines relationships within the description. Interpretation derives meaning based on description and analysis. Judgment evaluates the work based on the previous steps. The document emphasizes the importance of thorough description before analyzing, interpreting, or judging a work of art. It offers examples of descriptive techniques and perspectives to help effectively communicate an artwork in writing.
Where does the idea of judging art come fromcharlottefrost
The document discusses the history and development of art criticism. It outlines Edmund Feldman's 4-step technique for analyzing art from the 1970s, which includes description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment. The document then focuses on the concept of judgment in art criticism. It explores the philosophical roots of aesthetics and how philosophers like Hume and Kant debated the nature of taste and beauty. The document also discusses how criteria for evaluating art have changed over time as styles evolved. In the end, it questions whether modern rating systems can truly be considered art criticism.
Edward Hopper (1882-1967) was an American realist painter born in Nyack, New York. He studied commercial illustration and painting in New York. Hopper spent time studying in Paris but always returned to New York City, where he found inspiration in everyday urban and rural scenes. Hopper's paintings depicted solitary or anonymous figures in mundane settings, conveying a sense of alienation. He gained success in the 1920s and was able to devote himself fully to painting. Hopper is now regarded as an important American realist who captured the loneliness and boredom of modern life.

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (later known as the Pre-Raphaelites) was a group of English painters, poets, and art critics, founded in 1848 by William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The three founders were joined by William Michael Rossetti, James Collinson, Frederic George Stephens and Thomas Woolner to form the seven-member "brotherhood". Their principles were shared by other artists, like Edward Burne-Jones, and they influenced many painters throughout their century : John Collier, John William Waterhouse and even James McNeill Whistler, who pushed the pre raphaelite art in its very lasts conclusions.
