Spirit and Goals of the Workshop
-> A pro-active and service-oriented workshop,
-> Experiences, exchanges and discussions.
1.Create and develop new and innovative services,
2.Attract the public, one of the main trends now in libraries and information
services.
The sub-topics of the workshop will be: marketing, project management, new
models, evaluation, innovative staff…

Planning of the Workshop
•1st
hour: Presentation of the participants, the workshop, the topic and sub-
topics. Explanations of what is innovation? What is a service-oriented library?
What is project management?
•2d hour: Overview of new services in libraries such as: virtual reference
services; open archives and access; how to propose digital contents; social
networks; business intelligence services…
•3d hour: 3 or 4 working groups choosing a service or a product to
implement: the processing, the creation and the development.
•4th
hour: reports from the groups, synthesis and conclusion.

PART 1. Explanations of what is innovation? What is a service-oriented library? What is project
management?
-> what is innovation?
•To be called an innovation, an idea must be replicable at an economical cost and
must satisfy a specific need. Innovation involves deliberate application of information,
imagination and initiative in deriving greater or different values from resources and
includes all processes by which new ideas are generated and converted into useful
products.
Innovations are divided into two broad categories:
– Evolutionary innovations (continuous or dynamic evolutionary innovation)
that are brought about by many incremental advances in technology or
processes;
– Revolutionary innovations (also called discontinuous innovations) which are
often disruptive and new.

is project management?
-> what is a service-oriented library?
A service is a discrete piece of functionality, manifested in the form of a technical
implementation, and deployed for use, usually on a network (e.g., as a Web service, a
user friendly Catalogue).
Looking ahead, there is every indication that more and more library processes and
workflows will take the form of automated systems built by combining a variety of
services: a platform, a Mooc, a virtual reference service…

PART 1. Explanations of what is innovation? What is a service-oriented library? What is
project management?
-> what is project management?
A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or
result.
Project management, then, is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to
project activities to meet the project requirements. Project management processes fall
into five groups:
•Initiating
•Planning
•Executing
•Monitoring and Controlling
•Closing

PART 2. Overview of new services in libraries
The Library Space:
-Offer a (re)new library space : the library as a Third Place E.g. see
The Rolex Learning Center in CH or the DOK Library in Delft and Market the
Library space;
-Help create a living space and programme to facilitate collaboration and
knowledge exchange, e.g. “Camp” for small conferences or informal
encounters and meetings or seminars or Warwick’s Wolfson’s
Research Exchange.
-Use the library space for more activities such as small exhibitions related to
the Institution events

Print versus Digital
-Simplify access to the physical collection
-Transition to increased digital access to books
-Build a “digital kiosk” gathering different kinds of resources (press and
magazines; e-books; digitised collections of the library; Ask a Librarian)
focused on the topics
-Market digital resources
-Carry out a benchmarking study on this topic Print versus Digital

Reference service
-Analyse Library Reference services:
- How relevant is it to have a physical reference desk?
- Ask users their views
- Is there a possibility to develop a virtual reference desk?
- The virtual reference desk could be implement on a platform or on a catalogue ?

Information Literacy
-Is the public aware of the resources and services available to them?
-Create more short workshops and trainings that address current public, or
young adults or seniors
-Provide some guides of the library resources: the catalogue, the databases,
ebooks, ejournals, the Library pages on the website…

- Getting value out of library services
- In general, there is a lack of awareness of Library services;
- Regularly Inform your public about your services ;
- Review the Library website and make its content more dynamic as
seen at Sciences Po, highlight certain special collections as seen on
EUI’s site and make it more graphically appealing.

Innovative Services in Libraries and Information Services Spirit and Goals of the Workshop -> A pro-active and service-oriented workshop, -> Experiences, exchanges and discussions. 1.Create and develop new and innovative services, 2.Attract the public, one of the main trends now in libraries and information services.   • 3. Innovative Services in Libraries and Information Services Planning of the Workshop •1st hour: Presentation of the participants, the workshop, the topic and sub- topics. Explanations of what is innovation? What is a service-oriented library? What is project management? •2d hour: Overview of new services in libraries such as: virtual reference services; open archives and access; how to propose digital contents; social networks; business intelligence services… •3d hour: 3 or 4 working groups choosing a service or a product to implement: the processing, the creation and the development. •4th hour: reports from the groups, synthesis and conclusion. What is project management? -> what is innovation? •To be called an innovation, an idea must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need. Innovation involves deliberate application of information, imagination and initiative in deriving greater or different values from resources and includes all processes by which new ideas are generated and converted into useful products. Innovations are divided into two broad categories: – Evolutionary innovations (continuous or dynamic evolutionary innovation) that are brought about by many incremental advances in technology or processes; – Revolutionary innovations (also called discontinuous innovations) which are often disruptive and new. What is project management? -> what is a service-oriented library? A service is a discrete piece of functionality, manifested in the form of a technical implementation, and deployed for use, usually on a network (e.g., as a Web service, a user friendly Catalogue). Looking ahead, there is every indication that more and more library processes and workflows will take the form of automated systems built by combining a variety of services: a platform, a Mooc, a virtual reference service… Crimea 2015 - Workshop - cop JP Accart 5

What is project management? -> what is project management? A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result. Project management, then, is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. Overview of new services in libraries The Library Space: -Offer a (re)new library space : the library as a Third Place E.g. see The Rolex Learning Center in CH or the DOK Library in Delft and Market the Library space; -Help create a living space and programme to facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange, e.g. “Camp” for small conferences or informal encounters and meetings or seminars or Warwick’s Wolfson’s Research Exchange. -Use the library space for more activities such as small exhibitions related to the Institution events Crimea 2015 - Workshop - cop JP Accart 7
