2. G
Tristan.
– Mais bien sûr, répondit Grand-père. Et il se mit à
lui lire cette histoire…
—k—
G
randpa, do you have any Christmas stories
about the insect friends? Tristan asked.
– I believe I do, answered Grandpa Jake,
and he began to read this Christmas story
to Tristan...

—k—
It was a sunny winter day. Snow covered the ground. The
insect friends hurried to a meeting, making little footprints in the
snow.

—k—
– Christmas is a time of
giving. Let’s do something
nice for our neighbors this Christmas,
Wallace said.
– What fun! Drudy
exclaimed.
– So what shall we do?
asked Jibber.
84
plaisir.
discussion s’engagea.
—k—
The insects were quiet.
– Let’s ask God for a good plan, Lincoln said finally. Christmas
is Jesus’ birthday. I wonder what Jesus would like for His
birthday?
So the insects prayed for some ideas. Then, they started
planning.
85
6. – On pourrait
préparer des corbeilles
de Noël, suggéra Guillerelle.
– Et si on chantait une
chanson de Noël ! proposa
Isabelle, qui aussitôt entonna :
—k—
– We could make Christmas
baskets suggested Wallace.
– What if we sang Christmas carols?
asked Lincoln, who promptly started
singing in a shaky

7. « Douce nuit, sainte nuit »
de sa voix chevrotante. Non,
je ne sais pas chanter ! fit-elle.
J’ai une voix épouvantable.
– Allons, ne te décourage pas !
insista Zoé. Zac, viens te joindre à
nous !
—k—

can’t sing! My voice isn’t good.
– Don’t give up! Jibber
said. Specks, come join
us.

—k—
The three insects began the song again together. Soon they
sang beautifully:
« Douce nuit, Sainte nuit !
Tout est calme et sans bruit.
Dans une pauvre étable,
Dort l’enfant adorable,
D’un céleste repos ! »
Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright,
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant, so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
– Splendide ! s’écria Julie, en applaudissant.
—k—
88
– Wonderful! Drudy exclaimed, while clapping.

– Douze.
—k—
– Those Christmas baskets are beautiful! Specks said
as she admired the decorated baskets with presents and
delicious snacks.
– I made a list of all the insect families that we could give
the baskets to, Wallace said.
– How many are there? Drudy asked.
– Twelve.
89
10. – Eh bien alors, on a
fini ! annonça Zoé, qui
venait de compter les
paniers.
– Ce soir, c’est la veille
de Noël, et nous allons les
distribuer, lança Isabelle.
Je suis impatiente de
commencer. Et pourquoi
pas tout de suite ?
– Bonne idée !
s’exclamèrent les petites
bêtes à l’unisson.
Celles-ci cheminaient
sous les flocons de neige,
tout en chantant :
—k—
– Then we’re done,
Jibber said, after counting
the baskets.
– It’s Christmas Eve, and
tonight we can distribute
them. I can’t wait to get
started! Lincoln said
eagerly. Shall we go now?
– Good idea, the insects
chorused!
Snowflakes fell from the
sky. As the insects walked,
they sang,
90
11. – Joie pour le
monde, le Sauveur est
venu…
Elles s’arrêtèrent
devant la maison de
l’oncle et de la tante
Scarabée.
– Joyeux Noël à
vous tous ! s’écria
Guillerelle.
– Bonsoir, répondit
oncle Scarabée. Joyeux
Noël à vous aussi.
– Quel bon vent
vous amène ? demanda
tante Scarabée.
—k—
– Joy to the world,
the Lord is come…
They arrived at
Uncle and Auntie
Beetle’s place.
– Merry Christmas,
Uncle and Auntie, said
Wallace.
– Good evening,
Wallace, Uncle replied.
Merry Christmas to all
of you!
– What brings you
here? asked Auntie.
91
– Douce nuit, sainte nuit, entonna Isabelle.
Puis tante
Scarabée embrassa chacune des petites bêtes.
– Mille merci ! s’écria-t-elle.
—k—
– We brought you a Christmas basket, and we’d like to sing
you a Christmas carol, Drudy explained.
– How kind of you! Auntie exclaimed.
– Silent night, holy night, Lincoln began singing.
The others joined in, even Uncle and Auntie and their
children. Afterwards, Auntie hugged each of the insects.
– Thank you so much! she said.
92
—k—
You have made this a wonderful Christmas.
Our insect friends continued to bring joy and happiness
to many families throughout the evening. Finally they said
goodnight to each other.
– That was the best Christmas ever, Bits said.
The others agreed.
93
14. L’histoire
terminée,
Tristan
demanda à
Grand-père :
– Qu’est-ce que je
pourrais faire pour les
autres à Noël ?
Grand-père répondit :
– Tu pourrais offrir
Tristan.
—k—
– What could I do for others at
Christmas? Tristan asked afterwards.
– You could do something for Derek
next door, or you could make a Christmas
card for your parents, Grandpa Jake
answered. You can ask God to give you
some good ideas.
– I will, Tristan said.

Et pour Tristan, ce fut
également le plus beau Noël,
parce qu’il offrit à Jésus le
cadeau qu’Il préfère par-dessus
tout : l’amour et la gentillesse qui
rendent les autres heureux.

It was the best
Christmas for Tristan,
because he was doing
what Jesus liked best for
His birthday: Tristan was
thinking about how to
make others happy.

16. Morale
Moral
The best Christmas present you can give to others
is love and kindness. When you make others happy,
you also make God happy.
