This whitepaper discusses a quality testing protocol conducted by C&A Tool to demonstrate that additive manufacturing (AM) using direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) can produce titanium parts that meet or exceed industry standards for mechanical properties and density. The protocol evaluated how properties were affected by critical quality variables like laser power, build location, orientation, and heat treatment. Results showed properties did not vary significantly based on these factors and exceeded standards, providing evidence that DMLS can reliably produce high quality, repeatable titanium parts for industries like medical and aerospace.
This document discusses the design of support structures for additive manufacturing of metal parts. It begins by explaining how designers try to avoid supports, but they are sometimes necessary. The key is to design supports that are easy to remove, strong enough to hold the part, minimize build time, and save on materials. The rest of the document uses a combustion chamber part to illustrate how to optimize the design of supports, such as adding a support block with an internal hexagon to aid removal. Process parameters are also adjusted to improve support performance and part buildability.

Compte-rendu :
Conclusion

chocs. Un support de roue léger
permet ainsi à la voiture d’avoir
une meilleure tenue sur la piste –
point crucial pour des tours
rapides et une course en toute
sécurité. En conséquence, les
constructeurs doivent faire face
à la tâche délicate de trouver
l’équilibre parfait entre poids et
rigidité. Les précédentes tech
nologies de production offraient
à l’écurie de Stuttgart trop peu
de marge de manœuvre dans la
recherche de l’équilibre parfait.
« Le support de roue que nous
utilisions depuis ces dernières
années avait déjà atteint un bon
rapport poids-rigidité, mais nous
n’étions pas certains de pouvoir
encore l’améliorer », explique
Yannick Löw de Rennteam Uni
Stuttgart.
« Nous produisions la pièce en
utilisant le procédé classique de
moulage de précision. Ceci nous
limitait bien sûr dans la liberté de
forme, ce qui signifiait que nous
n’allions pas pouvoir atteindre le
plein potentiel de la pièce. Même
à cette époque, nous avions
décidé que pour la saison 2012,
nous devrions rechercher une
méthode de fabrication nouvelle
et innovante pour l’articulation
de l’essieu de direction. Il n’a pas
fallu longtemps à l’équipe pour
choisir le chemin à prendre : la
technologie EOS. »
Solution
Dès la phase de conception, les
ingénieurs ont utilisé le logiciel
CAO des partenaires d’EOS,
Within Technologies Ltd. Il s’agit
d’une jeune entreprise, dont les
programmeurs écrivent leurs
logiciels spécialement pour le
procédé de Fabrication Additive.
Le programme rend possible
l’optimisation de microstructures
en strates de densités variables
basés sur des exemples tirés de
la nature. Grâce à cet outil, les
fabricants ont été capables de
faire parfaitement correspondre
la pièce aux exigences structu-
relles. Ils ont ainsi pu donner
précisément à l’articulation les
propriétés physiques requises –
légèreté et rigidité.
« Par le procédé simplifié appelé
impression 3D, notre machine
agglomère couche par couche de
la poudre de métal grâce à un
laser pour obtenir la pièce requise »,
explique Nikolai Zaepernick,
directeur du développement
d’affaires dans le secteur auto-
mobile chez EOS. « L’équipe
gagnante de Stuttgart a choisi le
logiciel de notre partenaire
Within pour la construction de
leur modèle CAO parce qu’il était
le plus adapté à la pièce et à son
utilité. Les informations concer-
nant la fabrication de la pièce ont
été fournies à la machine de
frittage laser métal par notre
logiciel universel, qui a pour ainsi
dire traduit les données du
modèle CAO existant. Le résultat
était incroyable et a montré
combien les jeunes ingénieurs
maitrisaient déjà bien leur sujet ».
Une fois que l’équipe a conçu
l’articulation de l’essieu de
direction, la production des
premiers composants fut lancée
de suite. Le fait que le temps de
développement et de fabrication
d’un produit soient réduits par
rapport au processus précédent
comptait beaucoup pour l’équipe.
Le gain de temps se doit à un
certain nombre de facteurs. L’une
d’elle est qu’avec la Fabrication
Additive il n’est plus nécessaire
de fabriquer des modèles ou des
empreintes de moulage. De plus,
le processus est plus précis dans
son ensemble, de la conception
à la fabrication, ce qui signifie
qu’un traitement ou une finition
postéreurs ne sont souvent pas
nécessaires. Dans le cas présent,
les constructeurs de Stuttgart ont
atteint une qualité de production
élevée dans un laps de temps très
court, si bien que la pièce était
immédiatement utilisable pour la
course.
Stuttgart. La liberté de con-
ception offerte par la technolo-
gie du frittage laser métal
d’EOS a joué un rôle clé dans ce
succès. »

vitesse par tour plus rapide et
une moindre consommation de
carburant. La meilleure preuve en
est le résultat de l’équipe dans
la course finale : une victoire
à Hockenheim qui a couronné
l’écurie de Stuttgart comme
champion 2012 du championnat
Formula Student Germany.
« Nous sommes ravis d’avoir été
capables d’apporter le titre de
Formula Student Germany à
l’équipe de Stuttgart. La liberté
de conception offerte par la
technologie du frittage laser
métal d’EOS a joué un rôle impor-
tant dans ce succès », selon Löw.
Toutes les personnes impliquées
ont montré avec cette victoire que
la profession d’ingénieur peut être
à la fois amusante et passionnante.
Et l’attrait des nouvelles techno-
logies, telle que la Fabrication
Additive, peut y jouer un rôle,
inspirant de plus en plus de
jeunes à se lancer dans une
carrière d’ingénieur.
