EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
The French educational system is renowned for its program in early childhood education, the Maternelle.
At the age of 2 or 3, in a warm and nurturing environment, children begin to learn and socialize while
acquiring the building blocks needed for future academic success in French and in English. The approach
is interdisciplinary and project oriented using an overall theme in which the various disciplines such as logical
thinking, mathematics, communication, oral and written skills, relation of the body in space through physical
education are brought together in a way that is both stimulating and fun. Children are encouraged to discover
and explore in a structured, yet open atmosphere that facilitates and inspires learning at this young age.

Le système scolaire français est réputé pour sa structure dédiée à la petite enfance, c’est–à–dire
sa Maternelle. Dès l’âge de 2 ou 3 ans, les enfants sont accueillis dans un cadre chaleureux qui leur permet de
s’épanouir, d’apprendre à vivre ensemble et d’acquérir les apprentissages fondamentaux qui leur
permettront de réussir plus tard aussi bien en français qu’en anglais. La pédagogie s’organise autour
de l’acquisition de compétences fondamentales transmises au travers de chaque discipline telles que
la logique, les mathématiques, la communication verbale et écrite, la motricité. De façon structurée
mais ouverte, les enfants sont encouragés à découvrir et à explorer les notions abordées, afin d’initier et
de faciliter leurs apprentissages dès le plus jeune âge. Tout commence à la maternelle!

6. As documented in numerous studies, bilingual education enhances cognitive
development including the ability for abstraction, conceptualization and
problem solving. Bilingual children are better at math, focus and adapt better,
and receive higher scores on standardized tests. At Rochambeau, bilingual
education begins as early as 3 years old and is an integral part of the curriculum
at all grade levels.
In addition bilingual children have an easier time learning additional languages.
As early as 3rd grade, students can begin studying a third language. By
middle school, all students study a third language (Spanish, German, Arabic)
and in addition can choose Latin as an elective. Some students even choose
to study a fourth language.
Rochambeau is accredited by the French Ministry of Education and recognized
by the Department of Education of the State of Maryland.

The academic quality of the Rochambeau program is such that students obtain their US high
school diplomas at the end of 11th grade and their French Baccalauréat at the end of 12th
grade. Prepared for success beyond high school, our graduates pursue their higher education
studies in the United States, Canada, the U.K., France and international universities around the
globe. In fact, most of our students apply to university in more than one country, and Rochambeau
graduates may receive up to a full year of college credit.

Comme le démontrent de nombreuses études, une éducation bilingue favorise le développement cognitif
et l’accès aux notions abstraites, à la conceptualisation et à la résolution de problèmes. Les enfants
bilingues sont plus performants en mathématiques, s’adaptent et se concentrent plus facilement,
obtiennent de meilleurs résultats aux standardized tests. A Rochambeau, l’éducation bilingue débute dès
l’âge de 2 ou 3 ans et se poursuit à tous les niveaux.
Les enfants bilingues sont avantagés quand ils apprennent d’autres langues. Dès le CE2 la possibilité leur
est offerte d’apprendre une troisième langue. Arrivés au collège, ils apprendront tous une troisième langue
(espagnol, allemand, arabe) et pourront aussi s’initier au latin. Certains élèves peuvent même faire le choix
d’une quatrième langue.

Une préparation rigoureuse
à l’entrée en université
La richesse du programme permet aux élèves de Rochambeau d’obtenir le High School Diploma dès la
fin de la Première (accréditation du Department of Education de l’État du Maryland), avant de passer le
baccalauréat français en fin de terminale. Nos élèves accèdent sans difficulté à l’enseignement supérieur
aux Etats-Unis, au Canada, au Royaume Uni ou en France, ainsi que dans de nombreuses universités
du monde entier. La majorité de nos élèves postule à plusieurs universités et obtient jusqu’à une année
d’équivalence dans les universités américaines.

10. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Our academic program is based on the French national curriculum with a strong emphasis on languages.
It is a comprehensive, world recognized educational program organized in cycles from Maternelle to 12th
grade that follows a core of classes including languages, the sciences, math, the arts, music, technology,
history (including US and French history), geography and philosophy. Students taking the OIB option (Option
Internationale du Baccalauréat) successfully demonstrate the strength of this bilingual program, mastering
both English and French as native speakers and writers.

With over 70 nationalities, Rochambeau is a truly multicultural and diverse community, one in which
students no matter their backgrounds can find their place. Classrooms are full of lively discussion and
students demonstrate the ability to understand the world from many different perspectives.
Rochambeau is part of the AEFE (Agency for French Education Overseas), a network of nearly 500 schools
in 130 countries worldwide. Students within the network can move with ease from Washington DC to San
Francisco, from Singapore to London, and enjoy the same quality of education.

En tant qu’établissement homologué par le Ministère de l’Education Nationale, notre
enseignement est conforme aux programmes et orientations du Ministère, et l’accent
est notamment mis sur les langues.
C’est un cursus complet et équilibré, reconnu dans le monde entier, qui s’articule en
cycles de la Maternelle à la Terminale et inclut des disciplines fondamentales comme
les langues, les sciences, les mathématiques, les arts plastiques, la musique, la
technologie, l’histoire (américaine et française), la géographie et la philosophie. Les
élèves qui font le choix de l’Option Internationale du Baccalauréat attestent de
la pertinence de ce programme bilingue par leur maîtrise égale du français et de
l’anglais.

turelle où chaque élève trouve sa place quel que soit son parcours antérieur. Lors des
