cide.
Un commentateur turc a déclaré
que M. Erdogan était un homme de
surprises, mais à l’examen de son
dossier, il faut admettre que les con-
doléances adressées aux Arméniens
étaient parfaitement en ligne avec ses
politiques précédentes.
Lorsque M. Erdogan est acculé au
mur, il agit de façon prévisible, comme
lorsqu’il s’est excusé auprès des
Kurdes de Dersim qui ont été mas-
sacrés après la révolte de 1937. En
présentant des excuses aux Kurdes, il
a essayé de tuer quelques oiseaux poli-
tiques en même temps : rassurer les
Kurdes sur son désir d’apporter une
solution négociée à leurs griefs, et en
même temps fournir une réprimande à
l’opposition du Parti Républicain qui
était au pouvoir lorsque les atrocités
ont été commises. En présentant des
excuses aux Arméniens, il tente de
résoudre certains problèmes politiques
brulants.
Commentant le 24 avril 2014, le
chroniqueur de « Zaman aujourd’hui »,
Bulent Kenes a écrit : « [En Turquie]
Cette déclaration définit assez bien
la valeur réelle des actions d’Erdogan.
Mais d’autres en tirent des conclu-
sions absolues. Une telle déclaration
est apparue dans un commentaire sur
Al-Jazira par Cengiz Aktan, chercheur
principal au Centre de politique
d’Istanbul et ex-directeur auprès des
Nations Unies. M. Aktan estime

région, a déclaré : « La déclaration
d’Erdogan est-elle un signe de change-
ment en Turquie ou une manœuvre
politique calculée ?
Les deux à la fois. »
La société turque vit dans un état
paradoxal : plus le parti islamiste
exerce sa répression, plus les libéraux
utilisent des expressions audacieuses
de liberté. Et malgré ses dénégations
catégoriques du génocide, M. Erdogan
a donné plus aux minorités que
n’importe lequel de ses prédéces-
seurs .
L’une des principales raisons con-
traignant M. Erdogan à faire le premier
pas sur cette question, ce sont les
changements quantitatifs de la société
civile turque le forçant à des change-
ments qualitatifs.

l’Eurovision. Sirusho avait également
terminée à la 4e place à l’Eurovision
2008. Mais à peine le concours termi-
né, des révélations entachent une nou-
velle fois l’Eurovision. On a souvent
parlé de l’Azerbaïdjan qui avait eu
recours à des tricheries massives et
achats de voix du jury par remporter
l’Eurovision 2011. L’occasion d’organi-
ser l’Eurovision 2012 à Bakou et don-
ner au dictateur Aliev l’occasion de
présenter une vitrine honorable de son
régime à l’Europe. Les dernières révé-
lations parvenues cette nuit juste
après le concours informent qu’en
Russie et en Belgique, au nombre de
SMS parvenus auprès des jurys respec-
tifs, l’Arménie était à la première
place. Mais les jurys en ont décidé
autrement.

orthodoxes finlandaises. Lors de la
réunion, Karékine II a également pré-
Zagorsk.
Bakou accuse James Warlick
d’appuyer les Arméniens
Le co-président du Groupe de Minsk,
l’américain James Warlick s’est rendu
auprès des communautés arméniennes de
Los Angeles et Houston pour rencontrer,
respectivement, les communautés armé-
niennes et azéries. L’Azerbaïdjan a accusé

GENOCIDE MONUMENT
UNVEILED IN VANCOUVER
The 99th Armenian Genocide Commemoration in Vancouver was held with
great success with over 300 people present. The unveiling of the 3rd Canadian
Genocide Monument was blessed by both Archbishops. Members of Parliament
and MLA’s were also present. The Armenian ambassador to Canada, Mr. Armen
Yeganian was also present for this special occasion. Well known Canadian
Armenian director, Mr. Atom Egoyan was a special guest. After the unveiling,
the procession entered the building and the ceremony continued indoors. Varto
Papasian (ADL Rep.) and Jack Der Hagopian (ARF) were Masters of Ceremony
in Armenian and English respectively. Varto Papasian opened the programme in
Armenian and had a few opening remarks:
“Today is a day of prayer
Today is a day of mourning
Today is a day of demanding justice on behalf of our innocent genocide
victims 99 years ago. The responsibility to achieve that justice is on every
single Armenian’s shoulder. And justice will prevail with our unified efforts.
Today we have our Armenia….
Today we have our Karabagh…
Tomorrow we will have our historical Armenia with Mount Ararat.”
Government officials read proclamations. Mr. Yeganian said a few words.
Mr. Atom Egoyan read the open letter that he wrote to the Turkish people which
was published in the “AGOS” newspaper. A cultural program followed with
music and songs.
Plaques were handed to Matilda, the artist who designed the monument,
Hasso Essmailian, responsible for the construction of the monument, and Mr.
Glen Hodges, the manager of the site. The program concluded with prayers
from both Archbishops.

TCA Arshag Dickranian Students Win in
Earth Day Poster Contest
Los Angeles - After participating, for the first time, in the Earth Day Poster
Contest titled “Green Cities”, TCA Arshag Dickranian School 5th grade student
Julianna Mkrtchyan and 9th grade student Ani Sarafian were announced as First
Place Winners of the Elementary and High School Categories respectively. The
winners of the contest were declared by Assembly Member Mr. Richard Bloom
of California’s 50th Assembly District on Thursday, April 24.
The Earth Day Poster Contest took place in observance of Earth Day 2014 to
encourage children of different ages to take care of planet earth and its environ-
ment. Over 100 entries were submitted. To enter the contest, students were
asked to submit an 8 1/2” by 11” poster comprised of recycled paper, using vari-
ous forms of media to illustrate an idea that reflects awareness of the impor-
tance of taking care of planet earth and its environment.
ADS fifth grade student Julianna Mkrtchyan’s poster illustrated planet earth’s
beauty with the ocean, land and city life in harmony, whereas ninth grade stu-
dent Ani Sarafian’s poster depicted a multi-colored flower with a city painted in
green at the flower’s carpel, reflecting the importance of “Going Green”.
The School will soon receive an official congratulatory letter and the winners’
certificates, which will be granted to our winner students. The TCA ADS admin-
istration and staff, students, parents and teachers are very proud of Julianna
Mkrtchyan and Ani Sarafian and congratulate them for their achievement,
encouraging them to pursue their artistic talent further and wishing them recog-
nition even in the future.

programs to help local governments,
farms, schools, and orphanages. He
pointed out how Armenians in
Armenia are entrepreneurial, industri-
ous, and hard-working, but that there
was still a need to encourage them to
become more self-reliant.
During the question and answer
session, Ambassador Heffern
addressed the Karabakh conflict, dis-
cussing the hardened positions of the
Armenian and Azeri sides involved in a
zero-sum game, and the difficult con-
versations which the American,
French, and Russian O.S.C.E. Minsk
Group co-mediators are conducting.
Regarding the pressing issue of emi-
gration, the Ambassador pointed out
the lack of jobs, the big divide
between the wealthy and the poor, and
unfairness in the economy and soci-
ety, leading to frustration and the
desire to leave. To stem the tide, he
suggested establishing more political
space and less dominance of the eco-
nomic system by the oligarchs. He
mentioned that repatriation should be
seriously considered in order to bring
back skills and values to the home-
land. He emphasized the importance
of opening the border between
Armenia and Turkey. Ambassador
Heffern has urged President Sarkisian
to reform Armenia and turn it into a
Luxembourg or Switzerland of the
Caucasus.
On the Genocide issue, the
Ambassador stated that the Obama
Administration knows and is listening
to the voices emanating from
Armenians regarding the 100th
anniversary of the Genocide, adding
that there are many other political fac-
tors involved, and that President
Obama has made his position clear on
this issue. Thus the priority has been
placed on reconciliation. He reminded
the students that Armenia is a friend
of the United States and conducts mili-
tary exercises and training with
NATO, but that Armenia remains an
ally of Russia.
He also shared some personal infor-
mation - that his mother was from
India, that his family had lived in India
and China, that he had learned
Chinese, and that he had served in the
U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Japan. High
School Principal Torossian presented
the Ambassador, who is a Spartan bas-
ketball and football fan, with a
Manoogian School sweatshirt. He also
gave the Ambassador a copy of A
Legacy of Armenian Treasures from
the Alex and Marie Manoogian
Museum in Southfield, MI.
That got me thinking
A guide for all those who are way too pretentious
I seriously have trouble understanding how some people have the power
to be so incredibly pretentious all the time. And by pretentious, I don't
mean those who raise their hands in class and seem to know more than the
teacher. There are a hell of a lot of people out there who know a hell of a
lot. And I think that that is amazing. Knowledge is power, they say. What
I hate, though, is when people think that since they are somehow know-
ledgeable, that they have the right to look down on you because they con-
sider you inferior.
Thinking that you are above somebody because of the things you know
and your taste in different things is ridiculous. It shows nothing more than
great flaw of character. If you need to make yourself feel better by thin-
king, "well at least I'm better than everyone else", then you've got it all
wrong. You don't pursue knowledge or enjoy things that are considered
higher quality to be able to look down upon others. You do it for yourself,
because you like it.
You can be the biggest fan of Nirvana and decide that pop music is the
worst thing that has ever happened to humanity. Fine. But what if you met
someone who said that classical music is real music and that you're just lis-
tening to noise? What if you met someone who told you "Wow, you haven't
read all of Plato's works in Ancient Greek?" What would you think? That's
right. You'd think "go away, who do you think you are?". There's always
going to be something out there that is considered "higher quality". No one
has got real authority on the matter.
It's important to strive for more, to expect more from yourself. The more
you learn, the better. The world has so much to offer and it is an incredible
thing to aspire to be the best person you can be, to be an intelligent, well-
rounded person. Those who always want more, who always strive to
achieve great things are important. But in the end, what really differentiates
you from the crowd is not how many classics you've read. It's what you
decide to do with the knowledge that you have gained. And that, my friend,
is true intelligence.

THE YOUTH CORNERENGER ARTO DEYRMENJIAN
1941-2014
It’s hard and emotionally unbearable to lose a lifelong friend and com-
rade like Arto.
For decades, Arto was the leader of the Armenian Community in
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In addition, he was the leader and
one of the founders of ADL Sardarabad Chapter.
He was respected by all regardless of their political beliefs and was head-
strong about community decisions which didn’t support Armenia or
Armenians. We used to spend endless hours discussing Armenian issues
and how we could tackle them. He preferred to be behind the scenes and
made sure protocol was followed. He participated actively and made huge
financial contributions for the right Armenian causes. Who will be my guid-
ing light now? Like an Armenian Community Centre, his house was open to
all Armenian youth. He readily gave advice about being an active Armenian
in our community. Arto was a person you could trust in time of need. Arto
used to say that a person would be remembered by his deeds and the me-
mories he created.
As a great pillar of our community, Arto succeeded in planting the
Armenian seed in our youth and the fruit of his fruition is evident.
Till we meet again!

BAKU — Azerbaijan’s Deputy
Foreign Minister Araz Azimov, in
remarks reported by the Azeri press
has accused Warlick of one-sidedness,
citing unnamed sources in Washington
allegedly claiming that US diplomat
“has close ties with the Armenian
Diaspora in the US”. In a Twitter post
last week, Warlick stated that he was
looking forward to meeting with and
discussing the Nagorno-Karabakh con-
flict with both Armenian and Azeri
communities in the US .
“In general, some of his statements
are provocative, with the co-chair
spreading rumors about a possible
escalation of the conflict between
Armenia and Azerbaijan,” claimed
Azimov. “We cannot turn a blind eye
to Warlick’s actions, which reduce
confidence in the Minsk Group, run
contrary to the mandate of the Co-
Chairs and undermine the negotiation
process. Warlick is consciously and
deliberately taking these steps to
ensure the interests of the Armenian
side,” asserted Azimov. “The
Azerbaijani side has every reason to
distrust the US Co-Chair, refuse work-
ing with him and appeal to the OSCE
Chairman-in-Office to recall Warlick
from the post of the OSCE Minsk
Group Co-Chair,” Azimov concluded.
Baku attacks Warlick for
Pro-Armenian bias
New Movie Project on Karabakh to be
Introduced at Cannes Film Market
Filmmaker Jivan Avedisian is getting ready to introduce his new film project
titled “The Last Resident” at the 67th Cannes Film Market. The events of the
movie dedicated to the history of Nagorno Karabakh take place in 1988-89.
In a conversation with “Armenpress” filmmaker Jivan Avedisian stated: “The
National Cinema Centre of Armenia gave me an opportunity to introduce my
new story at the Armenian pavilion of the Cannes Film Market. Also, the Russian
side as well allowed us to introduce the project in their pavilion for several min-
utes. Each year they choose several projects, the authors of which are allowed
to introduce them in their pavilion for several minutes. ‘The Last Resident’ is
among those projects this year.”
