This is a presentation I gave at the First Tuesday event in London on Nov 6th, discussing startup trends for 2013. It sums up a few interesting collaborative consumption startups, several of them based in the UK.
The potential for collaborative consumptionOuiShare
Presented at the European Economic and Social Committee event in Madrid on June 25th 2014. What's the potential for collaborative consumption? what are the key factors to scale its impact?
Sharing is becoming a major trend, with billions participating in sharing aspects of their lives through social networks, peer-to-peer lending and borrowing, and shared access to property, knowledge, and time. However, significant challenges around trust and regulation remain if sharing is to reach its full potential to democratize access and reduce costs by sharing underutilized assets through new peer-to-peer networks and business models.

The document proposes gamifying collaborative consumption by increasing target behaviors like sharing products/services and using shares. It outlines player demographics and devises activity loops including feedback mechanisms and progression loops tied to gamified status levels. Mechanics like challenges, chance, cooperation and rewards are mapped to components like achievements and leaderboards. The goal is engaging players in a fun personal radar chart system tracking collaborative consumption mastery over time.

Collaborative consumption involves peer-to-peer sharing and exchange through online platforms and communities. It allows for shared access to goods and services rather than individual ownership. Examples include car sharing services, clothing swaps, and social lending. Collaborative consumption reduces waste and environmental impact while building community. As access over ownership grows, designers and brands must focus on collaborative solutions and experiences to meet changing consumer values and needs.

Sharing Economy presentation to Copenhagen City CouncilBrooks Rainwater
The sharing economy is a game changer and is rapidly emerging in cities across America and around the world. It speaks specifically to what we are learning in cities around this subject at the National League of Cities.

This document discusses a study measuring the consumer potential of collaborative consumption in Amsterdam. It defines collaborative consumption, identifies stakeholders, and outlines research questions about factors influencing citizens' willingness to participate. A survey of 1,330 Amsterdam residents found substantial willingness to engage in various collaborative consumption activities. Key factors influencing willingness included financial savings, social benefits, environmental attitudes, and personal recommendations. The study concludes collaborative consumption is gaining momentum as a new socioeconomic model and makes recommendations for platforms to promote inclusive growth.
The document discusses the rise of the sharing economy, which is enabled by advances in technology and social media that allow for peer-to-peer sharing, bartering, and renting of goods and services. Some key points made include that the sharing economy was estimated to be a $35 billion business in 2013 and projected to grow to $335 billion by 2025. It also discusses how large businesses can learn from the sharing economy model by focusing on collaborative communities, social exchange, trust, platforms over products, and involving clients in the product creation process.
