Quelles tendancesepour 2010 ?

Q

What trends for post 2010 lingerie?
What has feminine lingerie in store for us over the next years? What shapes, fabrics,
colours and uses will have the place of honour? Two international style forecasters
reveal tomorrow’s lingerie trends through their spokespersons, Pascale Briandan,
lingerie designer at Carlin International, and Florence Peyrichou, lingerie-style
coordinator at Nelly Rodi.

Créations Lingerie: So-called “organic” lingerie is increasingly
appearing in collections, do you
think that it will be a major
trend for the coming years?
Pascale Briand: “Green” products in lingerie do not have the
same implications as in food and
health: the benefit of the product is
not very obvious in lingerie. We could,
admittedly, try and recycle synthetic fabrics. As for organic fabrics, it is difficult
to use them in lingerie since they are not
very flattering and most certainly too
basic. It is important that so-called “eco-friendly” lingerie is not a punishment for customers and that it offers a choice of articles that
please in attractive fabrics. I therefore think that the trend over the
next years is more likely to be “ethical” than “green” and mainly in
the manufacturing process. Reducing the carbon footprint and combating relocation are ways of achieving this goal of ethical production, whereas relocation goes against it. It is true that some brands
have launched out into green production but eco-friendly products
in lingerie are developing mainly thanks to strong personalities, such
as Stella McCartney who created her first organic range in 2008
(organic cotton, silk-embroidered panties) and small designers. Jours
après Lunes proposes anti-bacterial and organic products for its
mother-daughter collections; and the Anilina brand proposes products for expectant mothers in organic cotton. With these brands we

can see that the eco-friendly message has got through. “Ecofriendly” lingerie must therefore comply with certain
ethics and have a strong, legitimate message.
Florence Peyrichou: “Organic” is a new trend that is developing among lingerie brands, mainly in night lingerie, although now also in corsetry. The brands are
seeking to use natural fibres for their “green”, comfortable side, such as beech fibres, bamboo and
even silk. The English brand, Poule de Luxe, has
created several night lingerie lines in linen
and pure silk satin. Punto Blanco is also following the “green” lingerie trend with organic cotton products.
My impression is that that the brands are turning towards “green” not necessarily for a
marketing buzz but more by pure conviction. Moreover, the drop in the prices of organic products is leading to a certain
democratisation of the green offer on the
lingerie market, to the great pleasure of
consumers who increasingly appreciate
intimate articles in organic fabrics.

On

Créations Lingerie: Which
trends will influence the
lingerie of tomorrow, as regards style, shapes and colours?
Pascale Briand: Today femininity
is associated with power, women feel
strong if they are feminine. Lingerie
must therefore adapt to this new perception of femininity. Two
major trends will therefore develop in lingerie: very feminine corsetry and lingerie with a “smoothing” effect.
We believe that the glamour lingerie of the 1950s
will make a come back with a new perspective on self-confidence.
Seductive corsetry is now linked to the
concepts of power and strength. There
is a return to bombshell shapes that
push the bust forward and underline a
conquering silhouette. After 15 years of
moulded cups that erase shapes, today
the trend is towards a reaffirmation of
curves with a lot of cut outs. Invisibility is
no longer the dominant value for tomorrow, the silhouette asserts and shows itself. In addition, fuller figures have come out
of hiding and want to show their curves with
more decorum and imagination. Alongside this
corsetry, lingerie that smoothes and shapes is de-

veloping. The fabrics are constantly changing and allow underwear
to “smooth” shapes, with light, supporting fabrics. We are returning
to clinging, knitted dresses and the slightest defect must be hidden!
High-waisted, covering panties therefore replace strings and shorties. On the other hand, the product must be ever more appealing.
For this, there is a play on effects of netting, lace incrustations, topstitching, transparencies and satin effects. Thanks to technological innovations, we have real hi-tech products, for instance a seamless
girdle, reinforced areas, transparencies and “gentler support”. Beautiful cut-outs are the future of lingerie.
As regards colours, we are seeking an alternative to the black-red
duo and focusing more on shaded tones of violets, greens and blues,
introducing prune, peacock blue, midnight blue and emerald green
colours in the winter 2011/2012 collections. As regards floral motifs,
we wished to break with bouquets of pink flowers and chose yellow
shades and vanilla tones. In short, the years of moulding and total
invisibility are behind us. We are seeking cut-outs, intricate work and
ergonomic fits in an article that continues to be very appealing.
Florence Peyrichou: A real sculpting trend and a natural side is developing so that body shape can be sculpted without constraint and
pushing the limits of the body. We can now gently shape the body to
erase imperfections and magnify the silhouette. Eventhough women
are rounder than before, they have ever greater self-confidence and
are no longer ashamed to wear a garment to flatten their stomach.
Alongside these correcting products we will see, over the next years,
seduction lingerie with masses of details and tulle. Women are seeking added value for their underwear, that is to say lingerie with

On arrive désormais à galber
Dorénavant, on
femme aujourd’hui ?
qu’asiatique.
finishings and details, and this applies
both to upmarket and low-priced articles. We
now no longer use very thick laces but light
fabrics that produce an airy effect whilst still
covering. Tomorrow’s lingerie will mark the difference by being finely worked with volumes, pointed shapes and new fabrics. As for colours, we will
see lots of “skin” tones, bright colours and prints
with tiny little flowers. Finally, lingerie will reinterpret the 1950s style with updated archive products
with high waists and pointed bras, but worked with
more finishings. There will, nonetheless, be a time lag
between the arrival of these products on the market
and women’s desire to buy them, since any new
style implies a change in mentalities. The
change must therefore be activated by small
touches.

Créations Lingerie: In a difficult economic climate,
what are the main motivations behind the purchase of
lingerie for the woman of today? Has, in particular, the
“made in” label an impact on purchases?
Florence Peyrichou: We are seeing a real evolution in the
act of purchasing: lingerie, whose primary role is functional,
must increasingly play an emotional role today.
At present lingerie can be found at all prices and women can
treat themselves without paying a fortune. So much the better,

since women want their underwear to cost less
than their outerwear. Indeed, this is the reason
why women play with sets and mix expensive bras
with cheap panties. Consumers are also increasingly paying attention to the “made in” label, comparing prices according to the products’ origin. Women
look at the labels and have the impression of being
“had” if they pay 91 Euros for a product made in China.
Consumers need to see the value of their purchases and
prefer to choose a European rather than an Asian product.

first stimulus for a lingerie purchase. Corsetry is the symbol of this,
with its laces, play on transparency and flattering colours. Women
also wish, through their lingerie, to respond to their desire for social
success, to feel like a “business woman”. Lingerie that flatters them
is lingerie that gives power and influences their state of mind. Indeed, lingerie has a real psychological impact on women and can
even affect their morale during the day. We buy beautiful lingerie to

self-assertion. Lingerie is considered to have a value in itself and not
to be trivial at all. As for the “made in” label, it is more than ever topical and certainly represents a major challenge for European corsetry. French women like upmarket articles and are fanatic about
corsetry. This is why the brands produced in France, Italy or Eastern
Europe mark the difference by their labels. Lingerie is less the stuff
of dreams when it is produced in Asia and this has an impact on the
purchase. I
