1. MASCULINE or FEMININE? Unlike English, French nouns are either MASCULINE or FEMININE This is known as the GENDER
2. Getting the gender right is important in order to avoid confusion and to speak the language correctly. The = la (Definite articles) – goes before feminine nouns A/an = une Indefinite articles) – goes before feminine nouns The = le ( Definite articles) – goes before masculine nouns A/an = un (indefinite articles) – goes before masculine nouns BUT: l’ (Definite articles) (‘the’ before a vowel or silent h) & les (Definite articles) (‘the’ before plurals) go with either gender!
