The 2009 Traffic Safety Culture Index Survey was conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety to investigate the public's traffic safety knowledge, attitudes, behaviors and experiences. The survey was a random telephone sample of over 2,500 US residents ages 16 and older conducted between April and May 2009. Key results found that the majority of drivers do not feel safer than 5 years ago, with distracted driving such as cell phone use being a major reason. The survey also found high percentages of drivers admitting to talking or texting on cell phones while driving. The AAA Foundation will use the survey results to guide traffic safety research, education and policy.

The AAA Foundation conducted two surveys to study cell phone use while driving. The surveys found that over half of drivers admit to talking on a cell phone while driving at least occasionally, with 16-17% doing so regularly. Younger drivers aged 25-34 reported the highest rates of cell phone use while driving. Both surveys also found that around 15% of drivers admit to reading or sending text messages while driving occasionally, and 3% do so regularly, with young drivers aged 18-24 being most likely to text and drive. However, most drivers believe that using hands-free phones is safer despite studies finding no safety difference between hands-free and hand-held phone use.

no secret that digital innovations have drastically changed how we live
our daily lives. Online and mobile technologies have altered how we
communicate with our families, friends, colleagues and clients. But
increasingly, these changes are impacting one of our most basic and
personal daily rituals eating.
Photo du Caribou
culture is nothing new. But around the globe, there has been a
recent explosion in popularity of personal food blogs, food photography
apps like Foodspotting and Food Reporter, online restaurant reviews and
food forums such as Yelp, Chow and others. These are influencing how
many of us think about food, talk about food, and....well, how we actually

ÈRE
For example, many online food enthusiasts photograph a meal ordered in a restaurant, and then post
photos and reviews online. Others recount in vivid detail their latest food creations, recipes and photos
on personal food blogs. Still others communicate their food and restaurant choices by on
Foursquare and other location-based services.
GRISE
But what does this really mean? When choosing to broadcast our daily food choices via the online
world, some experts think this may be changing the food choices we make in real life, or our interaction
with the food we eat.
Theories abound: perhaps a public form of consumption, or a type of online voyeurism where others
can gain experience through your actions. Perhaps it creates an offline connection with your online
network, or builds an information resource that can be shared with enthusiasts who share your passion.
Or maybe just trying to snag a spot as the next big food television host!
Whatever it may be, it seems apparent that food has a special space in the digital realm.
What do you think? Would you change what or how you ate if you shared your meals with your online
network? Would this add to, or subtract from, the sensory-driven, real-life experience on the plate in front
of you? Is it too personal, or an important facet of your digital profile?
