Higher education in France is comprised of three main types of institutions: universities, grandes écoles, and specialist schools. Universities are public and open to all, offering a wide range of programs over various lengths of study. The grandes écoles are more selective and specialized. Specialist schools focus on specific areas. Standardization across Europe is working to make higher education more cohesive, with common structures like the three-year bachelor's degree and two-year master's degree. Studying in France involves applying directly to universities or grandes écoles.
